“One more picture.” Lena requested, fiddling with the looped rope around her daughter’s neck. Attached to the rope was a chalkboard carefully filled in with the following: “Sky Danvers — Age: 2 ½ —First Day Out On Parole.”
It also included a list of Sky’s favourite things, such as potstickers (what a no brainer, she was definitely Kara’s daughter….) and playing science (“doin’ ‘speriments”) with her Mommies. Lena reasoned that Sky had gotten her love of learning somewhere along the lines, too. Her heart warmed at the idea.
Now that she was going off to preschool, Lena had to admit she was nervous. She hadn’t been away from Sky this long since they’d adopted her. Kara had been a constant source of strength though, and kept reassuring Lena it’d be okay. That Sky would be okay without them for a few hours.
Speaking of Kara, the love of Lena’s life walked up to the toddler who was growing restless with the rope and chalkboard. She lifted it up over their daughter’s body, much to Lena’s discontent. “Kara! I was taking pictures!”
“Sweetheart,” Kara reasoned gently as she swiftly kissed her girlfriend on the cheek. “Do you want our little love to be late for preschool? Ah.” She raised her hand up. “Silly question, forget I asked. I know the truth.” she smirked.
Lena scowled. “I just don’t want to miss anything. What if she needs us?” Lena fretted, taking Sky into her arms. Straight red hair had been slightly frizzed by the air’s humidity against her baby’s head, and she set to work trying to flatten it for her. Sky would want to look her best, Lena figured. The look on Kara’s face said she was overreacting, but well, so be it.
“You’re not going to miss a single thing, she’ll just have to tell us stories instead of having pictures documenting every single second she breathes.” Kara said patiently. Smiling that evil smile of hers. “Come on, Lee. Trust the DEO’s preschool.”
Of course, since Sky was a Luthor and a Super’s daughter, there was no way they were letting her in a normal preschool. Lena had funded making the DEO have one. So what if it was a flashy show of her money? She deserved the best, Sky did.
“Fine, fine. But you’re making this up to me.” Lena sighed again as she deposited the two and a half year old toddler into her car seat, buckling her up and tickling her feet. “I’m going to miss you so much, babygirl. Mommy just loves you so much.” Lena whispered into her foot, playfully blowing a raspberry. Sky cooed.
“Don’t worry. I can do that.” Kara promised confidently, walking up to the car and buckling herself up. Lena got in beside her in the front seat, and then off to the DEO they went. “You’re gonna forget we even have a daughter by the time I’m through with you, babe.” Kara said playfully. Lena gave her a look, suspicious and intrigued all at once.
“You’ll see.” Kara said mysteriously. Lena didn’t press, instead focusing on her phone for the time being as she had a missed call from Jess, as well as a few texts.
Lena looked up sharply, frowning over at Kara. “Why is Jess asking me why I won’t be in the office today? I thought we were going to work after this.” she queried.
“We are, eventually, going back to work. But today is not that day.” Kara explained, turning a curve into the DEO’s parking lot.
“Not that I don’t want to spend time with you, darling, but what’s the point of giving Sky to the preschool then?” Lena was puzzled.
“Guess you’ll have to see. I mean, come on Lee, when was the last time we had the day to ourselves? As a couple, not just Sky’s moms.” Kara caved. “I want to do something special for you, I have it all planned. We’ll take a couple hours at least, but we can stop after a while if you’re really desperate. But first, you’re getting to relax some.” She said, mock threateningly.
“If you insist, beautiful.” Lena nodded reluctantly, though she couldn’t deny that she was looking forward to spending time with Kara by herself. She had missed the nights they used to spend, long hours with no clothes on, just touching and teasing and assuring one another of their devoted affections.
“Kelly will be taking care of the preschool today,” Alex announced as the young family made its way into the DEO. Alex made a show of grabby hands for their daughter, who Lena admittedly reluctantly, gave up to her. “Well hello there, beautiful girl!” Alex cooed. “Your aunt Alex missed you so much. Yes I did!” She grinned as Sky smacked her on the nose. “Boop! To you too.”
“You’re getting this on video, right?” Kara asked Winn, who shook his head regretfully. “She’d kill me.” Winn shrugged. Alex and Lena nodded in agreement to his words. Kara could concede to them as well.
“I have a reputation to uphold, miss ma’am.” Alex said in the same singsong voice, looking down at the toddler. “C’mon, let’s say bye-bye to your mommas. We’ll see you later, mommy, mama.” She used Sky’s hand to wave.
“Bye babygirl. We love you.” Kara kissed her daughter’s red hair, smiling against the baby’s scent — nothing like that smell.
“I love my baby, oh yes.” Lena nodded as she gave Sky a big hug. “Oof, so tight.” She teased, making Sky giggle. “I love you, Sky. Mommy will be back when mama lets her.” she promised, peppering Sky’s face in kisses before watching Alex exit with her.
She turned to Kara. “So what now?” she arched an eyebrow.
“Now we go to breakfast. I have it all planned out.” Kara reminded her. “We’re going to Little Red’s!” She beamed, waiting a beat before letting Lena in on the secret. “You know, where we ate for the first time together! After we got together, that is.” she reminded her.
“I remember, yes. Any special reason?” Lena leaned into Kara as they walked out of the DEO.
“Hopefully.” Kara nodded, unable to keep a good poker face when it came to Lena. Luckily, the CEO didn’t pressure her into spilling all the secrets at once. Thank Rao, because Kara would have. All too easily…
Once they arrived at Little Red’s, Kara spoke with the server for several moments before they were ushered into a booth in the back (the very booth they’d sat at on the first date, but that’s irrelevant…. not.) and soon enough Lena and Kara were both sipping on their drinks, laughing together.
Kara had missed seeing Lena like this, so free and in love. Not to say they weren’t still in love; but it’s exceptionally hard to look and laugh and just BE with each other when one was raising a child.
Before they were even given menus though, a chef came out with a meal. Kara smiled, and thanked the chef whilst Lena looked on curiously. The stack of pancakes had a tall stick in the middle of it; with something written on a post-it note that Lena saw the back of.
“What’s it say, baby?” Lena asked cautiously. “And how’d he know how many pancakes you’d want?” she teased.
“These are for you. It’s uh, it’s all for you. There was gonna be this really long note attached, but well, post its is easier to attach in a pancake, it turns out.” Kara explained, fidgeting nervously with her hands.
“Alright, I’ll play.” Lena gave Kara a smile. “What’d you want to write in the note?”
As Kara opened her mouth, nothing came out. Instead, she slowly turned the plate around to let Lena see “MARRY ME?” written in her love’s curly handwriting. When Lena looked back at Kara, she was nowhere to be found — until she turned sideways and saw her girlfriend on one knee in front of her.
“Lena Kieran Luthor.” Kara started, muffling Lena’s mouth with her hand. “Let me get this out, okay? I had it all ready. Don’t need your pretty face distracting me.”
Lena licked Kara’s hand, but nodded, tears forming in her eyes as Kara began. “I love you. I love you too much, sometimes, I fear that I’m gonna lose you. Actually, I fear that often. A lot. It’s my greatest fear, because if I lost you, well, I’d lose myself.” She whispered. “I don’t want to ever lose myself the way I did when we weren’t talking. I just wanna lose myself in your eyes.” she slanted a cheesy smile Lena’s way.
“I love raising our daughter with you, and if this isn’t what you’re ready for, then it’s okay. I can wait. But I’m sure that this, that you, are what I want. You, with your hair a mess and your lipstick stains all over my clothes. You, with your books dog-eared on the pages you love most. I just need you, Lena Luthor.” Kara finished quietly. Lena was crying now in earnest. “So I’m asking you — begging you really. I’m begging you, Lee. Marry me? Please.”
She waited a beat, and when Lena didn’t respond, Kara’s face fell. Had she gone too much, too soon? It was only when her hand was licked again that she realised she’d still been muffling her girlfriend’s mouth. She took her hand away, and, all of a sudden she was launched backward as Lena leaped into her arms and kissed her hungrily.
“Yes!” Lena mumbled against her fiance's mouth. “I want to marry you, and I don’t want to ever lose you either.” She whispered. “Marry me right now.” she laughed at Kara’s bewildered expression.
“I mean, okay, if you really don’t want a wedding—“
“I’m kidding, darling. As much as I would like to elope with you, I’d rather have our family there, too.” Lena grinned.
“But you’re definitely saying yes?” Kara checked, and laughed giddily when Lena nodded enthusiastically. They kissed again.
“I’m saying yes. All day. Every day. Forever.”
“Forever sounds about right.” Kara nodded, smiling against Lena’s lips.
“Love you.”
“I love you too.”
