As Long As Gods Shall Live

Summary:

“Electricity tingled at the base of my skull. I did know the song. An early memory surfaced of Zeus and Leto singing this melody when Zeus visited Artemis and me as children on Delos. [...] It was a song older than empires—about two lovers separated and longing to be together.”

An attempt at what could have been the song Calypso and Apollo sang in The Dark Prophecy (inspired by a post by chirons-tail-curlers on tumblr!).

Notes:

I ask for forgiveness in advance because I don't really know how to write songs and this looks more like a poem– although it's not like I can write those either lol
Also, technically it's supposed to end on 'As long as gods shall live, so long shall I love you' but for rhyming purposes it doesn't now <3

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

In the heavy heat of the afternoon, the sea carries the memory of your laughter

And as I’m sitting, alone, in the midst of a thousand poppies

In the rustling of the field it becomes immortal, your voice, my pilaster

In the lament of swallows and quails I still hear your song,

and I uselessly stretch my hand behind me to guide you among the rocks;

And when I raise my head to find the Great Bear,

It breaks my heart to remember that you can't be here

That night I couldn't stand looking at you,

Because it wounded me not to see you again—

I died thinking of you so far away

In the next day we knew we would find no gain

But we kept looking at one another, we remembered each line

We studied the flecks in our eyes - I gazed at yours, you at mine

And even when Selene rose up

I still listened to your murmurs and breathing

And I still felt the warmth of your hands

As you traced my scars, every sign of my living

That night I couldn't stand touching you,

Because it hurt not to feel you near me—

I died thinking of not holding you

The next day we knew we would search for what isn’t

But we danced with the fireflies, love, side against side

We gave meaning to Atlas’ grief

And when you asked me if I would forget you, late in the night

The kiss on your forehead gave you relief

I can’t promise you we’ll see each other again

Not in this life nor in the next

But bear this promise in mind

As long as gods shall live, so long I shall love you

May I forget all the rest.

Notes:

Check out 'Ballad About A Smoke-Filled Wagon' by Alexander Kochetkov, I read it before writing this and I kind of cried
