The sun is setting when Five hears her breach onto the shore. Her red-lipped smile is predatory, the arching spines above her tail rattle as they settle, striped red like the venomous coral reef fish.
“Five,” she purrs, “have you reconsidered my offer?”
Five grits his teeth, shaking his head. Every sundown she comes to ask, to remind him that she ‘rescued’ him. That she saved him, when she dragged him from the shipwreck and stranded him on this barren isle.
“It’s still a no.”
That he owes her his life.
“Pity. Well, I’ll be back tomorrow. Maybe then, hmm?”
