Not So Good a Feast

Summary:

Morgana ends up with food poisoning, merlin and Gwen take care of her

Work Text:

The best feast in years Arthur had called it, well a few hours ago it seemed like it had been. But half way through, Morgana had started feeling strange and had to have Gwen escort her back to her chambers. For a few minutes the two sat on the bed as Morgana tried and failed to ease the discomfort in her stomach, too no avail. She tried laying down on her back, on her side but it only seemed to make the queasy feeling grow even more and before she knew it, she was rushing to her chamber pot to expel everything she had eaten just hours before.

Gwen rushed to her side, pulling her hair out of the firing line and rubbing her back "that's it My Lady, get it all out" she says softly, watching on with a concerned expression when Morgana's vomiting turned into harsh dry heaving. Once it was clear that this round of vomiting was over, she quickly alerted the guards and asked for Gaius to get there as quickly as he could, before turning back to her mistress and helping her to cross the room to her bed once more.

It wasn't long before a knock at the door was heard "come in, Gaius!" She calls, still trying to get Morgana comfortable for the time being. She heard the door open and almost did a double take at the fact that, instead of Gaius standing beside them, it was merlin, who gave Morgana a concerned but knowing look "merlin? What are you doing here?" Morgana asks in a raspy tone, which gets him moving towards the water jug almost instantly.

It was then Gwen realised he had the bag Gaius had given him less than a year ago, "Gaius is helping two others displaying the same symptoms as you" he responds, handing the cup of water to Morgana but keeping his hand underneath it incase she dropped it. When she'd finished as much as she could bear to stomach, she looks at him curiously "a bad case of food poisoning, a bit of rest and a few tonics to calm your stomach and fully expel whatever caused it and you'll be fine" he reasures her, causing Morgana to relax into her pillows.

Merlin gave her a tonic to expel everything first, getting several chamber pots out of the bag before doing so and smiling sympathetically at the whine Morgana made at the sight. It wasn't long before the tonic kicked in, and it was then that Gwen saw her friends demeanor change from his usual self to acting physician. He did everything in his power to make Morgana as comfortable as possible, even whilst she was actively vomiting, checking her temperature every couple of minutes and muttered words of reassurance and comfort until the spells were over.

The only time Merlin appeared to grow concerned, was when Morgana's temperature rose to a level he didn't like "Gwen could you get a bowl of water and a cloth?" He asks whilst rubbing Morgana's back as she let out a series of coughs, Gwen had thought ahead and whilst he was taking care of their friend, she had quietly slipped out and got some. He smiled when he noticed this and as Morgana leaned back for the 5th time, he gently pressed the cloth against her forehead, whilst Gwen wiped her face and neck to ensure she didn't grow any warmer.

After a few more rounds of violent vomiting, Morgana was left dry heaving once more and to both of their suprise, began whimpering "here, this will help" Merlin says gently, handing her the tonic to calm and sooth her stomach, which she downs without thinking about it "do you think you can keep some water down?" He asks as he and Gwen pull her up and help her back to bed once more, at her nod he hands her a cup "small sips" he says sternly, causing a small smile to appear on their friends lips and a quiet quip of "you can't talk to me like that" that sounds far too fond to be taken seriously.

Merlin continues to monitor Morgana's temperature and once she's got into a comfortable position laying down, he places the cloth back on her forehead, watching as the colour slowly starts coming back to her cheeks "get some sleep, you'll feel much better in the morning" Merlin says gently as he moves to leave, only to stop when Morgana reached out and grabs his wrist "thank you, Merlin" she whispers softly, on the verge of falling asleep, which causes merlin to smile and pat her hand before putting it back under the covers "you're welcome, My Lady" he whispers before moving to the door.

Gwen is quick to follow him and he smiles softly, trying to calm the worry he sees in her eyes "with a little rest she'll be back to her usual self, any changes send for me immediately" he says, resting a hand on his friends arm to reassure her that everything was going to be okay, making Gwen smile and nod "thank you for getting here so quickly" she says shakily, causing Merlin to realise that this had scared her more than he realised and pulls her in for a hug "I'll always be here to help, Gwen" he says into her hair, not pulling away until she does, smiling when he sees a small smile on her face and moves to leave. He watches for a few seconds as she heads over to Morgana's bed and lays down on top of the covers "sleep well, both of you" he says, before closing the door and heading to check in with Gaius.
