Work Text:

Sand sifted quietly under foot as Blaster walked down the shoreline of the lake, making his way toward a dimly lit marina, where he could make out the silhouette of someone sitting on one of the docks facing the water. His spark pulsed in his chest, excitement bubbling as if he was sneaking out of the Autobot base for the first time again. He reached the gravel that surrounded the docks and Soundwave turned, nodding to acknowledge his presence.

“Didn’t keep you waitin’ long, did I?”, he said with a little grin, the wood of the dock creaking as he sat down, only a foot between him and the already seated Decepticon. Despite their size, the pair were able to let their legs hang over the edge, dark water swirling around the pylons a few inches below.

“Negative,” Soundwave replied in typical fashion, “you’ve arrived five minutes earlier than our agreed upon meeting time, as you have been every single time.” Blaster could feel a smirk on Soundwave’s voice, and his face ran hot at the jab. Was he that obvious?

“Hey, I’m not the guy who was already sitting and waiting for my arrival. What’s that say about you being here...ten minutes early?” Blaster laughed.

“Assessing security of the meeting point,” Soundwave responded matter-of-factly, “I won’t be gotten that easily, Autobot.”

“Sure, sure, “ Blaster teased back, “I won’t tell anyone if it was because you wanted to see me for just a bit longer, though.”

Blaster could feel the equivalent of an eyeroll radiate from Soundwave, and started into a recap of his activities in their time apart, lest his counterpart dig a bit deeper into his teasing of his very obvious crush. He played a recording of a new human song he and Jazz had found skipping through radio frequencies, detailing their plan to somehow sneak an entire car into a concert in a couple weeks.

They both talked about their cassettes, equally as curious to hear how they managed their respective teams. It was comforting to know that the relationships they held were incredibly similar; a more familial bond than merely a commander and his squad. Soundwave recounted Rumble and Frenzy’s antagonization of Skywarp and Blaster made a mental note that he’d definitely need to make sure Rewind didn’t get himself in trouble with them if they met. The topic flowed into talking about their other comrades, comparing the personalities of bots who held similar positions in their respective base. A few comments about the war stilted the back and forth; both mechs trying to avoid accidentally divulging any intel that could be turned into blackmail.

Taking advantage of the brief lull in conversation, Blaster closed the distance between where the two were sitting, gently taking Soundwave’s hand into his own. Indigo digits intertwined with his gray before settling onto his lap. Closeness like this wasn’t new to either of them at this point, each mech lowering his guard little by little each time they snuck out to see each other. Shoulders brushing and hands being held as they talked became commonplace. The first time Blaster took Soundwave’s hand he was sure something inside of him would short out. But Soundwave, evaporating any of Blaster’s apprehension, had immediately reciprocated, his own fingers fitting neatly against Blaster’s.

Presently, he moved his gaze from their hands to Soundwave’s face, whose visor met his own optics with a subtle intensity that made Blaster glance back down, then up again, incredibly aware of the nervous look plastered on his own face.

“Uh-” , he began, exhaling a shaky laugh, “I dunno if this is the direction you were also heading but, could I-” he paused as he turned his torso to face Soundwave, raising his other hand to hover near the side of his helmet.

“Proceed.” Soundwave replied, before Blaster gingerly cupped the side of his face and pulled him into a kiss.

Energy surged down Blaster’s body, racing through his arms and down his neck straight into his spark. He felt Soundwave tense briefly before leaning closer towards him, deepening the kiss despite his faceplate. Warmth emanated from the smooth metal, weak charge transferring to his lips. He gripped Soundwave’s hand as he lowered the other from his face, carefully reaching to hold Soundwave’s waist and pull him closer. They were still sitting, upper bodies twisted towards each other, Soundwave’s free hand finding its way to rest on Blaster’s shoulder.

Any latent concern due to Soundwave’s lack of a conventional mouth was ejected from Blaster’s processor as his sole focus became peppering his entire face with the adoration he’d kept pent up for so long. Unable to ‘kiss’ back, Soundwave still responded as much as he could, pressing his faceplate against the Autobot and pulling him closer each time he pulled away. Untangling their fingers, he pulled Blaster into a full embrace, moving his other hand to caress the warm red metal on the side of his face. Blaster broke the kiss, but only for a moment before trailing down to Soundwave’s neck, touching his lips to the cables, pausing to gauge his reaction before continuing, lavishing attention as energon surged right beneath the surface. He could feel Soundwave’s grip tense on his shoulder, tiny vibrations tingling against his lips from stifled vocalizations trapped in his throat.

Blaster made his way back up to Soundwave’s face, flushed and betraying his usual demeanor. “Really wish I had a camera on me, you are a sight,” he said before kissing the left side of Soundwave’s faceplate, “but I think my memory’s good enough.”

“Blaster-”, Soundwave started, before immediately getting cut off by two internal alarms going off simultaneously.

“Oh for the love of… already?” Blaster lifted his head and turned his alarm off, cursing the short duration of Earth’s night. As unsubstantial as they were, it was enough time to properly recharge and the other Autobots and Decepticons would be rising soon, expecting Blaster and Soundwave to be among them.

“Same time next week?” he asked as he let go of Soundwave’s hand and prepared to get up, already knowing the answer without needing to hear it. Soundwave nodded and, despite the mutual disappointment that tonight’s encounter had been cut short, Blaster let himself start looking forward to their next meeting.

Lifting himself to his feet, Blaster extended his hand to help his companion up as well. Now standing face to face in the misty early dawn, Blaster planted a final kiss on Soundwave’s forehead, and they both departed from the marina together.
