It all started because of fidget spinners.
Zuko remembers the day clearly—he was walking down the halls with Sokka, his boyfriend, who was happily spinning his fidget spinner, as one with a fidget spinner does.
It just so happened that Zuko’s ex and current best friend, Jet, was walking in the opposite direction at the time, twirling his own fidget spinner.
Jet and Sokka had never really gotten along well; they were always tense, defensive, and quick to anger around each other. But, since they were in the same friend group and both cared deeply for Zuko, they sucked it up.
Until the fidget spinners.

Zuko, Sokka found, was different. Not in the way that everyone received comfort differently, although that too. (Zuko mostly liked to be held, as many points of contact as possible.) No, it seemed to Sokka that despite how nonsensical it was, how absurd it sounded, Zuko found the most comfort when touching him.
Or: Zuko is handsy. Sokka is conflicted.

And okay, it’s probably a dirty trick, especially when he turns on his puppy dog eyes since he knows Zuko can never say no when he starts pouting, but… He really wants Zuko to go.
“Sokka,” Zuko warns, picking up on what Sokka is doing immediately, “don’t do that. It’s not fair, you know I can’t say no when you give me puppy dog eyes. Stop it.”
“I’ll miss you if you don’t go,” he pouts extra hard.
They stare each other down for a long minute, Sokka doing his best to look sad and convincing while Zuko glares at him with his arms crossed over his chest.
“Sometimes I really hate that this works on me, you know that?” Zuko sighs finally, dropping his arms. “But fine. I’ll go with you guys.”
