Work Text:

Six months later, they were able to take little Sky home. A few months after that, Sky’s last name was officially Danvers, the adoption going through easily. Lena’s money had lent a hand in that, surely, but it was also clear that the apartment they lived in was filled with love in abundance for this child.

Sky Danvers would never know another home, though they would not keep her adoption from her.

Alex and Eliza had been the most surprised to have the child come into Lena and Kara’s hands. Maggie had sagely nodded, smiling. James begrudgingly accepted his role as Uncle James. (clearly he’d been thinking he would rather be a father— of Lena or Kara’s child, they weren’t sure.) Winn, naturally, was ecstatic about the whole thing.

It was nearing time for Sky to start crawling, if she would do so on an average basis. But Lena was beginning to have her doubts, privately. Sky could barely sit up on her own at the moment — nearly a year old. She still had to be held up by one of her parents, or whoever was holding her at the moment.

Kara did not seem to notice, or if she did, then she didn’t comment on it. Often though, the Kryptonian mother would comment on how beautiful their child was. And don’t get her started on the subject of ‘Lena’. She could talk for days!

If Kara was not snapping photographs off her cell phone of Sky, Lena, or the two together, then she was sketching the pictures absently. Often Lena would find the pictures around the house, littered with the lost words of Krypton that Lena wished she knew.

For Lena’s birthday a month ago, Kara had given her a beautiful watercolor photo of the three of them. It must have taken Kara months, but all she did was bashfully smile when Lena asked about it.

Lena was not used to this.

The feeling of being loved…. That was already strange enough, but being loved by Kara Danvers and their shared daughter was another matter altogether. Sure, Lena knew intellectually that Sky did not feel the same love that Lena felt for her, but she did make grabby hands for Lena so often that the Luthor’s heart constricted at the thought.

Lena was loved.

It was a heady feeling. Weirder still was the way that her “bonus mother” as Eliza called herself loved her. Not quite mother-in-law, but more than a stranger. So much more. Eliza was adoring towards Lena, and Lena knew she would do anything the older woman had asked of her without giving it even a second thought.

Lena was currently leaning against the couch, a child’s show playing on the television, Sky in her lap and a laptop on the cushion beside them. “Look Sky,” Lena encouraged her daughter (!!!!) to gaze up at the TV. “It’s— uh, what’s this show called again? Hm.” She flicked through the information on the television. “Ah yes! Peppa Pig! Do you like her accent? It’s kind of like mine.” Lena supposed.

Sky garbled a response, flopping backward on Lena’s belly, eliciting a laugh from her mother. Lena glanced at her laptop. She’d been behind for too long on meetings, but she hadn’t wanted to leave Sky alone or with nannies, nor could she ask for Kara to stop either of her jobs. Perhaps it was time to call in the big guns? She paused, rubbing her daughter’s back as she contemplated calling Sam Arias.

That, she decided, was a problem to deal with after talking to Kara about it. Everything would be okay. She just had to deal with things another few hours, until Kara got home — barring any Supergirl emergencies on the way.

When Peppa Pig was over, and two emails were sent off, Lena decided it was time for lunch for her daughter. “What shall we make you today, darling? Kale mash or sweet potato?” she hummed. Sky cooed in response to the sound.

Deciding to “treat” her with sweet potato mash instead, Lena placed the baby in her high chair and set to work making the meal for her — while also working towards a meal of her own. A simple kale salad would do for her.

Lena heard the door unlock as she finished up their meals. She smiled. “Kara! Darling, your Jeju is home.” She told Sky. “We’re in the kitchen, my love.” she called after Kara.

“Coming.” Kara answered, and Lena swore she could hear the smile in her voice. As the blonde came into view, Lena grinned. “Hey you.” She started, then saw flowers in Kara’s hands. “Aw, babe. You shouldn’t have.” She beamed anyway.

“These are for Sky. I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Kara teased, kissing her girlfriend on the mouth and handing her the bouquet.

“Sky, say thank you to Jeju for not only bringing you flowers, but also feeding you. What a great first date.” Lena retorted, laughing at the face Kara made.

“She’s going to get it all over my dress.” Kara whined

“She was going to get it all over mine, too! Just wear the bib thing,” Lena suggested. Kara pouted.

“‘Kay.” She said nonetheless. “It’s a good thing I kinda like you, Lena Luthor.” She stated as she went over to grab the cloth to put over her dress.

“Yeah? I like you too.” Lena promised, smiling.
