Summary
Ryuji suddenly starts to act strange, slowly distancing himself from his friends. Akira seems to be hiding something, but tries to avoid the subject whenever it comes up.
Unable to get an explanation from either of them, Yuuki does what he can to understand the reason behind those changes—and possibly help his two closest friends.

Something covered half of Yuuki’s face, and he instinctively brought his hands to it.
Then, don’t forget this feeling… As long as you’re willing to fight against the odds, my strength is yours to take. Soar high, young dragon, and don’t disappoint me.

Summary:
Ryuji suddenly starts to act strange, slowly distancing himself from his friends. “Ah… Sure, I forgot.” Yuuki tried to think of something else, not wanting to miss his chance. “Are you free tomorrow, then?”
“Not really…” Ryuji averted his gaze, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. “Akira and Ann are probably free, though. You should ask them instead.”
The suggestion frustrated Yuuki. “But I want to spend time with you!”
“Why?”
Yuuki widened his eyes. The question was a little jarring, especially after the many times they spent time together for no reason at all. “What do you mean why?”
“Nothing!” Ryuji added, offering him a pat on the shoulder and a slight smile. “I’ll talk to you later, then.”

The shadow simply looked at him for a long while. Then, a warm smile took its lips. “You’re always the first one to reach out to me, ain’t you?” It reached for Yuuki’s face, lightly touching his cheek. “Whenever I need it the most, you’re always here.”Even if that was just a shadow, its touch carried so much tenderness that Yuuki could feel his heart melting. He reached for its hand, holding it against his face. “I told you… It’s because you’re important to me.”
The shadow laughed to itself. “I wonder what I did to deserve something like this.”
“More than you think,” said Yuuki. “Someday, I’ll make you understand just how much.”
“When you say it like that, I can’t help but believe you.”
Yuuki met its gaze, returning that smile. Shadow Ryuji sighed, closing its eye.
“You better go now…” it said. “It’s pretty quiet now, but this place can still be dangerous.”
“Will you be alone here if I leave?”
“Yeah. But I’m just a shadow… I’ll be fine.” Its expression darkened. “But the other me… He’s kinda scarin’ me, so… Don’t leave him alone, okay?”
“I won’t.”
“Thanks.” Shadow Ryuji looked him in the eyes before whispering: “And you better not come back here. If you do, I could steal you too, and put you at the top of my treasure pile.”
Something in the way he said that made Yuuki’s face and neck suddenly burn. The shadow laughed, amused.
“T’was just a joke.” It gently patted Yuuki’s head. “Go home now, and don’t come here again. Bad things could happen if you do.”
It said that in a playful tone, but there was a hint of sadness behind it.
“I’ll take care of you,” said Yuuki. “The other you, I mean… I’ll make sure he’s fine.”
“I know you will.” Shadow Ryuji leaned forward, placing a brief kiss on Yuuki’s forehead. “Now, go.”
Yuuki did as it said, but he couldn’t get rid of the feeling that he was leaving Ryuji—the real Ryuji—behind.

“Yeah,” agreed Futaba. “I once caught him trying to high-five the air after a battle… He got so sad when he remembered you weren’t there.”“And then he sulked for the rest of the day,” added Morgana.
Akira seemed to shrink with every word. “Why are you saying all that…?”
“Probably because you won’t say it yourself,” said Ann.
Ryuji laughed, looking at Akira. “Aw, Aki… I had no idea.”
“Don’t say that…” Akira puffed his cheeks. “It’s all true, but I’m embarrassed now.”
Ryuji playfully ruffled his hair, making Akira laugh.
“There they are…” said Ann. “I can’t believe I’m almost getting emotional because of these idiots.”
