It’s truly a sight, snow in May.

Summary:

It’s truly a sight, snow in May. He likes it. The snowflakes fall in his palm, quickly melting before he has a chance to inspect them. Though, this is not biology class, so why should he inspect and open up snowflakes like they do to frogs? He wants to run into it, experience the feeling of snow in May for the first time ever. Possibly, the only time ever.

But it doesn’t matter, he’s only a few—30 to be exact— minutes away from his wedding ceremony. He has enough there.

As snow falls he’s reminded of their third date, or how it seriously went bad for Dream. Okay, maybe ‘seriously’ is a bit of a stretch, but who wants to meet their non-official partner's family on their third date? It certainly wasn’t Dream, and he certainly still did not like how it played out. Partly he blames Techno.

Work Text:

It’s enchanting, as it should be, truly. It’s snowing outside, something that they didn’t plan for that made him majorly freak out. But, who wouldn’t? Well, it is his wedding day, after all. It is only natural he freaks out about a wild snowstorm in the middle of May. Right? He thinks it is, and no one’s there to tell him he’s crazy, so, who’s to say what he freaked out about or not. Well, at least the snow adds something. Something that’s theirs, Dream wonders if someone above is watching and thought to make it snow in May. After all, he and his fiancee, soon-to-be husband, have always been connected to snow.

They had their first date in winter, they had not been dating yet, but even then, during their first date, Dream knew they would. Or rather, he hoped.

He stands in front of his apartment complex, phone in hand, scrolling through the endless cycle of Twitter and Instagram that he really should delete for his own good. Not that he ever will, Dream has no self-control. His date was not late actually, it was that he came out early, he’s always been like that. Well, Dream is tired of standing, but it truly is only his fault for coming out too early. Techno told him he’d call when he needed to come out, his fault for not paying attention.

“Hullo,” He raises his eyes, the green orbs staring into ruby reds. So, maybe it’s his fault for going on a date with a man he hasn’t talked to prior to this, but Wilbur said it was fine and that Techno was a nice guy. And he couldn’t exactly say that he didn’t want to go out with his best friend’s brother, he’ll miss the vacations he’s invited to. Okay, don’t blame him, the yearly vacations to Italy that he and Wilbur go on have been his favorite memories. He’s not bound to give that up, so if going on a date with his brother is what he needs to do, then be it.

He smiles softly, pocketing his phone and going in for a small hug as a greeting. “Hi,” It catches the receiver off-guard but he goes along with it. Maybe it’s not a good idea to hug on the first date, but who was there to stop him? No one. So, exactly. “Uhm, where are we headed?” He wears a warm smile while also dying inside. Call him a multitasker.

Techno brings them to start walking, for never being in this neighborhood he seems to locate pretty well. “So, I tried really hard to think what to do. Wilbur suggested a dinner, which is, like, boring.” Dream chuckled, he was not sure if he liked this guy, but how different could he be from his twin who Dream liked very much? “Imagine wanting to eat on your first date, not special at all. Anyway, Tommy suggested an arcade, which is not that bad of an idea. But it’s not really a date, is it?” Dream, for the years he’s been best friends with Wilbur, has never met his family. Though, he’s heard of them a lot. So, suggesting an arcade really does sound like Tommy.

“Arcades are not good for first dates, trust me, I’ve been to many. It usually consists of children screaming and at least 5 drinks spilled on you. I swear, I smelled like homemade peach juice at the end. Do not recommend it.” Techno laughed, Dream found it adoring. “I’ve never really heard of Wilbur’s family— or yours, in a sense. Do you mind telling me when we walk? Or when we’re on our date, which, by the way, you still haven’t told me the name of.” Techno nods, looking at him from the side when he guides them to turn left. Dream doesn’t recognize this turn, but he doesn’t suspect being kidnapped quite yet. It’s rather offensive to think that already.

“Of course, of course. So, where was I? Ah, anyway, yeah. Arcades— not a good idea. So lastly I was left with old and good Philza, he recommended watching the sunrise or sunset together. Which, might I admit, wonderful idea. But it is winter, so it would be cold and yucky, I didn’t like the idea much.” Wonderful small christmas lights hang between the lamp posts, it reminds him of Christmases with his family. He likes the feeling. “So, in the end, my family was completely useless. Something they do rather often.” Dream wheezes, nudging his date's shoulder lightly, searching for some kind of reaction. He didn’t get one, huh.

Techno quiets down, some other couples passing them with wide smiles and loud stories that Dream can hear from 6 meters away. “Well, Wilbur is a serial romantic, it would make sense for him to recommend a dinner at candlelight. It’s the easier way to seduce someone, trust me, you don’t want to hear the stories.” Techno laughs, some pity found there. Dream supposes that Techno has heard the stories as well, maybe it’s something to laugh at together. “Now, tell me where we’re going or I’ll call Wilbur to be my daring, slightly unqualified, rescue.”

“Oh no, not my brother. But sure, uhm- so at the end I was left with just myself. So I wondered, what is the stuff that normal couples do? Not that we’re a couple, I— I just wanted to find something to- ah, whatever, we’re here anyway. Dream, uhm, can you ice skate? If you can’t it’s totally fine because I can, so I could teach you, and, you know..” Techno searches Dream’s face for expressions, some nervousness found behind those ruby eyes.

Dream laughs to ease the awkwardness. “It’s lovely, Techno. And I can manage my way on skates, but that doesn’t mean I won’t need your help. Last time I skated was when I was little with my parents. And, you don’t have to worry, it’s an adorable idea for a first date. I like it much better than a normal dinner date that people usually opt for. It’s a change of scenery.” Techno smiles, his face relaxing as he buys them two 2-hour tickets. Dream smiles, his thoughts racing of possible ways this could go.

They were always ones for winter, from their first date to the time they got stuck in an arcade overnight by accident. Winter has always been full of joy, glee, and happiness for them, it’s truly a wonder why they didn’t have their wedding in the winter. It would’ve made sense, wouldn’t it? But no, the plan got shut down after his mother had a surprise work trip that couldn’t have been delayed, and you can’t have a wedding without your mother present.

He watches the snow from his room window, it falls slowly and quietly, so much different from rain that he usually hates seeing. Rain makes noise, and along with rain usually comes the thunder which he doesn’t want to relive memories of. It’s not that he’s afraid of thunder, it’s that he doesn’t majorly enjoy it. Yeah. But snow falls gently, the snowflakes landing on his windowsill outside with no noise made.

It’s truly a sight, snow in May. He likes it. He reaches his hand out, something that he finds is especially hard to do in a wedding dress, but he manages. He’s not helpless like people assume, god he hates that made-up rumor. The snowflakes fall in his palm, quickly melting before he has a chance to inspect them. Though, this is not biology class, so why should he inspect and open up snowflakes like they do to frogs? It doesn’t matter, not really, no, the snow keeps falling as a wide smile appears on his face. He wants to run into it, experience the feeling of snow in May for the first time ever. Possibly, the only time ever.

But it doesn’t matter, he’s only a few—30 to be exact— minutes away from his wedding ceremony. He has enough there. So he thinks at least, there’s no one to convince him otherwise anyway.

So, third date, Dream has been on plenty before. It was not that he wasn’t ready or unprepared, nor was his hair a mess which it usually was on dates for some reason. It was like his hair didn’t want him to get boyfriends, not his fault, really.

He had gotten good at predicting his partners' decisions for dates in the past. Fundy was always cute and went with the classics: dinners and small little picnics in the park, the ginger hardly stepped out of comfort, careful not to mess anything up. It was one of the reasons it didn’t work for Dream, he never wanted something casual. George and he hardly had dates, something Dream hates quite a lot actually, he always liked to go out with his partner, even if it was as small as just a walk in the park. But George wasn’t really affectionate, something that Dream can respect quite a lot, knowing how hard it’s to be so unavailable in relationships sometimes himself. But he hoped for something, a little gesture to show that he cared, maybe a small home-cooked meal even. Anything. But, as per usual, George didn’t put any effort in.

Not that it didn’t surprise him, if anything he half expected it. But he likes to hope for the best in people. So with George it was usually a stay-home day, unless his now ex-boyfriend went to the park, alone, without telling Dream. Yeah, so Dream had gotten used to predicting his lovers’ decisions for outings. But not with Techno, everything was so hard to predict with that man.

Their first date was to an ice skating rink, now tell him that that’s normal. Certainly, it’s not something he was used to with his and Fundy’s first date to a horrible restaurant that served raw chicken. Now, on their second date, Techno brought him to a bookstore. A BOOKSTORE. Now, if Dream already didn’t like Wilbur’s brother before he certainly did then. He’s not sure if Wilbur told Techno of his obsession with books or if Techno figured it out himself, or maybe they have a hobby in common, but it certainly was a surprise and unexpected. And he certainly loved it.

They kissed outside the small bookstore, smiling as Techno walked him home in the winter atmosphere again.

So now, as he waits for Techno to pick him up, he has no idea what to expect. His mind cleared of anything ordinary and casual. It seemed like Techno liked the extremes (not that a bookstore was extreme, but it’s the thought). He hears the honk of a car and sees a familiar black BMW that he’s ridden in plenty of times with Wilbur while getting coffee or going to work. Dream smiles, waving slightly and kicking off from the curb he was sitting on in front of his apartment. “No walking this time?” He asks as he sits in the passenger seat, Techno’s face turned to him now.

“Nope,” His unofficial-official partner pops the p. To be clear, he and Techno had never explicitly said they were dating in the 2 months they’ve gone on dates and just talked over the phone because of busy work schedules, but it was clear, to their friends and whoever they were close to, that they were involved. Now, it wasn’t official ‘official’ where he called Techno his boyfriend but cute slip-ups like ‘love’ and ‘darling’ were brushed off on and they didn’t mention it if the other reacted to the pet name. So, he’s not really sure what to think right now. He’s not even completely sure if Techno’s a kidnapper or not yet. “It’s too far away, walking there would be kinda lame, you know.” He laughs, buckling his seat belt as Techno checks the rear windows for any cars.

Dream shrugs, getting out his phone. “You don’t suppose you could tell me where we’re going? I’m still not 100% sure that you’re not a serial killer.” Techno laughs, starting up the car and driving out his apartment complex’s parking lot. “Smile,” Though, Techno doesn’t take his eyes off the road like a responsible driver he still cracks a half-smile that Dream likes to see. It’s adorable, do not blame him. He snaps a quick photo and sends it to Sapnap who was asking what he was doing. Okay, so he’s not doing Techno, but it shows that he’s with him. If Sap thought dirty thoughts, then it’s Sap’s fault, not his.

“For all you know I still could be, taking you over to my main base right now.” Dream wheezes, still suspiciously side-eyeing Techno as a form of joke. His partner laughs as well. “And, all I can say is that you will like it. I promise.” Techno’s promises mean something to him, in the short amount of time Dream has known the man he’s always been truthful to his promises. Techno promised to get him a white rose for their second date and he did, Dream carried it around when they went to the bookstore. It was thoughtful. Dream closes his phone, looking out the window as snow is starting to melt. It’s at the end of February, the temperatures lowering. He sees a couple of road signs on the way, but he blinks and they’re gone and he doesn’t remember what was written on there. Not that he particularly wants to know, he trusts Techno in choosing the right places to go out.

Not that he’s glad for Wilbur, but he’s god fucking happy about how Wilbur’s brother turned out and the way his brain works. He took them to a planetarium. Now, maybe he geeked out too much, but it didn’t seem to bother Techno by the way he laughed at his antics, so he continued to read the small inscribed texts put next to the planets in their solar system. He grabbed Techno’s hand out of excitement, pulling him towards the text and pictures talking about the 79 moons of Jupiter. He read out loud quietly, feeling as Techno’s thumb rubbed circles into the back of his hand, it was sweet. “That’s the Callisto moon,” He points to the picture of a starry-looking rainbow-ish moon. It looks pretty in his opinion. “Isn’t it pretty?” He looks up at Techno as he asks the question, the latter already looking down on him.

He finds Techno endearing. Techno smiles at him, placing a small kiss on his forehead. “It is, do you like it?”

“Yes, how did you know I like stars or books?” He asks, already assuming that Wilbur is the spy that he’s befriended. Not that he minds it, quite the opposite really.

Techno laughs. “I have my own sources ” Techno pauses as his phone rings, Dream feels the vibrations in his pocket. He lets go of his partner's non-partner's hand to allow him to pocket his phone. “Excuse me.” He steps away from the blonde, Dream continues to read the little inscription placed next to the photo. He doesn’t think much of the phone call, it’s probably family by the way a smile plastered on Techno’s face before he answered the call.

“So,” Techno re-enters his vision, gently intervening their hands again. “That was Phil, he um-” Techno cleared his throat. “Turns out that Tommy fell while jumping rooftops, they’re in emergency care with the family. Phil wants me there.” Techno tries his best to not sound hurt as talking of his little brother’s accident but it’s really hard to act when he’s literally in emergency care. Dream’s hand goes cold, even with the warmth added on with Techno’s hand clasped in his it’s still cold. “I’m sorry, Dream, I really wanted this to go well. But, I have to go to the hospital. I can drop you back home before going to the hospital, really, it’ll be-”

“I’m coming with you.” He assures, already pulling them away from the exhibit and towards the illuminated red exit sign he has his eyes set on. So, thus he found himself in the hospital waiting room as Tommy was getting assigned a room, sitting next to Phil who tried his best to act like he wasn’t staring at the new-addition Techno brought with him when they arrived. So no, it wasn’t awkward at all, and Dream didn’t call Sap panicking not 3 hours later. He didn’t.

It was horrible, or not that much really, the worst was Tommy being over-dramatic over wearing crutches for a few weeks. There was nothing fatal. Yet, one of the worst memories of Dream’s life.

He finds his way outside his hotel room, his wedding dress flowing behind him beautifully. He doesn’t see any guests around, maybe the singular band members who were preparing for the reception. Okay, that’s a lie, he spots his mother doing..— something. Whatever his mother does, really. She seems to spot him almost immediately, rushing over with a haste in her steps, or, at least, how fast she could in a long dress.

He smiles at her, pulling up his dress so he could meet her halfway. It’s hard to walk in long wedding dresses, and why was he the one to wear a long dress which it’s hard to move in, after all? He’d much rather enjoy wearing a suit like Techno.

“Dream!” She greets, a wide smile on her face. Her eyes are almost tearing up and he’s not even walking the altar yet. “You look beautiful, honey, your dress is amazingly picked out. The tailors did an amazing job.” She praises, his cheeks flushed over with a bright pink color. Puffy hugs him as she finally reaches her son. It’s cute, if one was to snap a picture of this he’d frame in his and Techno’s house. “What are you doing here? The ceremony is not for another 20 minutes, Techno might see you. You know it’s bad luck to see the groom in his wedding dress.” Her mother was always one for traditions, not that she didn’t support Dream’s choice in sexuality. While also being traditional Puffy was very supportive of all his decisions.

“You know I don’t believe in that stuff.” He pauses, looking around for any signs of soft-pink hair. He sees none, he turns back to Puffy and her curious gaze. “Can you please get Techno for me?” Puffy looks skeptical but she nods either way. It’s disrespectful to say no to the groom either way.

It’s not much longer that quiet footsteps become louder and a familiar face enters his vision. “Hey, are you okay? I’m just setting up the final details for our ceremony and I get a worried Puffy coming to me telling me you look sad.” Techno grabs ahold of the sides of his arms, his eyes laced with concern.

“No, I’m fine, you know my mother. She likes to overcompensate everything.” Dream laughs, all worry leaving his mind. Techno smiles, connecting the two lovers in a kiss. “I was just in my room, and you know, it’s snowing right now, right?” He looks hopefully into his soon-to-be husband’s eyes. It’s so loving.

His fiancee nods, “I am aware of that fact, yes.” Dream chuckles at the simple answer.

“Will you come outside with me? Please, it’s like our time.” It’s almost like winter, so close to one. It's snowing. Dream can’t find it any more adoring.

Techno’s brows furrow, “It's snowing outside, my love.” Techno says, Dream only scoffs at the stupid answer like he’s not aware of it. Yet Techno’s ruby eyes have understanding in them as he finally nods, he’s never been able to say no to Dream, it’s sweet. It’s lovable, he’s lovable, something he didn’t expect to be. Techno pulls them towards the exit, helping Dream with his dress.

It’s cold outside, he won’t lie, but the chill air doesn’t do much when his partner’s big arms are around him in a loving manner. It’s sweet, so warm in the middle of May while snow falls. It’s their moment, no matter to other couples in California who are experiencing the same thing, it’s their moment. It’s such a cliche, but isn’t everything in their relationship a cliche?—from ice skating dates to movie nights at his small apartment, from hours spent at evenings together when watching the sunset to hours spent at home in bed with no desire to get out and start the day.

It’s all a cliche with them. The pictures posted on Instagram of their pinterest-worthy dates to their friends who call them a power couple. And he can’t say that he hates it, he loves the cliche compliments and unexpected dates that Techno drags him on in the middle of the day. He loves their planned wedding that certainly did not go according to the original plan, loves the guests that await for them to walk down to the aisle to seal their love with a kiss.

But it’s not just about a singular kiss that seals their love, because if he was to bring a stranger up on the altar and kiss him before the officiant then it would mean nothing. No, it’s not about the one kiss that seals his and Techno’s love, it’s the hundreds that they share between dates and sleep-ins and vacations to Italy he now shares with his partner instead of his best friend. But now, his partner is his best friend. Do not tell Wilbur, he won’t be glad to hear about that.

But it doesn’t matter, he loves Technoblade.
