Chapter Text
Lin was sitting in front of the mirror and was trying to decide how to wear her hair. She tried putting it in a loose low bun but it felt too loose, high ponytail seemed too usual, a braid was the way she usually wore her hair in training so this also felt wrong. She attempted putting it in a french braid but this didn't work when she was supposed to do it by herself and asking her parents wasn't an option - she'd probably braid it better than Kanto and Toph was blind so she'd probably use it as an excuse. She was still in a robe after the shower and wasn't anywhere near ready but the time was running.
Frustrated, Lin let her hair down, the raven-black locks falling onto her shoulders. She looked good with it down but she'd grow frustrated with it falling into her face and food. Sometimes she wished she inherited her father's slightly textured hair, it didn't look so boring as her straight ones did when he used to have it long.
She sighed looking at her reflection, this whole date was making her more nervous than it should. She even put on some makeup for one dumb dinner with-
„You're going out?” Kanto's voice stopped Lin's thoughts. He was leaning against the doorframe of Lin's room.
„Yeah, I told mom. Figured, she'd tell you” Lin shrugged as she tried putting her hair in a low ponytail this time.
„She didn't” Kanto sat down on his daughter's bed and caught eye contact with her through the mirror.
„It looks dumb, doesn't it?” Lin asked as she put the ponytail on her shoulder, hair reaching way below her breasts. It made Lin wonder when did it get so long.
„It looks nice but if it feels wrong, change it”
Lin sighed as she pulled the hair tye down her long hair. „Any ideas?” she raised an eyebrow.
Kanto pushed himself up and walked up to Lin. „May I?” he asked. Lin nodded and Kanto ran his fingers through her soft hair. He separated the front section of Lin's hair and held it at the back of her head. „Hair tye?” he reached his hand out and Lin silently placed said object in his hand. Kanto made a quick job of securing the section of hair before he circled Lin and turned her head towards him. He pulled a few strands at the very front before turning her by her shoulders back towards the mirror.
Lin smirked, she finally didn't look like she was going to training but at the same time, her hair would not fall into her face.
„I used to wear my hair like this all the time when I had it longer, keeps your hair off of the face but you still have a chance to show it off” Kanto smirked at his daughter through the mirror.
„Thanks”
„Can I know where are you going?” Kanto asked.
„Don't know yet, we'll figure it out later” Lin shrugged.
„And who's we?” the man raised an eyebrow.
Lin turned so she was looking at her father not through the mirror this time. „Dad...” she looked away, blushing.
„Wha- I'm just asking! It's-” Kanto stopped as his mouth went agape. „You're going on a date!” he exclaimed.
„No! I- I am not!” Lin protested.
„I can tell you're lying” Kanto crossed his arms on his chest.
„Ok, I am...” Lin admitted. Damn, having a truth-seer parent was a pain. „But don't tell mom, she doesn't know” she whispered her plead.
„Alright. Should I give him the dad talk when he shows up or wait a little?” Kanto thought out loud.
Lin glared at her father in response.
„Her?” Kanto asked. „Does the dad talk work the same when it comes to a girl?”
Lin rolled her eyes and sighed at her dad. Ever since she came out to her parents as bisexual he keeps on trying to figure out how he should act if Lin dated a woman. It's cute since he's being supportive but gets annoying when Lin tries to get ready.
„Ok, ok... I'm leaving you alone” Kanto said retreating from Lin's room.
„Close the door, please!” and with those words, the door clicked shut.
Lin turned to her bed where she already had her clothes ready. Oversized light green shirt and black Bermuda pants were a safe choice she picked earlier, no matter the place she wouldn't be underdressed or overdressed.
Lin made a quick job of putting herself into the clothes before she added a few silver rings on her fingers, a simple, shiny bracelet she got from her father for her birthday, and a necklace with rose quartz she got from Kya when she was visiting not too long ago with matching earrings. She rarely could wear jewelry due to her job but whenever she had a chance, it made her feel good.
The metalbender heard a knock on the door and quickly took one last glance at herself before rushing to the door, wishing neither of her parents would make it there before her.
Unfortunately, once she got downstairs her father was already talking to her date what caused her to groan internally. The tall waterbender didn't seem to be uncomfortable by her father's talk but it would be a surprise if she was, after all, they knew each other pretty well.
„I'm ready!" Lin made her presence known as she rounded the corner of the stairs. „Could have let me know someone's here” she mumbled to her father as she was pulling the pair of combat boots onto her feet.
„It's just Kya, I- you two are going on a date together?!” Kanto exclaimed.
Lin quickly shushed her father. „Mom. doesn't. know.” she reminded.
„You two are going on a date together?!” Kanto repeated whisper yelling.
„We are and please shut up about it” Lin whisper yelled back as crouched to tie her shoes.
Kanto looked between the two young women, Lin's face was red with blush as she was fighting with shoelaces, trying to do it as fast as possible, and Kya was just grinning at the whole interaction. „You know what? I like that. The two of you” he said.
„Thank you but we're currently trying to find out if we like that so please stop making it harder” Lin pleaded as she straightened up her posture.
„Oh, ok... Sorry. Have fun, you two” Kanto hugged his daughter before she had a chance to run out of the door. „Bring her back before midnight” he smirked at the waterbender who was about to be dragged away from the front door.
„I will! Thank you!” Kya yelled as Lin was holding her by her arm and dragging her away.
Kanto closed the door with a smile painted on his face. Kya would be a perfect choice for his girl, maybe Lin would finally learn how to relax sometimes...
As soon as he turned around two people were peeking at him from around the corner.
„Dad, did Lin just go on a date with Kya?” Suyin asked.
„Yeah, and she thinks Kya didn't tell you two about it earlier” Kanto chuckled.
„How is this kid making such a good detective again?” Toph raised an eyebrow.
„She was taught by the best” Kanto grinned.
„They would be nice together...” Toph sighed.
„Yeah, Kya being all chill and Lin a stick in the mud. Sounds like a perfect balance!” Su said half-jokingly before disappearing into her room.
„To be honest I thought that if she were to date any of Katara and Aang's kids it would be Tenzin... They're more alike” Kanto thought out loud.
„I like that one more”
„Yeah, me too” Kanto agreed.
