Sonic sat at his kitchen table, sipped his coffee while staring out the back window. Watching the breeze dancing along the various shades of yellows, browns and reds in the trees. Fall had always been his favorite season.
He especially loved seeing his husband working on one of his various projects in the backyard. Whether is was tuning up his motorcycle or repairing the roof of the shed that held various outdoor furniture stored away for Summer and their occasional yard camping evenings.
Today seemed like it was gonna be such a day.
It had been about half a decade since he decided to settle down with Shadow. Having spent a big part of their lives on adventures across the world.
Sonic’s daydreaming was interrupted by a set of arms wrapping their way across his shoulders. Shadow had noticed him staring dreamily and decided to come inside.
“What were you dreaming about darling?” Shadow asked as Sonic nuzzled against his bicep.
“Just reminiscing about our adventures.” Sonic sighed, a soft purr coming from his throat as Shadow placed a kiss on his cheek.
“Those were good times, but this…” Shadow paused to look around the room “This is so much better. Spending time with my favorite person in our little space. I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.”
Sonic was about to say something when suddenly there was a thump upstairs, followed by rapid patter of feet on the stairs. A second later a little hedgehog came skidding into the room, holding a crayon drawing of what looked like Sonic and Shadow in a battle. “Look what I made. It’s you and dad beating a big bad robot.” The small navy colored hedgehog cheered loudly before running over to hug Shadow’s Leg.
“That looks just like us beating Eggman’s evil robots, that’s great lil guy.” Sonic said admiring the drawing.
“Yeah, I saw you and dad on the TV Yesterday, Then I drew it… I hope you like it.” The little hedgehog said with a big grin.
“We love it.” Shadow said as he lifted the kid onto his arm “I finally got your swing set built buddy, Wanna go test it out?” Shadow said excitedly.
Sonic couldn’t hold back his smile hearing his son cheer loudly as Shadow carried him outside to play. Watching as Shadow strapped him into the seat and began swinging the hoglet back and forth.
Sonic’s smile grew even more hearing the happy giggles coming from the two hedgehogs outside. He finished his coffee before heading outside himself.
“You having fun kiddo?” Sonic chuckled which was quickly answered with a cheerful “Yes.” coming from the dark blue hoglet. Sonic sat down on the second seat, admiring Shadow mirroring their son’s bright smile. A sight Sonic never got bored of seeing as since they had their little boy. That smile rarely seemed to fade from Shadow’s face.
The day flew by. Swinging for hours, before a few rounds of Tag and building sand castles in the sandbox together. Before they knew it the sun was starting to go down, Shadow had lit the firepit and Sonic had set up a few folding chairs.
The back door swung open as their son came running out with his arms full of Snacks, a bag of marshmallows and some chocolate bars, giggling happily he ran towards the edge of the deck.
Oblivious to his surroundings the little hoglet ran and missed the step down. Sonic sped forward and caught the tyke before he even noticed that he almost fell.
“You okay Sam?” Sonic asked setting the kid down.
“I think so.” Little Sam said confused, checking himself over.
“You almost fell off buddy, take it easy next time okay.” Sonic said cautiously.
“Okay Daddy.” Sam said happily before running towards Shadow “I got the snacks!” He yelled proudly
“You sure did bud, you scared us for a moment there.” Shadow chuckled ruffling Sam’s quills before sitting down.
“Sorry dad.” He said quietly.
“It’s okay, c’mon let’s make s’mores.” Shadow said placing Sam on his lap.
After a while the sun had set, Sam had fallen asleep on Shadow’s chest. It left the two hedgehogs to sit together in silence. Watching the embers of the fire rise along with the heat of the flames.
Sonic sighed contently looking over at Shadow who was softly petting a fast asleep Sam with one hand, Holding Sonic’s hand with the other.
Shadow got up slowly as he braced Sam against his chest. “I’m gonna put him to bed, can you put out the fire?” Shadow asked kissing Sonic on his ear
“Sure, I’ll do that and come up as well.” Sonic replied getting out of his seat to grab the fire poker.
“Thanks Darling, I love you.” Shadow said quietly as he walked towards the house.
“Love you too.” Sonic replied putting out the fire.
Today was a great day. Family time was something Sonic would cherish every minute of.
