Alaric Salzman

Summary:

When your old friend Damon needs your help, you are only too happy to lend him a hand with your powers, but you weren't expecting to meet your old friend Alaric.

Work Text:

"If that's not Alaric," you say with a laugh before you pull him into your arms.
"(Y/N)?" He asks, surprised, before pulling you out of his embrace to take a closer look at you.
"Yes, I am." You say with a laugh, before falling back into his arms.
How long had you not seen each other? Two, maybe three years?
He had said goodbye a little awkwardly with the words "I have to do this, see you soon."
You kept wondering what went wrong, that he left not only the city but you as well.
You knew he had to deal with his wife's death, but how could he just leave you, his best friend, behind?
You asked yourself this question every day, over and over again, maybe you should have been there for him more, maybe you could have done or said something that would have made him stay, but maybe he had to go as he had said.
"You look great," you stated.
“I can only give that back. What brings you to this city? ”He asked with a smile, but although the smile was real, you could see that fear was reflected in his eyes.
"I have friends here and they need me." You didn't want to say anything specific, after all his wife was obsessed with vampires, so even more supernatural things wouldn't help.
“Friends, in this town? Who exactly? ”His smile was now completely gone.
“Maybe we should talk about it another time, I'm late. But if we could have a drink afterward, I would be very happy. ”You smiled as you said that, but your smile was not real.
You didn't want him to ask questions, you didn't want him to find out anything either, that just couldn't happen.
"Gladly, is your number still the same?" He asked.
"You still have my number?"
"Why, surely."
"You rarely call it for that, but yes it's still the same." The first part was rougher than it was meant to be, but you were injured and he should notice that.
He was about to say something again, but you had already turned around, he could also apologize later, you had to go to a meeting.

"There you are at last." Damon eyed you.
"I was hoping that the next time I met I would only see your head, impaled on a stick."
"And I had hoped that your fire would swallow you at some point and yet you are standing in front of me, so not a good day for both of us." He countered.
You stared at him a bit angry, but then a big grin spread across your face and you run into his arms.
He immediately picks you up and pulls you into a tight hug.
"Nice to see you," he whispered softly as if he were afraid someone might hear it.
"I agree."
He puts you back on the floor and examines you "you look good."
"Thank you, I would like to give that back, but ..." you point to his tattered clothes.
"I know, I know," he waved off and offered you a glass of whiskey.
With thanks, you decline what makes him drink your glass.
"Why am I here?"
"I'll explain that to you in a moment, we're still waiting for the others, who also have no sense of punctuality."
"The others?" But before the last word was fully spoken, the door opened.
Some people came in and a somewhat short and concise introductory round began.
You already knew Stefan, you hugged him happily before you shook hands with the others in a friendly manner.
Everyone seemed to be quite friendly, even the girl who looked amazingly like Katerina.
Bonnie, Caroline, Tyler, Stefan, Elena, and Jeremy took a seat, you just sat on one of the armrests before Damon spoke.
He explained to you what you've been missing lately and then moved on to the real problem.
A group of vampires and werewolves had got together to get Elena and Stefan's blood, they already had Stefan, who luckily managed to escape, but now they had a boy named Matt in their power.
"And why do they want their blood?" You asked.
"For a cure, but that should only work if both of them die, which is also questionable," Tyler interjected.
"And how can I help there?" You asked the next question.
"I like to know it, too."
You flinched, a little startled, before turning around. Alaric stood behind you.
"What are you doing here?" You asked, shocked.
"Damon is, and I know how hard it is to believe, my best friend and Jeremy and Elena are somehow my protégés."
"Oh okay." Came from you confused.
“And what do you want with her? And since when have you known about all these things and why have you never said anything? ”Alaric said, slightly annoyed.
"Why didn't I say anything? And you? ”Meanwhile you got up and walked towards him.
"I came to town to find vampires and kill the one who has my wife's conscience and kill him."
"And did you have success?"
“No, not directly. I found him, but instead of killing him, he is now my best friend. "
"You killed Isobel?" You asked angrily in the direction of Damon.
He raised his hands for protection, "I transformed her," he said curtly.
“She wanted it that way.” Stefan intervened.
"And you are here, because...?" It came from Alaric.
"He doesn't know what you are?" Damon intervened with a laugh, which you punished with a dirty look.
"That's complicated," you started slowly.
"No it's not," Damon intervened again.
"Yes, it is." You said warningly.
"I'm something of a demon," you said softly, watching his reaction closely.
"Demon?" He asked, overwhelmed. "Since when?"
"Always, ever since this world has existed, and a demon is not really the right term." Damon interfered again.
"She is somehow a demigod." Stefan tried to help you.
"Oh?" said Tyler.
"I am the daughter of a hell being and that of a human." You finally said.
"Hell beings? Like the devil? ”Elena asked confused.
“The devil doesn't exist like that,” you tried to explain.
While you tried to explain what exactly you are, that you could somehow switch off your magical side yourself and what exactly you can, Alaric tried to inform you about his last years.
The conversation was bad enough in itself, but the others kept throwing up questions.
It was half an hour before Damon threw himself in between. "Enough!" He said aloud.
"He's right, we can argue later, what's your plan?" You asked, without looking up at Alaric, he'd probably just stare angrily at you anyway.
Damon gratefully accepted the attention and explained his plan. He explained how you attract the vampires and werewolves by handing them Elena and Stefan in exchange for Matt.
Caroline would take him away and heal him while Damon negotiates that he can kill Elena and Stefan himself. You should make her death look real while Bonnie keeps her in check and Tyler, Jeremy, and Alaric could kill one at a time.

Until the killing, too, the plan had worked out wonderfully.
You were now standing in the middle of an old barn, surrounded by vampires, werewolves, and their witches, who no one had expected.
Bonnie couldn't keep her in check, so the boys couldn't kill them.
"And now?" You asked Damon, annoyed, while still making sure that Stefan and Elena looked dead.
"I don't know, I thought you had another nice trick."
"Maybe I have one," you said softly, although the vampires could hear you anyway.
"But you have to do exactly what I say when I say it."
He nodded and promised you to do exactly what you would ask.
"Tell Alaric that I'm sorry, I never wanted him to know what kind of monster I can be." You said softly before taking the deaths of Elena and Stefan.
"Get out of here and let Bonnie contain it, she'll understand." You shouted before you gathered your strength.
Damon had promised to do what you asked, so he took Stefan and Elena out and gave Bonnie the instructions before turning to Alaric and repeating your words.
"What am I supposed to contain?" Bonnie had asked while Alaric asked why you wouldn't tell him yourself.
"How does she manage that the vampires and werewolves didn't follow you?" Jeremy interfered.
"I don't have an answer for either," Damon said softly before the barn went up in flames.
"I think I should contain that," Bonnie said before she tried to keep the flames in the bay.
"What is she doing, she's going to die," Alaric yelled, but before he could run towards the barn and you, Damon had grabbed him.
"I'm sorry, but I'm not going to let you run into your doom." Damon came justifying it.
"But she's dying," said Alaric angrily.
Many screams were heard, all vampires, werewolves, and a witch burned in the barn.
"I have to help her," Alaric yelled, but Damon continued to hold him until the last scream stopped and you put out the fire.
Exhausted and weak, you fell to the ground.

You hadn't used your powers in a long time, and certainly not to this extent.
You could still feel how someone took it up and carried you away.
“I will not let you die, no matter what you are or what you think you are, I know you are not a monster and I will not let you die. I love you, I always have and I always will. I even toyed with the idea of leaving Isobel, but you convinced me otherwise, ironically or not? But when she died I had to look into the matter, I would have let you know, told you everything, but I didn't want to put you in danger. also very ironically. I just wanted to protect you. ”Alaric said, while he wiped individual strands from your face.
You had been unconscious for a few hours now and were lying on the sofa on which you had discussed your plan a day ago.
Alaric sat next to you and did not move from your side.
It took almost a day until you came to, the first thing you sat was Alaric, tears of joy rolled down his face and before you could say anything, he gave you a careful, light kiss on the lips.
"Never do something like that again," he said in a low, cracked voice.
"I do not promise anything," you replied with a small smile.
