Work Text:
It was a testing day
Logan was sat in the front of the class reading a book, he'd already finished his test and was the first to hand in.
Patton clearly had some troubles and definitely wasn't the fastest to turn his in but finished around the time Roman did.
Virgil hadn't payed much attention during the year, so he didn't know anything to put but knew his grade depended on it as he looked around the classroom.
And that's when it hit him.
Like a tidal wave voices filled his head, the room, the world like a screaming child.
There were concerned voices, scared voices, angry voices, tired voices, depressed voices, happy voices, so many people were talking.
And yet at the same time.
Nobody was.
Virgil raised his hand hastily and handed in his unfinished test "Can I go to the bathroom?" He asked as he placed the packet on the stack.
The teacher shook her head "Once everybody finishes their test." She said
Virgil nodded and looked down, doing his best to hide the sheer panic and pain on his face.
The teacher walked away and Virgil curled up in his seat.
A single similar type of voice; laughter.
People were starting to make fun of him as he curled up in his seat and covered his ears.
Then another voice emerged, a quiet rival, people were worried about him.
But that didn't call him down it just meant more people were paying attention to him, more people knew something was wrong.
His head shot towards a student, she had gotten up with the quiet creak of the wooden seat.
They were told to raise their hands, not to get up, so you'd understand why so many people stared to her so suddenly.
She walked up to the teacher and whispered something.
The teacher looked at him.
His breathing began to come in sputters and silent gasps.
He put his head back on his knees and hid from the class, his eyes sealed.
Nausea clocked him in the stomach and he pulled further in on himself.
The voices rose louder and louder, the laughter and the worry rising above the few only focused on their tests.
Someone touched him.
He almost screamed, his head shooting up before he tried to scramble away finding the wall in his way he let out a quiet sob.
Wiping off his eyes he looked around the classroom to see all attention on him.
He was gonna be sick.
Virgil pushes the teacher of the way, grabbing his bag he pulling it onto his shoulder he put a hand over his mouth and ran out of the classroom.
The voices followed him in echos, some weren't just from his class, he ran to the bathroom and dropped his bag down on the floor throwing open a stall door he leaned over the toilet and retched.
The door opened and a hand touched his back. He flinched and sputtered, spitting and coughing. The hand removed itself and he reached for toilet paper to wipe his mouth with.
His hands shook and his eyes watered as he wiped his mouth and flushed the toilet.
That's when the ringing started.
He groaned and nearly fell backwards to crack skull open on the cold hard floors only to be caught by whoever was in the bathroom with him.
The ringing drowned out the voices but screamed in his ears and he couldn't tell you which one was worse.
Even if he didn't know who was holding him Virgil curled in on himself, leaning against the person with a groan.
The person played with his hair while he sealed his eyes shut, though the feeling was nice.
-=-
The ringing dulled after around three minutes, the person had moved them to lean against a wall and was still calmly running their fingers through Virgil's hair.
The ringing stopped and Virgil slowly opened his eyes. He looked around and when he realized he was actually lying in someone's arms and that wasn't some illusion cast from what just happened he jumped away from them like a cat if you stepped on their tail.
"Hey- it's okay- calm down-" The person said quickly, moving a hand towards Virgil
Virgil shook his head, his tongue clicked as he opened his mouth to breathe.
The person came a little closer and Virgil back away "I'm Roman, I'm not going to hurt you" The boy, Roman, tried to explain
Virgil shook his head again, he didn't trust himself to talk and he didn't trust this Roman kid.
They probably were making fun of him right now, but he really didn't want to know considering what just happened. "Virgil" he mumbled, his voice hoarse
He wound up coughing and his arm giving out, falling back into Roman but not getting up this time "I'm Virgil" he finished off, taking a deep breath in and wiping off his mouth
Roman smiles down to him a little "Nice to meet you, although I'd rather better circumstances this works fine" he chuckled a little "Could you tell me what just happened?" He cocked his head to the side like a confused puppy
Virgil shook his head "You'd think I'm crazy"
"I mean-" Roman chuckled a little "That seems unlikely" his eyes seemed to spark and he raised his hand in front of Virgil's face, small sparks were flickering over his fingertips
Virgil's eyes went wide, someone else had powers like him. The electricity shut down and Virgil thought for a moment "I can hear people's thoughts" he mumbled "But it's usually like everybody is talking at once and then that causes an anxiety attack and then- well-" he kinda shrugged "Then as a result of it ending a ringing starts in my head to drown out the voices"
Roman looked shocked and chuckled a little, he ruffled Virgil's hair "Sounds like someone doesn't know how to control his powers" he grinned
Virgil rolled his eyes and sighed, he gave a shrug and that's when the door opened.
"Roman, the teacher sa-" two more boys had walked in the room, one wore a light blue polo with a grey cardigan around his shoulders and the other wore a dark blue polo with a tie, they both wore glasses
"Logan, Patton come over here" Roman grinned, pulling in the speaker, the boy wearing dark blue, into the room with the other following behind "This is Virgil" he gestured to Virgil who's head was still in his lap "He's got powers too"
Virgil stared up at him with a glare "Wait seriously?!" The lighter one of was happy
"Patton, calm down, Roman could be wrong" supposedly Logan said, putting a hand on the other boy's shoulder.
Virgil hummed "I read minds-" he grumbled
"Okay maybe he wasn't wrong-" Logan huffed "Thats a first" Virgil and Patton giggled and chuckled.
"Patton can clone himself and Logan moves things with his mind-" Roman gestured to the respective people "But Patton and Me are still learning" he chuckled a little and looked down at Virgil.
Virgil hummed and nodded "You've for your own little group?"
"We've" Patton grinned "You're in it now!" He was clearly just a little too happy about this.
Virgil smiled, both because Roman was still playing with his hair and because now he had some people who didn't consider him a complete freak.
