Chapter 1: In which Urbosa is a Disaster Lesbian™ and Zelda still has a mother

Chapter Text

The whole of Gerudo Town buzzed with news of the Hyrule queen’s arrival. Urbosa maintained her calm composure, but in truth, she was just as excited as the rest of them. It had been too long since she had caught up with Queen Zelda the Seventh.

(But most people just call her Elane.)

Urbosa couldn’t even recall the last time they had met, just the two of them… However, she couldn’t help the butterflies in her stomach, and not the good kind. It wasn’t often she and her unrequited crush Queen Elane had meetings, and the queen said it was urgent. Had something terrible happened? Surely not. Otherwise, she would have known. But no matter. The only important thing was that her dearest friend was visiting, and Gerudo Town needed a severe cleaning.

By the time the town was spic and span, one of the guards announced Elane’s arrival. When Urbosa went out to meet her, she noticed the queen carried a small bundle. Urbosa furrowed her brow.

“Vasaaq, Your Majesty! It’s so good to see you again! May I ask what you are holding?”

“Come and see for yourself.”

Urbosa peered down. Upon closer inspection, the bundle snored. She looked up at Elane with shock.

“Surprise! Hylia has blessed us with a healthy and happy baby girl! I wanted to come over sooner, but Rhoam insisted I rest before making such a hazardous journey,” she joked.

“Well, what are we just standing around here for? Please, come in!”

The two queens entered Urbosa’s palace still conversing.

“What did you decide to name her?”

“Well, after long consideration, I decided to give her the name–”

“Zelda,” they both deadpanned simultaneously. They laughed, which woke up the baby. She wailed in the queen’s arms.

“Shhh, little bird, it’s alright. You’re safe,” cooed the queen as she rocked baby Zelda in her arms. The princess seemed to calm down slightly and sniffed.

“Little bird?”

“It’s just a term of endearment I came up with.”

Urbosa smiled fondly and reached out to gently hold the princess’ hand. Zelda grabbed Urbosa’s pinky and stared up at her with curiosity.

“She’s beautiful,” she commented. Elane hummed her response.

“I am sure she will grow up to be as dignified and beautiful as you… though no one can compare to your beauty,” Urbosa added.

(What do you mean this sounds gay? This was merely a heterosexual compliment. You know, as gal pals do.)

The queen smiled gracefully.

“Thank you, Lady Urbosa, but looks are fleeting. I only wish for her to be truly happy. True happiness is so hard to find these days, and I can only hope that she won't have trouble finding it.”

Urbosa smiled at Zelda, who giggled with happiness. Never in her life did she ever think she could feel such love for a child that wasn’t even hers.

“I actually came here for another reason. Urbosa, will you do me the honor of being her godmother?”

Urbosa’s jaw dropped.

“I-Of course! Sarqso! I’m so honored that you chose me.”

“Well, I figured that you were the perfect choice. You’re very motherly when it comes to children, not to mention that you are my best friend in the whole world.”

“Yes… you are my… best friend, as well.”

Later that night, Urbosa opened her diary and jotted down her day.

My love–

Urbosa considered her choice of words and scratched it out.

–dear friend from afar came to visit Gerudo Town today. It is always a pleasure to see the queen of Hyrule. She described her reason for coming as urgent. I was worried, but she only wished for me to meet her newborn child. Her sweet daughter's name is Zelda. She has her mother's smile. I cannot help but cherish her already. I told her that Zelda is sure to grow up into a dignified and beautiful queen, just like her mother. My friend thanked me but said she instead wishes for Zelda to be blessed with true happiness. She also appointed me as her godmother. I was overjoyed with the prospect of showering the princess with love. The way the queen gazes upon her daughter (her little bird, as she calls her)… I have never seen such unconditional love. If only I were subject to her loving gaze…

When she called me her best friend, I felt an overwhelming urge to tell her my true feelings. But what would really have happened if I had told her? Most likely I would have lost a close friend… Our love was simply not meant to be. I suppose being Zelda’s godmother is the closest I will ever get to keeping her mother in my life. She said her only wish is for Zelda to be happy. Therefore, her wish will be mine as well. Dear Zelda, I pray to Hylia above that you will know happiness and only happiness.
