Chapter Text
Hisashi said he would come home late that night due to work being overloaded (a usual occurrence) so Inko and Izuku decided to make dinner before he got back, he would help her by getting the ingredients from the fridge and setting the table up as she prepared the oven. The day was Monday and Izuku had just turned 4. It was his birthday. Everything felt so calm and quiet as he played with his new All Might merch, Hisashi had bought him the most recent March consisting of an All Might: silver age PJ set and various varieties of All Might 1/2 scale figures (even one with All Might wearing ballet uniform!) Inko had gotten him various All might posters with his favorite phrase: I AM HERE!! That night felt so calming even if that day he was deemed quirkless. Inko was sitting at the table with a cup of coffee to keep an eye on the oven, she was making Izuku's favorite meal, Katsudon, at Izuku's request. She sighed and stared at her son, eyeing him as she remembered what had happened that morning.
"Izu!" Inko calls out to her son, "It's time to get ready! make sure you've got everything!" Izuku collects things as he rushes around his colorful and scattered-out bedroom. All might posters filling the walls and all might figurines covering shelves, All Might merch upon All Might merch covered his small room. When he stood in the middle it made him look even smaller than he was. Izuku runs out of his room with a yellow backpack half his size filled to the brim with All Might plushies, Inko slid a little giggle as her son ran towards her with sweat dripping down his face from the weight of his bag, "No Izu! you only need one! Hahaha!-" she giggled as she helped him choose what to bring from the bag he had brought out, it caused him to sulk a little but he didn't care for too long as he remembered that he was going to find out his quirk today.
Izuku was beaming with excitement as he got his shoes on, causing Inko to smile as she brushed her hair. As she stared into the mirror she felt guilt bubbling in her stomach, her quirk was a multi-generation one, one that's gotten weaker over the generations. She had a high suspicion that Izuku wasn't going to get a quirk, but she had hope in her husband's quirk, maybe it would be something kind of fire-like or maybe even a mutation if he's lucky but the possibility of that ever happening is low. She felt like she was failing him and her husband, it's not like it's his fault if he ends up quirkless it's just fate in her eyes but how would her husband react..? Thankfully he had gone to work early that morning to hit the trains before it got busy, she didn't want him to come along to find out about her son's quirk. They hadn't even left the house and she had already deemed him quirkless. Inko tugged on the knots in her hair as she got more and more stressed to only then feel a tug at her skirt, she looked down to see Izuku staring up at her nervously as he held the bottom of his shirt tight. Inko saw his eyes and looked at herself in the mirror to see small tears streaming down her face. Izuku stared at her worriedly, "Mama? Why are you crying? Does your head hurt-?" Inko looked into his eyes once more as she wiped her tears and responded with, "No Hunny, I'm fine! I'm just so happy to see you growing up so fast.." Izuku could see she was lying but instead decided to perk up and say "Mama! You don't need to worry anymore cause when I find out my quirk ill do anything to become a hero and keep you safe so you don't have to cry anymore!" she shook the sad face she had to replace it with a huge smile. "You're going to be the best hero who has ever lived Izu! so no matter what happens today never give up your dream ok..?"
"OK!"
"I love you Izu never forget that."
"Ok, mama!"
That morning they left the house with hope in their heart, Inko hoping Izu had a quirk after all and Izuku hoping he can become the NO#1 Hero.
Arriving at the hospital, Inko checks in at the desk. "Izuku can you go sit down over there for me? mama will be back in just a second, I just need to talk to this lady!" Inko walks away from Izuku to sort the paperwork out leaving Izuku to look at his surroundings, with his shiny red and white boots squeaking across the shining clean floors of the hospital he reaches a seat only a little far from his mum. He looks around darting his eyes towards the halls of numbered doors to the large glass ceiling that let in sunlight to the white and blue painted walls. He thought about what quirk he would have. Maybe he could be like Kacchan! He wanted to be a hero with Kacchan and to save those in danger. "Izuku!" He looks over to the sound of his mum calling him out, "Izuku let's go see the doctor now, he's waiting for us Hunny." he gets up from his cushioned seat and makes his way across to his mum. 'im going to have the strongest quirk and become a hero with Kacchan!'
"I'm sorry to tell you this but you're quirkless."
Huh. Izuku stares down at his hands in disbelief. 'Me..quirkless..?' no he couldn't be! "THERE HAS TO BE SOME SORT OF MISTAKE SIR!" he shouted. He couldn't believe him, He was going to be a hero. He was going to have a quirk. He was going to protect his family but now what.. he has no quirk how is he ever going to become like All Might..?
"I'm sorry kid but it's true! Look at these scans here." the doctor taps at a piece of paper showing the x-ray of Izuku's foot. Izuku looks up with tears and snot running down as he gasps for small breathes of air between whimpers. "Here. His pinky toe has two joints. Usually, people with quirks, have one joint in their pinky, but as you see here Izuku has two. I'm sorry kid but it's not going to happen." his mum stares at him mortified. What was her husband going to think?
Izuku stares at his toys with a worried smile on his face as he remembered the events that had happened that morning, he stares into space as he tries to think of what he was going to do about Kacchan.. he didn't want to ruin his future just because he turned out to be quirkless. The calm atmosphere growing into one of guilt and anxiety, he started to grab at his arms at the thought of what was going to happen to him. He's never met a quirkless hero let alone a quirkless person. He was never going to protect his family now because he had no quirk. Inko watched as her son clawed at the skin on his arms causing them to bleed, blood dripped down his arm hitting the floor causing her to stand up in shock. 'He's never done this before-' she runs over to Izu, grabbing a cloth and some plasters on her way over. "Izuku move your arms for mama! you're bleeding!" she cleans up the nail mark he left in the skin of his small trembling arms. She looks up at her son with wide eyes. Her son smiling right at her with tears falling at fast rates down his face. "Hey Hunny what's wrong you're crying and you look sick are you ok?!"
"I'm ok mama.."
"Izu you're not ok you're crying and you just clawed at your own skin! Hunny tell me what's wrong!"
*BANG* A loud knock at the door startled them. They both look up.
"Oh, your dad must be home.."
Izuku sat silently not moving to greet his dad. Feeling like he's let him down.
"I'm home!" rang through the house from the door, Hisashi hugging up Inko and spinning her around, only to have Inko hold a straight face. Him responding with a confused face facing her way. "How are you all? How were the doctors? I Bet your quirk is amazing Izuku!" he walks over to Izuku to hug him and hear about his day, only to see Izuku's eyes wide and empty with smudged tears across his face with plasters covering the nail marks on his arm. "Izuku are you ok? What happened? did Katsuki push you again!? I told you to stand up for yourself! you've got a quirk now so teach him whos bo--"
"He's quirkless." Inko deadpanned.
"huh..?"
"He's quirkless Hisashi."
The whole room going silent. Only for the silence to be interrupted by loud feet storming across the floor toward Inko, after coming to a loud slap that came from Hisashi's hand that just slapped Inko across the face, leaving a red mark behind. Izukus ears rang as if it had happened to him, tears stopping in their tracks leaving him speechless. He stood to see Inko sitting on the floor holding her face, Hisashi stood above her screaming words he couldn't hear, his ears numbing and going silent. He ran towards Hisashi to hold him away from Inko 'Even if I'm quirkless I should at least try to help her!' he thought as he held Hisashi’s arms trying to pull him away causing Hisashi to stumble, Izuku moved to stand in front of Inko with his arms out, "STOP HURTING MAMA! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? YOU'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE!?". Hisashi closed in on him when all of a sudden the world suddenly went black.
An alarm rang throughout his room, causing him to jolt out of bed. His room was now a dark and empty space compared to his childhood room, He stares at his alarm clock showing the time 7:30 am blinking on the screen, he stretches wide with tired watery eyes turning to his closed curtains. Izuku pulled open his white curtains to let the light shine in on the room. This wasn't his childhood room anymore. Only a few years ago did he move into Auntie Mitsuki's house, even now it feels as if he doesn't belong there, living with Kacchan was hard especially with the fact he doesn't have a quirk. After Izuku was revealed to be quirkless Katsuki then saw him as useless. A mere bug under his foot. Izuku himself saw how he felt about him, but then he was forced into living with him at the end of his elementary years due to losing his parents so suddenly. Izuku walks over to his closet pulling out his black and white uniform that is too big for him, refusing to let Auntie buy him a smaller size. He doesn't want her to be wasting money on someone who was loitering in her house, as much as he loves Auntie Mitsuki, He doesn't want to be there longer than he has to because of how Katsuki treats him but for him to stay clean and for him to survive in some way. He HAS to stay with Auntie. For Mama.
Izuku's long sleeves hang from his wrists. He liked it this way. He rolls up his long trouser legs so he doesn't trip, he packs his bag with his hero notes along with his school books, stationery and bandages. Izuku doesn't like making Auntie worry, so when he gets beaten up he patches himself up before returning home, giving her excuses like 'oh I tripped on the way home..!' or 'a dog bit me haha..' and 'PE got really intense and I got caught up with some stronger students-!'. he doesn't like lying to her but that's all he can do to stop her from worrying too much for him.
He opens his door to greet Auntie and Uncle in the kitchen... along with Kacchan already stuffing his face with food. Izuku shoots a small glare his way turning before he could catch on. Placing his bag down, he sits across the table from Katsuki. "Good morning, Izuku!" Mitsuki calls from the other side of the kitchen, "Did you sleep ok? You come home late last night.." she looks at him with worried eyes. "I'm ok." Izuku responds straight-faced and flat, "I had to do something last night. Don't worry about me! I'm fine!" He pulls a small smile across his face, "See?". " I guess that's ok then.. don't stay out too long though. I worry about you know?.." she hands him some coffee and some toast only for Izuku to drink the coffee and leave the toast. Auntie stares at the swept aside plate. "Do you not like it?" she asks to only see Izuku stare with wide eye, he responds with "N-no it's nothing like that!! It's just I'm not hungry in the mornings remember?" waving his hands around frantically to get his point across. Mitsuki sighs looking up to Masaru with worrying eyes, only for him to shake his head. "I-I'm going to get going ok? I'll see later Auntie and Uncle!" he calls out as he rushes to get his scuffed up red and white boots on. "Goodbye! make sure you come home early tonight!"
"Ok, I'll try!" Izuku swings his murky yellow backpack round onto his back making sure he could run fast enough to get to school before Katsuki.
