Chapter Text
It was the Professor who had helped her, really.
And yes, to Susan, he was still The Professor, or, on a rare occasion, Professor Kirke. To Peter, Ed, and Lu, he had become Diggory, same as Miss Plummer had become Polly. They had felt a kinship, what with their visits to Narnia. A kinship of which Susan was left out.
But still, Susan was, and always would be, in the debt of the Professor. He was the reason she had had a job at Bletchley Park (or BP, as its constituents referred to it); he was the reason she was at this job, however boring it was, with the NCA.
Apparently, her request for a job change (any position, anything, anything but being a glorified secretary for a moment more) had been approved. Susan wasn’t an idiot, no matter what her male colleagues might say; her superiors hadn’t had a change of heart, hadn’t realized that her record had already proved that I can do more than just type up transcripts all the bloody live-long day. No, they had just gotten tired of the incessant written and verbal requests. Honestly, Susan had submitted so many of them, she could fill out a request-for-transfer form in her sleep.
Susan held no delusions about what the transfer from the NCA to its American counterpart, the FBI, would mean for her; she’d essentially still be in the same position. Hopefully, though, the whole ‘British liaison’ would afford her more respect and a couple of duties more suited to her skill set. At any rate, she could do with a change of pace. England had been choking her for a while, and then the addition of her family’s deaths had made her want to leave and never come back, never see what could well be her ‘homeland’ again. (It wasn’t her homeland, Narnia was. Despite what her siblings may think, what their perspective may be, she never forgot. She just moved on, treasuring the memories but not trying to time travel back to them.)
Susan didn’t try and hide her surprise when she—literally—ran into a woman with the same British accent in the hallway, just offered her a hand up and a tube of lipstick to touch up. As they walked away from each other, going back to their respective lives, Susan couldn’t help the feeling that something in her life was about to change drastically. More drastically than moving to America, more drastically than her family’s deaths, more drastically than the transfer from the NCA to the FBI. Narnia-level drastic change.
Be it a change for better or for worse.
