These Chromium Blues

Summary:

"You could kick Imperial backside much harder with a cyborg leg."

Notes:

That awkward moment when you forget to fill in the recipient's name for the treat until almost a week later.

Work Text:

Cassian knew he was alive when K-2SO said, "Fortunately, we have replacement parts in stock." He cracked open one eye to a piercing light and closed it again. "Ah, you're awake." A metal hand rested against his forehead. "Cassian would like the chrome model."

That woke him further. Blearily, he asked, "Chrome model of what?"

"Your new leg. Your previous model was vaporized on Scarif. Don't you remember?"

Cassian blinked his way fully awake. Scarif. The mission. He'd accepted they were all going to perish, that Kay had already perished under the blaster fire from the guards. Jyn had taken the plans, and Cassian had fallen, and he had only snapshot images in his memories after that. "We're alive?"

"Obviously."

His body was numb, no doubt from whatever medicine was coursing through him now. His vision saw the familiar setup of an Alliance medbay. Just past where things got blurry, he saw bacta tanks. He knew two of the faces floating there, but his mind was hazy and their names escaped him. Escape. "Did we all escape?"

"Define 'all,'" said Kay. Hands worked over him now, measuring and sensing. "Jyn is recovering in another room. Bodhi will be out of his tank in a week. Those priests are busy annoying people elsewhere on the base."

And you're here with me, Cassian thought muzzily and smiled. There were names Kay hadn't said, and Cassian would ask later. He covered the hand on his forehead with his own hand. Conversation circled back. "I lost a leg?"

"Think of it as gaining a cybernetic upgrade."

A doctor he couldn't see said, "We'll need to prep him for the surgery now."

"Not the chrome," said Cassian. "I want synthflesh."

"He's delirious," Kay said. "He wants the chrome so we can have matching legs."

"Kay," Cassian said, warningly.

"Fine. Synthflesh. But you could kick Imperial backside much harder with a cyborg leg."

"Thanks but no. We'll have to match some other way."

"I suppose. Rings and necklaces are traditional on many planets. Obviously I cannot get a tattoo." The hand on his head squeezed. Cassian had seen him break bone before by a mere squeeze of his hand. This touch was far more tender. New leg. New life. Same old Kay by his side.

"We'll think of something," he said, as the doctor applied the anaesthesia.

"I'll be here when you wake," said Kay. In a loud whisper he said to the doctor, "Really, he wants the chrome."

Cassian snorted and fell asleep.
