Form RV-3-X-2D

Summary:

An incident at the TVA changes things up a little.

(For the Day 4 prompt: "Fine, I give up.")

Work Text:

"Uh-huh," Mobius said. Cradling the phone awkwardly against his shoulder, he frowned and pulled up both the incident report and the maintenance work order on his computer. "Right… Okay, I get that, but— … Uh-huh… Yeah… I mean I guess, yeah, but there's really no—? … Uh-huh. Uh-huh. No, I know, but… Yeah, sure," he finally said with a sigh, shooing Loki away from trying to peer at the screen over his shoulder. "No it's fine, I can manage it. Yeah. Yeah, it's fine. Okay, thanks."

Mobius hung up, Loki nearly vibrating beside him with curiosity. While studiously pretending to be utterly disinterested in the whole conversation, of course.

"C'mon," Mobius said, shutting down and climbing to his feet, "we're done for the day anyway."

"So what was all that about?" Loki finally asked, very nonchalantly, as they stepped into the elevator a few minutes later.

Mobius sighed. "Well, first someone misfiled the third copy of Form RV-3-X-2D for—"

"Okay, boring," Loki interrupted, rolling his eyes dramatically. "Please, don't tell me. In fact, just forget I asked. I already wish I hadn't. There's really nothing interesting that ever happens around here, is there? It's a bloody wonder you don't all go completely mad. No, wait, I take that back. I'm pretty sure you are all completely mad, so…"

He trailed off, frowning at the elevator panel. Mobius hid a smirk. He'd been wondering how long it would take Loki to notice.

"Mobius, you've hit the wrong floor."

"No, I haven't," Mobius said mildly.

The doors pinged open a moment later and Loki peered out suspiciously. "Aren't you taking me back to my dreary, bare little cell for the night?"

"You have three fully-furnished rooms, it's hardly a bare cell. And no, I'm not."

"Where, then?" Loki asked, hurrying to catch up as Mobius headed down the corridor. "We're not back to those killing me kind of rooms, are we? Because honestly, I really do think we've moved past all that by this point. We've got a good rapport developing here, you and I. Be a shame to ruin that now, wouldn't it?"

"That was never a killing you kind of room, Loki. I told you that. Seven times."

"Have you got another horrible little cafeteria hidden away down here that you haven't brought me to yet? Or— oh!" Loki continued before Mobius even had a chance to answer. "It's the Space Lizards, isn't it? You're finally taking me to meet the mysteriously secretive and terribly busy Time-Keepers!"

Mobius snorted a laugh at that, gesturing for Loki to get into the shuttle cab. "Yeah, keep dreamin'."

Loki gave the vehicle's interior a doubtful look— one which clearly said he'd inspected it and found it entirely wanting, but had magnanimously decided not to make a fuss about it— and got in. Mobius clambered in after him, set the address, and settled in with his eyes shut, hoping for a bit of peace and quiet.

"Fine, I give up," Loki huffed after all of about three seconds. "Where are we going, then?"

Mobius cracked an eye open. Loki was watching through the window while they soared out into the skyways, and seemed to not only have gotten past his disdain for the cab's upholstery, but he’d also forgotten to mask his curious interest under a veneer of boredom.

The expression was still way more endearing on him than it had any right be.

"Well, like I was trying to explain earlier," Mobius started, "someone misfiled—"

"Some ridiculous form or other, yes, yes. What does that have to do with anything at all?"

Mobius shot Loki a level look, which Loki took absolutely no notice of.

Mobius sighed. "Your whole wing is closed down 'til maintenance is done with it."

"So that means we're going… where, exactly?" Loki asked. A mischievous, knowing smirk was starting to spread slowly over his face.

"You're gonna be staying at my place for a few days," Mobius said. He was already regretting saying he could manage it. "On the couch," he added pointedly; and then immediately regretted that, too.

Across from him, Loki made a noncommittal, pleased little humming sound, and Mobius deliberately shut his eyes again, hoping he was managing to look as indifferent as he was trying to.

He was pretty sure he was not, actually, managing it at all.

It was gonna be a long few days.
