Chapter 1: 1
Chapter Text
Beca didn’t know what to make of this thing they called the ‘college experience.’ She’s been on campus a grand total of two months (two months longer than she ever cared to be). To say her time had been eventful, that doesn’t even begin to describe the roller coaster ride that her life had become.
A man who likes to refer to himself her father, prefers to drop by unannounced, continually berates her life choices, up to this point. And the old geezer demanded she join a club! Citing that damn ‘college experience’ as his motivation for suggesting it.
And what did that get her…well, plenty. She had the fun of being called a ‘bitch” by some blonde stick-up-her-ass cult leader. Joined said cult. And then there’s the matter of the drop-dead gorgeous, boundary challenged, body of a goddess (yeah, she peaked) redhead who likes forcing others to sing in the shower with her! To her ‘lady jam’, no less!
Chloe Beale. The totally annoying, and all together unforgettable, Chloe Beale.
The enigma that was Chloe did not end with the Activity Fair meeting. It continued to the shower, daily at Bella’s practice, and recently at an on-campus coffee shop. The older woman had become a force in Beca’s life, her ‘college experience'. She showed no signs of slowing down in her drive to learn everything she could about the edgy badass Beca presented herself as.
“Hey, Beca, want to grab a coffee?” Chloe said as she walked up behind Beca and linked arms with the DJ.
This is also new to Beca. All this touching. The younger woman was not used to Chloe’s full-on personality. But she isn’t running from it. She’s drawn to the redhead.
“You gonna get me a chocolate chip cookie too, Red?”
“Don’t I always take care of you, Becs?” Chloe said while picking up her bag.
“Well…so far, I guess” the brunette replied. A hint of a smirk directed at the Bella co-captain.
“Take that back! You know I get you what you want, Mitchell” the younger woman appearing a bit panicked when Chloe added a wink.
Taking pity on the freshman, Chloe laughed and guided her toward the door. “Relax, Becs. You are just too cute.”
“Not cute, I’m bad..”
“Ass. Yeah, you keep telling me that” the Senior was enjoying the frazzled state she had Beca in. “Now come on, my adorable badass. The sooner we’re done with our coffee, the sooner you can help me study for my Russian Lit class.”
Finding their table available, the pair sat down and waited for the coffee (and cookies) to arrive. Chloe, as she usually did, sat as close to Beca as the DJ would allow.
“You were aca-awesome today, Bec. You’re really getting the choreography down.”
“Yeah, yeah. Synchronized lady dancing has always been one of life goals” the brunette now sporting an easily recognized smirk.
Beca giggled as the older woman gave her a lighthearted shove.
“You’re well on your way, then. But that offer for private lessons stands.”
“Before I forget, you’re going to the Halloween bash at the Treble House, right?”
The look of surprise on Beca’s face told Chloe she had failed to look at the activities calendar Aubrey handed out weeks ago.
“What Halloween bash are you talkin about, Chlo? And who are you calling?”
“I’m calling my co-captain to inform her that Beca Mitchell has failed to fulfill her duties as a Bella Lady” the redhead’s look of annoyance carrying no real heat.
Beca reached out toward Chloe’s phone “put that thing down. Now, please tell me exactly how I’ve failed in my duties as a Bella Lady.” The DJ said, still not comfortable referring to herself as a Bella Lady.
“Well, the Activities Calendar, which was provided to you over a month ago, clearly noted that Saturday night, October 31st, each Bella need attend a mandatory Bonding Activity – aka the Halloween Bash at the Treble House. And I know you received this Calendar, as I clearly saw you wearing your most adorable badass smirk when you looked it over.” Chloe taking way too much pleasure in the brunette’s current state of distress.
“And I wanted to ask you if you’d go with me?” The redhead’s customary confidence is not present for the moment.
“Aren’t we all going? Why are you asking me to go with you?” Beca realizing Chloe might actually be asking her to be the older woman’s date to this party.
“We are all going. It’s just, I thought, well…we might go as a couple. You know, kind of a…date.” A tiny smile formed on Chloe’s face as she thought she saw the same on the DJ.
“Oh…I see. Um…I guess…why not. Sure. Ok. We can do that.” Beca hoping the ground would open and swallow her this very second.
‘Come on, Beca, quit acting like a 12-year-old who just got asked to school dance’ the brunette thought to herself.
The color somewhat fading from her cheeks, the senior saw the opportunity to have a little fun with Beca.
“Wow, don’t get too excited there, Mitchell! Way to make a girl feel special. Maybe you can bring just a little more enthusiasm to the date that night, huh!”
“Shut up, Red. It’s not like that. You just caught me a little off guard there.
And just what exactly are you grinning about?!”
“I’m just not accustomed to seeing a badass get all flustered like that.” Chloe’s smile revealed the enjoyment she was taking in the brunette’s awkwardness.
“Yeah, yeah. Think what you want, Beale. I am not flustered.”
“ Wait, are we going to have to wear matching costumes or something like that? I’m definitely going to have the right of refusal for any costume choice. And don’t you dare think you’re getting me to wear anything pink!”
“Ok, noted. But that won’t be a problem. You’ll be accompanying the Barden Belle to the Bash” Chloe said, almost bouncing in her seat at this point.
“I know I’m going with a Bella. Wait, I am not wearing that antiquated flight attendant outfit any more than I must. Nope.”
“Not a Bella, Bec, the Barden Belle. B-E-L-L-…”
“I know how to spell, Red. Who, or what, is the Barden Belle?”
“Beca, you seriously haven’t heard of the Barden Belle? Come on, someone had to have told you by now. Usually that tale is given to Freshmen along with their rape whistle.”
“Nope. Not a word. Well, maybe someone did tell me at some point, and I just blocked it out. There’s been a fair amount of that happening since I got here” the DJ offered, along with an exasperated eye-roll.
“Great. Then you get to do some research. I’ll let you find out on your own who the Barden Belle is. Then we can plan something sexy for you to wear. I mean, you want to look good when you’re with the Barden Belle.” Chloe flashing her best wink for Beca.
“Ok then. It will be a welcome distraction from the Philosophy homework I need to have done by Friday. And wipe that smirk off your face, Chlo. Makes you look like a serial killer.”
‘By far the most gorgeous serial killer I’ve ever seen’ Beca thought.
The pair stepped outside the diner, having had such a good time that Chloe was unable to contain her excitement.
“I have to work with Aubrey on some Bella planning. You want to come over later and study? Give you a chance to complete your research about the Barden Belle.”
“I have had my fill of the General for today, can you make sure she’s not in full Captain mode?” Beca surprised at her own words. This was new for the Freshman. Wanting to spend time with someone.
“Totes. Be there by seven, k?”
“Yeah, Awes. And don’t look at me like that, Red. You’ll never hear me use that term ever again” Beca wondering what was this redhead turning her into?
“Aww, you do like me” cooed the older woman, saying goodbye with a hug and a peck on the cheek.
“Yeah, yeah. You have any of the energy drinks I like?”
“Anything for you, Becs. See you at seven.”
Beca returned to her dorm. She was relieved her roommate was nowhere in sight. Kimmy Jin wasn’t the most obnoxious roommate she could have picked out, but damn, were constant looks of disapproval really necessary? Anyway, with the room to herself, Beca felt the urge to work on some mixes she had been kicking around in her head. Several ideas which had come from the woman she now had a date with to this Halloween Bash. Chloe always had something to offer in the way of mashups. And, she had become increasingly difficult for the DJ to say no to.
After about 30 minutes spent mixing, Beca was left with another 45 minutes before needing to leave for the study session with the redhead. ‘Let’s see if there really is anything to this Barden Belle legend Chloe had given her precious few details about.
An internet search quickly confirmed there was a tale of the infamous Barden Belle. Seems as though the legend began in the 1960s. Apparently, a beautiful female student at Barden lost her female love to a deadly disease. And, not surprisingly, the death occurred on Halloween. “Yeah, right” the brunette mumbled to herself. Distraught, the ghost of the Barden Belle, this redhead of unsurpassed beauty, would haunt the showers of the Barden University dorms each October. The ghost was said to be searching for her lost soulmate. The spirit was believed to carry with her half of a picture of the two lovers. A grainy color photo of the two women, in their fashionable sixties era hippie dresses (one green, one a black/purple flannel pattern), accompanied the article.
‘Ok, I can’t tell the color of her hair, but I guess she does kind of look like Chloe’ Beca thought.
For added suspense, many students had reported being visited by the spirit over the years. With the amount of mind-altering chemicals she’d seen or smelt since she arrived on the Barden campus, Beca could believe numerous students did believe they’d seen a ghost at some point.
Noting it was nearly time to get going, Beca closed her laptop, checked herself in the mirror, then set off for Chloe’s.
Chloe removed a bag of popcorn from the microwave and poured it into a bowl. While humming, a little louder than she intended, the redhead was off toward her room.
Looking up from her spot on the couch, Aubrey asked “Chloe, where are you going with that popcorn? And what has you in such a good mood?”
“Beca’s coming over to study with me. She loves popcorn.” The senior’s grin could hardly be contained at this point.
“Why is that hobbit coming over here to study with you? You two have different majors.” the blonde looked at the expression on her friend’s face
“Wait, I know that look. You have feelings for her, don’t you? Chloe, she’s troub-“
“She’s trouble. She has an attitude problem. She’s emotionally unavailable. Yes, Bree, you’ve said all those things before.”
“I’m just looking out for you, Chloe.” There was real concern in Aubrey’s voice.
“I know you are, Bree. However, I don’t think we can have this conversation any longer. I do like Beca, I have from the beginning. If anything, my feelings are getting stronger for her. She’s so talented, and she’s really very sweet. But you wouldn’t know these things because you’ve been on edge with her from the beginning. “ The redhead’s eyes fell and her shoulders slumped.
“Plus, I asked her to be my date to the Halloween Bash.”
“She agreed to go?” Aubrey had been convinced the Freshman would not agree to go to a costume party, even if it were with Chloe.
“She did. And I know we’re going to have the best time.”
“She tries to come off as this loner badass. But she’s not the same around me. She’s letting me in, little by little. I just know there’s something real there.”
“The hob-, I mean Beca, she knows she’ll be going as the Barden Belle’s soulmate? She knows the whole story?”
“Not yet, but she will,” Chloe offered over her shoulder as she walked to her room.
Several days later Beca found herself attempting to make a quick exit after her Philosophy class. This was the one and only class that brought her to the part of campus where she was likely to run into her father. He still harbored the pipe dream that this college experience would benefit their relationship (if it even could be called that).
Knowing her schedule better than the Freshman did, the professor was leaning against the door frame to his office as Beca kept her head down and found a spot in the middle of a group of students moving toward the exit.
“Don’t think I can’t see you, Rebecca” she visibly cringed as she heard her father’s voice getting closer.
Knowing there was no escape, Beca huffed and made her way to his office.
“Almost made it out clean. But you caught me, professor.”
“Professor, huh? You can’t even refer to your father as ‘old man’ or ‘dad’?”
“I assume you stopped me for a reason?”
“Nice to see you too, Beca. I’ve been well. Thank you for asking.”
“Look, father, I need to get to my room to get changed. Bella’s practice.” Beca was making no pretense she wasn’t in the mood for catching up, or whatever her father had in mind.
“Yes, the Bellas. How’s that going? I have several members in my classes. One of them is the captain, I believe. Posen, is it? She’s a rather…determined…person.”
“Determined! She’s determined to rip out my ‘ear monstrosities’ and send me back to wherever I came from” Beca made no attempt to hide her disdain for the blonde co-captain.
“She’s the captain, right? Wait, you mentioned there were co-captains. I’m sorry, I don’t remember the other…” Beca’s dad wanted to be polite about this.
“What are we doing here? You really want to know about the Bellas, dad?”
“Beca, you could at least acknowledge I’m trying here. You won’t call. You don’t want me stopping by your room. You won’t come over for dinner” hearing her father list these things, the brunette was suddenly feeling not so good about the way she had been treating her father.
“Ok, ok, I get it. I’ve been a real bitch when it comes to communicating with you.” Beca said.
“But yeah, Aubrey and Chloe are co-captains. Though, from what I’ve seen, Aubrey doesn’t give Chloe much of a chance to co-captain. Chloe says it really goes back to last year’s meltdown. That, and her stand-at-attention Army father.”
Beca’s father grinned and relaxed a bit. “Any performances coming up? What are you doing with your free time?”
“We have something at a retirement home before Thanksgiving.”
“Between classes, the radio station, practice, and Chloe, I don’t have time for anything else.” Beca added.
“I hope you’re not spreading yourself too thin Beca. All that sounds like it would be an incredible amount to put on a freshman."
"You've mentioned Chloe more than once, is there some extra school work or Bella’s project you’re collaborating with her on?” Beca’s father was actually concerned about how she was adapting.
“No, nothing extra, we just enjoy spending time together. We both love music, and she likes to listen to the mixes I make. I guess I’m a good sounding board for her to relieve some of the pressure she’s under due to Posen.”
“Hold on there, Beca. Is that an actual smile I’m seeing? Wow, it is. Wait until Sheila hears about this. Is Chloe the reason for that smirk?”
“Come on, you can tell your old man.”
Don’t push your luck, dad. But yeah, Chloe’s…nice. She gets me, supports me. And I do the same for her.” This was a great understatement of her feelings for the redhead, but her father didn’t need to know that.
“We’re actually going to this Halloween party together.”
“What’s that smile mean, dad? You’re kinda creeping me out.” Beca questioned.
“Oh, I’ve heard about the Halloween Bash. Its history is quite infamous around campus. Please don’t let me get a call asking for bail money that night. Beca.”
“Come on, give me some credit. It’s not like we’re going to be trashing the Treble house and smashing their windows. Of course I don’t know what Amy or Liliy’s planes are. And there's always Stacie...”
“If I remember correctly, that’s a costume party. I’m more than a little surprised to hear you’re attending a costume party, Beca. Chloe must be very persuasive. Does she have some kind of…power over you the rest of us don't?” It then became evident where Beca got her smartass smirk from.
“This has been fun. Are we done here?” Beca started to stand up.
“Sit down, please. I apologize. In all seriousness, what are you two going as?”
Leary of sharing this information, Beca decided it couldn’t hurt “Well, I assume you’re familiar with the Barden Belle and her ‘soulmate’?” ‘OMG, when did I start using air quotes so much!’ Beca thought to herself.
“Yes, very. It’s quite the Urban Legend around here. Are you familiar with the tale?” Her father said.
“Somewhat, yeah. Just what I was able to find out from an internet search.”
Fighting with herself not to do so, Beca jumped in and asked “You sound like you know about it. What can you tell me about this legend?”
“Look at us, conversing like two regular people who-“
“Ok, strike two, dad. One more and I’m out of here. You want to tell me, or not?”
“Yes, of course. I’m going to assume you know the main points. The spirit is that of a redheaded woman looking to reconnect with her soulmate. One of the lesser-known facts is that she carries a photograph, torn in half, with her. The missing half is the photo of her soulmate.”
Beca. I guess the look on your face means that is something you weren’t aware of?" Her dad recognizing that look on his daughter’s face.
"I might have read that. I don’t remember. Interesting. Anything else?” the brunette leaned forward.
“Well, it’s not widely known that this year is a significant one. This is the 50-year anniversary of the Barden Belle losing her soulmate. Word is that if the Belle doesn’t find her soulmate this year, then she will pass on to the other side. She will go broken hearted, having never reconnected with her soulmate. But, if she does find her long, lost soulmate, who then confesses she still loves the Belle. Then the two will be reunited and the Belle will stay here to be with her soulmate forever.”
“Beca?” the young woman seemed lost in her thoughts. “Rebecca?” her father said, raising his voice a touch.
“Yeah? Hmm...really? I wasn’t aware of that part” Beca replied, seeming to be a little disoriented.
“Where did you go to, Beca? You most definitely looked a little ‘checked out’ for a minute or two.”
“Why isn’t that last part more widely known? How do you know about it?” Beca was curious.
“I only know about it from one of the professors here in the English Department, Professor Beltran. She’s researched the legend for as long as I’ve been here. She is really the foremost expert I’m aware of. She’s only shared some of those details with people she trusts. She very much believes in the legend and respects it.”
Beca stood, grabbing her backpack. “Is there a picture of this soulmate?”
“What, you think Chloe is the Barden Belle? And you’re her long, lost soulmate?”
“No, dad, I don’t think that. You know I don’t believe in soulmates.”
‘I don’t, do I?’ the brunette pondered.
“Sorry. I’m just playing around, Beca. I believe there is a picture of her soulmate, but I've never seen it. At least Professor Beltran has never shared it with me. The legend does have it that the soulmate is a brunette, but that doesn’t do a whole lot to narrow things down. She has said that many people have brought forward pictures and claimed to be the soulmate. None have been substantiated.”
Beca took a step towards the door. “As fascinating as this is, I told Chloe I’d meet her before practice for coffee. I guess I’ll see you around, dad.”
“You know Sheila would love to have you over for dinner. It has been made clear to me I need to extend the invitation to you, again, Beca. So, what do you say? Could you make some time?”
This was met with a strong eye-roll from Beca.
“I’ll see what I can do. Ok. Maybe I can make it one night after Halloween. That is, if I don’t get pulled away to the other side by the Barden Belle.”
“Fair enough. We’d really like that. Bring Chloe with you too. Since you’re soulmates and all.” Her father grinning as Beca walked away.

Chapter Text
“Titanium” disrupts Beca’s Saturday morning sleep-in at a little after 9AM. At this hour, normally that would garner a ‘fuck off’ from the DJ. Knowing that it’s Chloe’s ringtone, she does her best to sound somewhat coherent and chipper (as chipper as she could be this early).
“Kinda busy, Red. I was just getting ready to start on some extra cardio.” Beca's sarcasm dripped through the phone.
“Wow, Becs, I didn’t know rolling over in bed was considered cardio . I need to go for a run myself, I can be there in like 20 minutes.”
“Yeah, I guess we both know that’s a bunch of crap. What’s up, Chlo?”
“We need to get your costume for the Halloween Bash, Beca. It’s only a week away!” The redhead wasn’t even trying to hide her excitement.
“Costumes, Chlo? We’re wearing dresses . That hardly qualifies as costumes. Anyway, I have a dress.”
“Becs, I’ve been in your closet. You need a new dress. Now get your cute butt out of bed, showered, dressed, and over to my place in the next hour. Or else I’ll come over there and do it for you. We’ve shared a shower before, so you know I’ll do it. Oh, and bring that blue dress you have with you when you come over.”
“Calm down, Beale. No shower hijacking needed today. Wait, why do I need to bring a dress if we’re going out to buy another?!”
“You’ll see, just bring it, ok?”
“Whatever. Be there in an hour.”
“Aww, Becs, you softie. You totes love me.” Chloe had the brunette right where she wanted her, and she was loving it.
“You’re lucky you’re pretty, Chlo. Now get off my phone, please.”
Four hours later Chloe Beale was overjoyed. She stands next to Beca as the DJ is paying for the dress they had managed to find. Managed is exactly accurate (Chloe had done some pre-scouting). And the dress was absolutely perfect for the occasion. The fact that Beca Mitchell looked way hot in it was a bonus not lost on Chloe. It was a fitted black and purple plaid pattern with a flair skirt from Smak Parlour. The cape that accompanied the garment made Chloe think about things she shouldn’t be thinking. She made no apologies for her attraction to the brunette. An attraction that had been present since the very first time she had her breath taken from her. The day the Freshman approached the Bella booth during the Activities Fair. The dress Beca was paying for not only was perfect for the time period (1960s), it also nicely ticked several other boxes the redhead needed it to. Beca liked it. She was drop dead gorgeous in it. And oh yeah, it afforded Chloe with a front row view to the brunette’s perfect little ass (she quietly hoped to hold it with one hand someday). All of that came together in the perfect fit. Even when Beca was trying it on, Chloe saw what she had seen from day one – a quiet confidence and swagger that made the Senior’s insides do all kinds of flips and turns whenever she saw, or even thought about, Beca Mitchell. Yeah, the dress covered up the DJs heat-inducing cleavage, but Chloe was willing to make that sacrifice for the occasion.
“Chlo? Hello, Chloe!” she heard Beca’s voice. “You still with me, Beale?” The DJ is now waving her hands in an exaggerated manner.
“Yeah. Of course…you ready to go?” Chloe just prayed Beca wouldn’t make a big deal out of catching her in a checked-out state.
“No, I’m not. That’s why I’ve been trying to get your attention for the last 5 minutes.”
“Sure you have. Anyway, what’s wrong?”
“Not that I care to do any more shopping. But what about shoes?”
Oh, those black strappy heels you have will look aca-awesome with that dress. You’ll be the hottest spirit at the party.” Chloe’s megawatt smile clearly causing more than a little color to fill Beca’s face.
“You’re so weird, Red.”
“I got this Beca. My treat.” Chloe said, letting Beca know she would pay for their lunches. “You did manage to keep the complaining to a minimum today, and had to lay out $75 dollars on a dress. It’s the least I can do to say thank you.”
‘Shut up. You don’t have to bribe me. Besides, hanging out with you isn’t the worst way to spend a Saturday.” Beca smiled.
“Wipe that smirk off your face, Becs. You just don’t want to admit aloud how aca-awesome I am.”
“And we are going to be the hottest couple at the Bash!” Chloe added with a little wink.
“If you say so, Chlo. Just how are people going to know who we are, anyway?”
“I’ve been wondering when you were going to ask that. Some of the Freshmen might not know. But most everyone else knows about the Barden Belle, the haunting of showers, and the search for her soulmate. Plus, we’ll have the torn photo with us.” the redhead said.
“And just what torn photo are we going to be carrying, Chlo?”
“Sometimes I wonder how you find your way home, Becs –“ Chloe did her best to look annoyed.
The brunette’s playful shove blocked by the giggling older woman “Stop it! I told you what we were taking that pic for earlier. That’s why I had you put on your blue dress, duh.”
“Why do I hang out with you? Really, enlighten me, please.” Chloe’s breath hitched when she saw that adorable smirk directed at her once again.
“Cause you’re crazy about me, right?” Chloe said. Beca knew she was in deep when that statement was accompanied by yet another flirtatious wink.
“Yeah, you’re all right. But the Belle’s soulmate isn’t wearing a blue dress in the photo. She’s wearing a…”
“You played me, Beale! How rude. How very rude!” Beca blurted out.
Chloe’s grin was surely hurting her face at this point, “Yeah, she’s wearing a black/purple flannel pattern dress. Just –“
“Like the one I bought a little while ago. You bitch, you!” Beca’s ear to ear smile showing there was no malice behind those words.
“Chlo, why didn’t we wait to take our picture?” the DJ asked.
“Don’t worry about that. It’ll all work out, Becs.” Chloe said.
“Hey, Chlo…you go through this every year?”
“Nah, this is the first time.” the redhead said, avoiding direct eye contact with Beca.
“But why? Why now? I mean it would have been a perfect set up for you every year.” Beca wasn’t certain she wanted that question answered.
“Never seemed like the right time, Becs. Now it does.” Chloe anxiously awaited the DJ’s response.
“Hmmm…well, I get that.” And there was that quiet confidence Chloe Beale was drawn to.
On their way back to Chloe’s car, the redhead decided she couldn’t wait any longer. The Senior felt, with how well the day had gone to that point, the time was right. With that, she slipped her hand into Beca’s and laced their fingers together.
The brunette’s body, and particularly her face, instantly became a furnace. Heat spread throughout. Was this real? Chloe Beale was far and away the most beautiful, perfect, sexy woman the younger woman had ever met! My god this felt good.
Then the brunette checked out. It was no more than a second or two, but still very noticeable. She had a powerful, yet strange image flash through her mind. She saw herself in the dress she had purchased less than an hour ago! One hand holding a guitar, the other reaching for Chloe. But she couldn’t reach the redhead.
“You ok there, Becs? Where’d you go?”
Now concerned the brunette was uncomfortable holding hands, Chloe started to remove hers from Beca.
“What are you doing, Beale.” Beca grasping Chloe’s soft, smooth hand just a little tighter.
“I thought maybe I’d jumped the gun. That you weren’t comfortable with…this.” The senior pointedly looked at their hands.
“Not at all, I kinda like it.” Both women were visibly relaxed as they walked.
“I’m sorry about that, I remembered something back there that my dad said to me the other day. I just got in my head for a second.” It was a lie, but Beca wasn’t prepared to share her vision with Chloe…yet.
“Oh, okay. You want to tell me what it was?” Chloe asked.
“Sure. I guess. He said Sheila and he were hoping I’d come over for dinner sometime after Halloween.”
“That’s it? A dinner invitation?” Chloe thought it odd that would have distracted Beca as it did.
“No, he said I should bring you with me.” Pausing for a moment, before continuing “So, what do you think? I wouldn’t normally subject you to those two, but who knows. Might not be the worst thing ever. I mean, don’t feel obligated, I just – “
“Becs, stop, I’d love to go with you.” And there it was, that sheepish grin that made the DJ weak in the knees.
‘What is happening here?’ the brunette wondered. This is not me. When did I start feeling...these...things? Things she couldn’t readily identify.
Later that night, Beca returned to her dorm room. She’d had a wonderful day with Chloe. Wonderful might not be the most accurate way to describe it. In reality, she was experiencing a mild melt down . She’d spent many years perfecting ways to keep others at a distance. Don’t let them get too close, they can’t hurt you. And for the most part, that approach had served her well. Not so much served her well, but it had been effective. Effective at leaving her feeling lonely. Then comes this bouncy, gorgeous, sexy, breathtakingly beautiful redhead and the practice of keeping others at a distance blown to hell! If that wasn’t enough, there was the little matter that Beca now found herself asking if it was possible she was a ghostly spirit looking for her soulmate. No, wait, there’s more. If she didn’t find her soulmate by next Saturday night then she was going to leave this physical existence forever.
‘What the hell is happening to me?’ she muttered, barely above a whisper.
Kimmy Jin stood abruptly. “You’ve been huffing, pacing, and mumbling to yourself since you got back. It’s a real inconvenience, Beca.” And with that, she was gone.
“Good day to you, too. I’m fine, BTW. Thanks for asking” the DJ said to no one.
“Talking to yourself, real good, Beca!”
The young woman was in a very conflicted mindset. She didn’t believe in “visions,” “spirits,” or “soulmates”. Or so she thought. But the ‘vision’ she’d had when Chloe held her hand. It was brief, yet very real. Everything between her and Chloe seemed very real . Beca was searching for answers, and they were needed sooner rather than later.
“What the fuck! How did I end up here!” The DJ had denigrated from talking to herself, to now shouting at herself.
“I don’t know. But if you don’t lower your voice, the whole dorm is going to know your business!” came a voice from outside Beca’s dorm. “Now let me in, B.”
Beca knew Stacie’s voice instantly. And very cautiously opened her door.
“Hey, Stace. What are you doing?” Beca barely finished the question before her fellow Bella’s breasts nearly cut off her oxygen supply.
“Let go of me, you Amazon woman!”
“In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a race of warlike women noted for their riding skills, courage, and pride. Thanks, B." Stacie said, looking quite proud of herself.
“What are you doing here, anyway. Don’t you have a study group tonight?” Beca asked, returning to her mixing equipment.
“True, Organic Chemistry. But they’re going over Isomers and Stereochemistry. Know that as well I do the Adam and Eve Catalog. Of which I have the current issue with me, if you’re interested in…” the leggy brunette looking at Beca with eyebrow raised.
“No. Don’t finish that sentence. I’m good, Stace.” Beca said.
“You mean you and red already are already workin it out! You’ve been holding out –“
“Stacie! Stop! Put the Hunter in park if you can, please. No, Chloe and I have not been ‘working’ anything, ok.” Beca thinking to herself ‘when the hell did I become the queen of air quotes?! I’ve got to stop doing that.’
“But, I guess it’s good you’re here. There have been some things happening that I just need to talk to someone about.”
“Anything, B. You know that. Everything ok?” Stacie resting a hand on Beca’s back for comfort.
“Umm…yeah…and no. Fuck, I don’t even know where to begin.” The DJ now resting her head in her hands.
“Hey, no worries, take your time, Beca. You two went shopping today for a costume, right?” Stacie said.
“Stace, how do you know about that already? I know I haven’t told anyone.”
“Come on, B. What’s the fastest way for news to spread? The internet, the telephone, and mention it to a Bella! Besides, Aubrey said that’s where you two were earlier today.”
“So, continue, you bought a dress?” Stacie said.
“We did. Guess which one she helped me pick out?” Beca looked cautiously at the leggy brunette.
“Hopefully, something that shows off the girls, cause Beca, you – “
“Woah, what are you doing, Stace! Keep your hands to yourself. You are not going to be handling my…girls.”
“You’re right. How rude of me. Still, use that rack for good. Could definitely help you snag Red."
"Outside of today, how are things between you two?” Stacie asked.
Things had been…great, really. She’s a blast to hang out with. She seems to…get me. We both like music. And she’s just, so pretty…” Beca was then abruptly cut off by the busty brunette.
“Beca. I’m not buying a car here. I don’t need a list of positives and negatives. We all see you two shooting major heart eyes at each other. And the way she gives you extra help with choreography. And that body…my god it’s –“
“Hold up, Stace. I’m aware she’s hot. So tell the Hunter to look elsewhere, please. I know he’s got a mind of his own, so just…no.” Beca said, somewhat glaring at Stacie.
“Ok, I’m being serious now. You do like her, yeah?” Stacie asked.
“Yeah. I do. A lot, actually. And things have been good between us. I’m feeling things for her. Things I haven’t felt before. It's all happening so fast, though.” Beca admitted.
“And...we held hands today. Then I asked her to go with me for dinner at my dad’s place after Halloween.” Beca tried to turn away before Stacie could see her cheeks fill with color.
“So…all I’m hearing is good things. I know the Bella’s are going to be super excited for you two. But, I have to ask what’s got your face all bound up? You look like that Bumper dude on audition day.”
“First off, none of this gets back to Chloe. You got it!” Stacy could immediately tell that Beca meant business.
“Yeah, sure. You can trust me. You know that, right?” The DJ nodded yes. “What’s up?”
“It’s this Halloween Bash. Not the party or date part, but the whole Barden Belle thing. It’s starting to mess with me. I’ve never believed in spirits, but things are happening that are too coincidental to ignore.” Beca said.
“You’re not thinking that because Chloe is a redhead means anything, are you?” Stacie pondered out loud.
“No, that’s not it. There’s something you don’t know about how Chloe and I met.”
“You said you guys met at the Activities Fair, right?” Beca’s fellow Bella asked.
“There was a time after that. I haven’t told anyone about it. But she kinda…mademesingwithherintheshower.” The tiny brunette trying to climb inside her hoodie at this point.
“Yeah, I’m going to need that repeated, Beca. In English, this time.” The leggy freshman walked closer and pulled the hood back off Becca’s head. “I’m almost positive I heard something in there about a shower, yeah?”
“Oh, this is such an inconvenient time to be having a full stroke.” Beca blurted out. “But yeah, I was showering here in the dorm. Chloe sort of, invited herself in and made me sing with her.”
“God, do not look at me like that, Stace.”
“No, no, no. You don’t get to tell me how to look at you after dropping a bomb on the Hunter like I’ve been naked with Chloe Beale in the shower !”
“Uuuggghhh! I was singing when I was in the shower. Next thing I know is she’s standing in front of me. Demanding that I sing with her and then that I audition for the Bellas.”
“Wow! Beca, you silent, mysterious types!” Stacie waved her hands in the air. “You know what, no. I can’t even with you right now. I’m sorry, but we can’t be friends anymore.” Mockingly taping her chin with her nail file, Stacie said “Well, maybe we can. But I’m going to need details first.”
“You’re like a pet sometimes, Stace. The dog or cat that won’t stay down off the furniture. I need a squirt bottle to spray…”
“Beca, you don’t have to spray me, if you want to see my ti –“
“Stacie, come on! Pull your shirt down! You said you were going to be serious. Please.”
“You’re right. Again. But Beca, but you don’t seriously believe that legitimizes the Barden Belle. I mean, Chloe’s real. She’s not a spirit, right.”
“By itself, I could explain away the shower and chalk it up to being a coincidence. But that’s not the end of the story. The dress she had me get today. It’s just like the dress the (no, I’m not using air quotes again, damn it!) soulmate is wearing in the photo.”
Stacy sat directly in front of Beca. “Ok, that’s a little more bizarre , you might say. Anything else?”
“There is. When she took my hand today, I saw something. It was very quick, but real. I saw myself in the dress I had bought less than an hour before. I was holding a guitar in one hand while kneeling in front of…Chloe.”
“Ok, so I just got a little chill, B. What did Chloe say to that?” Stacie asked.
“Are you kidding, Stacie. I couldn’t tell her that. I played it off as forgetting to ask her about dinner at my dad’s. She believed me. Even seemed happy to go with me.”
“I can definitely see how all this has you questioning whether Chloe could be the Barden Belle. So what if she is, you said before you don’t believe in soulmates. Has that changed?”
"Yeah. No…maybe. I don’t know. Remember what I told you I saw – about the guitar, kneeling? I saw that just as she held my hand for the first time.”
“Really? First time? You might not want to hear this. But you need to consider the fact she could be Barden Belle. As crazy as that may sound. Now ask yourself, you don’t have to answer out loud if you don’t want to. Although, it will save the time and trouble of me coaxing it out of you later in some other manner. But do you think Chloe could be your soulmate? Stacie looked Beca in the eyes.
“Say, for a second, that I think we are… soulmates . I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but the legend is that this is last year the Barden Belle is going to search for her soulmate. If she doesn’t find her this year, she’s going to pass on to the other side . But if she reconnects with her soulmate, she stays here, in this world, to be with her love.”
“Becaaa, you have to tell her! You can’t risk it not being true. You have to tell her. And you’ve got to believe it, B. Even if you don’t say right now, from what I’ve seen and heard from you, I think you do believe it.” The tiny DJ, suddenly feeling overwhelmed, stood, and walked toward her door.
“Stace, I’m going to need some time. This is all so much for me to process. You understand, right?”
“Of course, B. I get it. But promise me you won’t deal with all this by yourself. Talk to me, lean on me. You’re my sister. I’m here for you.”
“I know you are, Stace. I’ll get with you tomorrow, ok? I just need some time tonight.”
Notes:
Please forgive any liberties taken with spirits and how they are generally known to conduct themselves. Chloe Beale is anything but the typical spirit!

Chapter Text
The weekend could arrive fast enough for Chloe. She knew it had happened for her. She had found her person.
Beca Mitchell.
It wasn’t a question. She knew it to be true. The way she felt about Beca. The redhead believed in soulmates, and Beca was hers. And up until the past weekend, she thought the freshman might feel the same. The weekend wasn’t a bad one, no. The two had actually had a lot of fun together. Yet the tiny DJ had been a little skittish the last 2 days. Beca hadn’t been extremely comfortable with physical affection from the time Chloe met her. This week the brunette had been jumpy, for lack of a better word. Was Beca having second thoughts? Nerves? Chloe had to find out.
Wearing one of her favorite fall sweater dresses, Chloe knocked on the freshman’s door, Chloe heard an indistinguishable mumble as it was opened.
“Hey, Chlo, what are you doing here?”
“You are such a sweet talker, Becs.”
Chloe got a warm feeling every time she caught the brunette checking her out as she was right now.
“May I come in, Becs? Either that, or tip me before I go. I have your coffee.”
“Leave the smirks to me, Beale, I’m better at it.”
“Beca Mitchell, are you saying you don’t find my smirk appealing…”
“I didn’t say…you know I…get in here.” Beca conceding the point the senior had her flustered, again.
“You are so adorable when you’re rattled, Becs. Good to know I have that effect on you.” The redhead knew she was in charge right now.
“You’ll understand one day, Chlo, I'm a badass. Not that I’m not happy to see you, but aren’t you supposed to be in class?”
“Ended early. Professor had to get out of town for some family thing. So, you get to enjoy my company for a while. I also had something to ask you, thus, the bribe of coffee. Figured you’d be more open to saying yes that way.”
“Should I be frightened, Red?”
“Becaaa, you should never be frightened of me...yet.” Chloe’s smile was positively sinful.
“However, I have been wondering…you’re not having second thoughts about going with me to the Halloween Bash. Are you?” Chloe doing her best to appear as though she was kidding.
“No. Why do you ask that? I’m excited. As excited as I can be about a Halloween party.” Beca smiled. While she was happy to be going with Chloe, she was a little worried about possibly being with the Barden Belle.
“Good. I’m excited too. You just seem, I don’t know, different the last couple of days. I wanted to be sure you hadn’t changed your mind.”
“I mean, really, we’ll be the hottest couple there, you look way sexy in your dress, and we’ll totally dominate the karaoke contest.”
“Karaoke contest? Chlo, you never mentioned that.”
“No? Sorry, Becs. It’ll be great. You’re not mad, are you?”Chloe said.
“Of course not, Chlo. But we haven’t talked about it. What are we even gonna sing?
“Our song, silly. The one we did before, You know, in the …” Chloe’s smile was matched by Beca.
“Shower, yes, Beale. I remember what you forced me to sing when you hijacked my shower!”
Moving closer to the younger woman, Chloe looked into her eyes. “Hijacked? Really, Mitchell? I didn’t hijack your eyes when they were checking out all this…” the redhead’s pose nearly caused Beca to forget her own name.
“I did not…I wasn’t…you were naked , Beale.”
“Relax, Becs. You are too easy. You have to know that. It’s really…priceless.”
“Whatever. Be nice, Red. Or I won’t let you listen to the mix I’ve been working on.” Beca dangling her prized headphones just out of Chloe’s reach.
“No way, I get to hear a new one! It’s totally the songs I gave you last week, right!” Chloe now clapping and bouncing on her heels.
“I’m not saying. You’ll have to listen. Now get over here before I change my mind.” Chloe being pulled forward by that mind numbing smirk directed her way.
“OMG, before I forget. What do you say to a movie Friday night? I know we have the party Saturday. But we haven’t done a movie in a while, it feels like.” Chloe said.
“I don’t know, Chlo. Watch a movie with you, or with Jesse? He did ask first…” Beca now relishing the fact she was now the one in charge.
“Uh huh. He can hang out with the rest of those smelly Trebles. You know you’ll pick me, Bec!” The brunette knew she was powerless to say no to this woman.
“Jealous much, Chlo. Of course, I’d rather be with you. Now, are you going to listen to this, or not?”
Slipping the headphones on, Chloe moved next to the younger woman and took her hand.
Beca gasped. Loud enough for the redhead to hear. It happened again. Beca saw it…again. The same short, powerful, very real vision she’d seen before. There was no denying the timing. Chloe would take her hand, Beca would see a picture of her and Chloe.
“Becs? What’s wrong? You ok?”
“Oh…nothing…I mean, yeah. I’m ok. I thought of a song we could sing at the contest, but I think I like one we talked about earlier. We should definitely sing Titanium. Let me find this mashup for you to listen to, ok? And stop looking at me like that, weirdo.”
Despite their smiles, both women were wondering ‘what the hell just happened.’
Bella practice that day did not go particularly well. Aubrey’s lack of any patience whatsoever only served to exacerbate Beca’s conundrum. Somewhat relieved that she wouldn’t have to deal with the General any longer today, Beca caught up with Stacie after leaving the auditorium.
“What’s your secret? Dealing with Posen, I mean?”
“Beca, Beca, Beca. I knew one day we’d be having this conversation.” Stacie said.
“You don’t even know what I was going to ask you, Stace. How did you know we’d be having this conversation? And what the hell are you smiling about?”
“You have a date with Chloe, I know you’re sexually frustrated, and Posen was all up in your business today. Maybe a better choice of words would be ‘I knew we'd be having a conversation.”
“You literally have no shame, Stace. But now that you mention it, yeah. How does Posen not get to you?”
“Oh, she does. It’s hot, right! I mean when she gets in full-on boss mode. I’d let her boss me –“
“Stace. I do not need to know what you’d let Posen do. If you could stand down for just a little while. I wanted to talk some more…about…you know.”
“Yeah, no problem. The coffee shop is like five minutes from here. Does that work for you?”
After finding a seat and their order taken, Stacie started “B, I’m concerned. You’re looking all bound again.”
“I saw it again. The vision I told you about. I saw it today.”
“What happened? When was this? Was Chloe there?”
“It was earlier today. Yeah, Chloe was there. Same thing as the other day, I saw it right when she held my hand again. This all is feeling really real , Stace. And I feel like my entire world has been turned upside down.”
“But I do have an idea for Saturday night now.” Beca added.
“I hope so. Time is running out. Anything I can do to help?”
“I don’t think so. Well, maybe. Geez, I can't think straight right now.”
Beca, please breathe. I’m here for you. Got your back and all that shit. We’ll get you through this. Now what’s this idea for Saturday…”
“There’s this song I’ve been practicing on the guitar. And Chloe said there’s some singing or karaoke contest at the party. She and I are supposed to sing a song together. Maybe I could do this song as a solo for her. After our duet”
“I like the sound of that, Bec. But I still don’t see what you need my help with?’
“I think Kimmy Jin is in tonight. I wanted you to listen to me play the song and give me your thoughts. Could we use your room? Or the auditorium. No, they keep that place locked, don’t they? Fuck.”
“No worries, B. I can get the key from Posen. That would be the perfect place to use.”
“How the hell are you gonna get the key from the General?”
“Me and the girls can get anything, didn’t you realize that?” the leggy brunette proclaimed, as she grabbed her breasts and pushed them up proudly.
“Put those things away, Stace. Save 'em for later. Also, Saturday night, can you keep Posen occupied? The last thing I need is her to ruin things by being all…herself.”
“Consider it done. The Hunter and the girls will take one for the team.”
“Stace, you really need to think these things through before you say them out loud.” The DJ mumbled, with her head firmly planted in her hands.
“Beca, there’s one more thing that needs to be taken care of before Saturday night. And that’s you. If you go into this date in the state you’re in, you’ll be humping Chloe’s leg before you finish the duet. Now I’m willing to help you work that out. If you’re up for it.”
“Sometimes, I think you’re so tall that oxygen doesn't go all the way up to your brain, Conrad. I do not need your help ‘working anything out’.” Dear god, is there a support group for using air quotes too much? The young woman wondered.
“Ok, I get it. You wanna take care of that yourself. Well, my collection of toys is available, should you have the need…”
“And, with that, I’m out of here. Meet you in the auditorium in an hour?” Beca said while taking money out of her pocket.
“I got this, B. Parents are keeping me funded while I’m here. Their “guilt money” for not supporting me all these years, I guess. See you in an hour.”
A little over an hour later, Beca was pacing outside the door to the auditorium.
Beca noticed Stacie was not the only one approaching the auditorium. It didn’t take long to make out who was with her.
“Before you say anything, B, she insisted she would only unlock the auditorium if she was allowed to come along.” Stacie could see the DJ’s body tensing.
“Posen.” Beca gritted out.
“Mitchell.” Aubrey replied.
“So you will let me rehearse here?” Beca wasn’t happy Aubrey was here, but she didn’t have a lot of options if she really wanted use of the auditorium.
“We’ll see about that, Mitchell. Let’s go inside and you can tell me what you have in mind.”
Once inside the auditorium, Beca whispered to Stacie “What did you tell her so far?”
“She told me you plan on singing a song for my best friend. I was curious as to what song you had in mind. Also, what your reasons for all of this is.”
“Look, Aubrey, it’s not really your business what my reasons are. It’s between me and Chlo -”
“Beca, Chloe has been my best friend for years. She’s more than a sister to me. I’ll always look out for her best interests.” Aubrey said.
“Think about it, do you really believe I don't have her best interests in mind, Aubrey? You truly believe I would do something that might hurt Chloe?!” The freshman was trying very hard to be civil, but Aubrey’s main concern at this time was not civility.
“Mitchell, I haven’t seen anything from you that indicates you have anyone’s interests other than your own in mind.”
Feeling cornered, the brunette lashed out before the Bellas co-captain had an opportunity to continue.
“Aubrey, you don't know one thing about me! Everything you think you know about me is a result of your own assumptions. You haven’t taken one second to really get to know me. If you did, you’d realize how I care for Chloe and would never do a thing to hurt her. Now I’m not going to stand here all night and try to defend myself to you. I’ve had enough of that! I’m doing this song for Chloe with or without your help. I’m outta here.”
Picking up her guitar and turning for the door, Stacie jumped in.
“Beca, wait a second! Aubrey, you promised me when I said you could come along that you would be open to what Beca wanted to do. Stop being the Bellas captain, just for a little while, and be Chloe’s best friend. Let Beca play the song. Then, we can talk about why she wants to do this, ok?” Looking between Beca and Aubrey for any conciliatory motions, the taller brunette asked “Beca, would you be willing to do that? We all want the same thing here, I think. We can talk about it, right?”
“Of course we can, I didn’t come here to fight. I’m kinda on edge with everything that’s going on. I’m sorry, Aubrey.” Beca’s body language softened as she walked back towards the two Bellas standing near the stage.
Stacie turned to the tall blonde “Aubrey. What do you say.”
“Yeah, I apologize Beca. I didn’t mean to be so accusatory. I’d like to hear the song if you still feel like it.”
“Sure I do. Let me get set up and then you can have a listen.”
When Beca strummed the last notes, Stacie and Aubrey remained silent.
“Somebody say something, please. Beca thought maybe she had done something very wrong.
Turning to Aubrey, Stacie was anxious for her thoughts.
“Well? I thought it was incredible. Aubrey?” Stacie said.
“I think by the time you finish that song, Beca , you’re going to have a very emotional redhead on your hands. You’d better prepare yourself for the embrace that’s headed your way.” Aubrey Posen even appeared to be a little misty-eyed.
“Wow, ok. Wasn’t expecting that. Thanks guys. It means a lot. It’s good with the guitar, yeah?” Beca asked.
“Beca, she will be melting before you play that last note. I mean, I’m a little -”
“Ok, Conrad, we get the picture. Let me put this guitar away and I’ll be right down.
Beca walked up to Stacie and Aubrey, leaning up against the stage.
“Ok, so I guess the song is set. What else did you want to know, Aubrey. I can’t promise I’ll answer everything, but I’ll do my best to put you at ease.” The shorter brunette was willing to try and somewhat placate Aubrey.
“I’ll just ask it straight out, Beca. Do you think Chloe is the Barden Belle?”
“Ok, jumping right in. I’ve only recently learned about the Barden Belle. But there are several things that have caused me to wonder, yeah.”
“And is that why you’re doing this?”
Beca had the feeling she knew where the blonde was headed with her questions, but there was only so much she was willing to share.
“Aubrey, I can see why you might question my motivation. I do. Even before I found out about the Belle legend, I had feelings for Chloe. Those feelings have gotten stronger the more I get to know her and am around her. I’m not going to tell everything, mainly because I haven’t discussed all of it with her. But the chance she could be the Belle is not my main motivation for doing this.”
“It’s true, Aubrey. Beca and I have talked several times about her feelings for Chloe. You’ve been around them, you have to see it. The rest of us do.”
Aubrey couldn’t deny what she’d seen, and what she had heard from Chloe herself.
“Yeah, I have seen it. I still have reservations, but I would never stand in the way of Chloe being happy. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but you do make her happy, Beca. Having said that, don’t think for a second that I will hesitate to hunt you down should you hurt her.” A devilish grin taking shape, she added “there won’t be anything left of your vocal chords for the wolves to get at. Are we clear?!”
“Crystal, I won’t hurt Chloe.” Beca finished with a mock salute.
As the three reached the point for Stacie and Beca to break off, the taller brunette stayed with Aubrey.
“Stacie, are you not going to your dorm?” Beca asked.
“I’m going to make sure Aubrey gets back ok, Beca. You’re good from here, right, B?” Stacie giving a not so subtle wink to the DJ.
“Yeah, sure. You make sure Aubrey gets to her place ok. I’ll catch you two later.”
“Thanks, Stacie. But I'll be ok. I can handle myself” Aubrey said.
“Oh, Aubrey, I’m quite sure you can.” Stacie added, while linking arms with Aubrey. “But it’s so close to Halloween. I wouldn’t feel right, letting you walk the rest of the way all by yourself.”
“Uh huh. You don’t know what it was like growing up with two older brothers.” Aubrey said.
“Well, you can tell me all about it on the way then.” Stacie hugged the blonde’s arm tighter.
“This damsel in distress thing is kinda grossing me out. I’m outta here.” Beca said before turning for the dorms. “See you two tomorrow.”
Beca was awake early Friday morning. It was the day before the Bash, and her anxiety was high. With no class to get to for at least two hours, the brunette decided to clean up and take care of her laundry.
While checking the pockets of her jeans needing to be washed, she pulled out her half of the torn photo her and Chloe would have with them at the party tomorrow night. She took a look at the photo and what she saw gave her chills. Her half of the photo was different now. She remembered clearly when the photo had been taken, she was wearing her blue dress. She remembered this because she thought it was odd Chloe wanted the picture taken before Beca bought the dress she would wear to the party. Beca stood motionless as she stared at the photo. The photo was not her in the blue dress she had worn. The photo now was of her in the dress she purchased later that day. The black/purple flannel pattern dress that the Barden Belle’s soulmate wore in the only picture Beca had ever seen of the two women. She turned the photo over to check for Chloe’s signature. It was the same thing Beca saw the redhead write the day it was taken, “Belle’s soulmate - Halloween Bash - 10/24/12. The young woman was unsure of what to do next. ‘This can’t be happening. There has to be an explanation for this. Fuck, there is no explanation this. No logical explanation.’ Beca said out loud. ‘What am I going to do? Who would even believe this!’ The brunette knew she had to talk to someone. Anyone.

Chapter Text
Beca knew she was tempting fate by entering the building her father taught in, but he did help her get the meeting with Professor Beltran. The freshman desperately needed to speak with the professor.
The DJ was apprehensive about what she would say to the professor. How much information was she comfortable revealing. Not much, was her initial thought. There was a good chance Chloe was not the Belle, and Beca knew how guilty she would feel for starting an unsubstantiated rumor. After considering what her father had told her about the professor, Beca was confident that Professor Beltran would exercise discretion with any information the brunette shared with her.
After lightly knocking on the office door, a woman’s voice was heard…” It’s unlocked, please come in.”
Opening the door and poking her head inside, Beca recognized the smartly dressed woman sitting at the desk.
“You’re Professor Beltran?” Beca asked. “We’ve met before, haven’t we?”
“Yes, we have. Although you were a bit younger then. Even if we hadn't, I’d recognize you from the pictures Professor Mitchell shows to everyone.”
Relaxing a bit and entering the office, Beca approached the open chair across the desk from the professor.
“Please, have a seat, Rebecca.” The professor motioned to the empty chair.
“Oh, it’s just Beca. Thanks.” the brunette was quick to correct.
“It’s been a few years, Beca. I must say you’ve grown into quite the young lady. How long has it been?”
“Thanks, I guess. And I’m not sure. Do they even have those holiday parties anymore? That’s where we met, right? When my dad used to drag me to those faculty functions whenever I’d visit.” Beca said, remembering she always hated her dad playing the happy family man in front of everyone.
“They do have them. And yes, that is where we met. Several times. I still chuckle at the thought of you being pulled off that little Noah Grayson boy. What did he do to you, anyway?” Professor Beltran asked.
“Idiot tried kissing me, even after I told him how gross he was.” Even Beca chuckled at the memory.
“Anyway, your father didn’t tell me the reason you wanted to see me. How can I help you, Beca?”
“Ok, yeah…he mentioned you were familiar with the Barden Belle legend. I was hoping…if you don’t mind…could you tell me a little about it? I mean, maybe something not everyone knows about it?” Beca very unsure of what she even wanted to know.
“There’s a good amount of information that isn’t common knowledge. Would you be able to narrow the scope of your curiosity, dear?”
“Yeah, well...uugghhh. What we talk about is confidential, right?” Beca asked.
“Of course, maintaining a high level of confidentiality is of utmost importance to me. Otherwise people wouldn't have come to me with the amount of information, sightings, and other interactions that they have.” Professor Beltran stressed.
“Ok, so I’ve met someone who I’ve become close to. And this person invited me to go with her to a party tomorrow, dressed as the Barden Belle and her soulmate. There’s been a couple of things that have happened since I agreed to go. I’ll just say they’ve made me rethink what I feel about spirits, soulmates, and such.” Beca taking a keen interest in her fingers at this point.
“Would you mind telling me what some of those things are? Maybe that would give me a good place to begin.” Professor Beltran picked up a pad of paper, ready to take notes.
“The picture I saw wasn’t all that clear. But it looks like the Belle was a redhead.” Beca looking to the professor for confirmation. “Her soulmate, she was a brunette?”
“She was.” Professor Beltran replied. “Although the picture the public has seen doesn’t reflect that all that well.”
Beca took out the photo of her in the black/purple dress and placed it in front of the professor. “Does this look like the dress she was wearing?”
“Oh my, yes. In fact, seeing this picture of you is the nearest likeness I’ve seen. It's remarkable.” The professor said as she studied Beca’s picture.
“Another question. Have you had any sightings this year?” Beca reached forward to take her photo back.
“Sightings this year are, in fact, the lowest they’ve ever been. At least what’s been reported to me.”
“Are you able to tell me how many or when, Professor Beltran?”
“Yes. I’ve investigated only one reported sighting this year. And that wasn’t really an interaction, per say. Someone reported seeing what looked like the Belle leaving the Baker Hall showers one night. Have you seen anything out of the ordinary, Beca?”
“Oh, I thought I saw something outside my shower one night. But it was just due to lack of sleep. You know how the mind can play tricks on a person.” Beca hoped Professor Beltran would accept that explanation and not press any further.
“Beca, you mentioned someone who had invited you to a…party, was it?” Beca nodded to the affirmative. “Can you share any information about this? Or have they done something to cause you concern?” Professor Beltran asked.
“Oh, she’s a redhead. I thought she kinda looked like the Belle.” Beca said.
“Not to pry, but it wouldn’t happen to be Chloe Beale, would it?” The professor noticed Beca’s immediate look of concern. “I’m sorry, have I said spoken out of turn?”
“Why would you think it was her? That’s a pretty big leap just off me saying she’s a redhead.” Beca tried to remain calm.
“I apologize, Beca, it was merely a guess based upon some things I’ve pieced together. Your father mentioned you had joined the Bellas. I know Ms. Beale is a member of that group. And between you and I, I’ve had numerous students come forward saying how they thought she resembled the Belle. I’m so sorry if I’ve said anything out of place.”
Beca relaxed before saying “No, you’re fine. I probably overreacted. Sorry.”
“Not at all. Is there anything else I could answer for you?” the professor asked.
“There is. Is it true this is the last year the Belle will search for her lost soulmate? That she’ll cross over and never return if she doesn’t find her?” The brunette asked.
“It is true. The legend is that if she doesn’t find her lost soulmate by this year. And her soulmate does not confess she loves the Belle, then she will leave this world broken-hearted. Which, from my perspective, would be sad. I would really miss her.” The professor grinned widely.
“Well, that sort of leads me to my last question. You said this year has had the least number of sightings since you’ve been looking into them. Why do you think that is?” Beca asked.
“My theory is that either the Belle has lost hope, or she has found her soulmate and is awaiting her to declare her love. That’s just an educated guess, mind you. But I feel I am just about as knowledgeable about the Belle as the subject I have a master’s degree in. So, for whatever that’s worth…” The professor finished with a little shrug of her shoulders.
“I’d say your opinion is probably the most knowledgeable one I could find. Outside of the Belle herself.” The brunette chuckled a bit as she stood. “Thank you for your time, professor.”
“It was my pleasure, Beca. Stop by any time. And I’ll tell Noah Grayson hi for you.” Professor Grayson said while standing to shake Beca’s hand.
“No way, that little shi…I mean he’s still around?” Beca smirk making a return to her face.
“Indeed he is. He’s part of the cleaning crew.”
“You mean he’s the janitor, right?” To which Professor Beltran indicated he was. “Tell that idiot I’ll kick his butt again if steps out of line.” Both women sharing a good laugh while the professor waved goodbye to Beca.
“See, Chlo, told you I was badass.” The DJ mumbled to herself while walking away.
Chloe would be over soon with the movie she had chosen for the two to watch. Beca had already called in their Chinese takeout order. It was due to arrive in about 30 minutes. Beca took the opportunity to do some research. The DJ desperately wanted to understand her vision, as best should, anyway. Site after site were leading her to the same conclusion. She was nervous (well, duh). No, she was freaking scared as hell, at the prospect of revealing her feelings to Chloe. That’s why she wasn’t able to reach the redhead in her vision, right?
The brunette was certain of how she felt. She was in love with the redhead. It was how she got to this point, or rather how fast she had arrived here, that was causing her insides to be on constant red alert. So many things Beca felt were new to her. Being with the older woman, even thinking about her, was a paradox for the brunette. It was calming, exciting, and nerve racking all at once. Was the possibility of not having Chloe in her life after midnight tomorrow a factor? She couldn’t really argue that it wasn't. In the end, the path she had taken to arrive at this point wasn’t her main concern. Convincing herself to “sack up” and tell the redhead was.
Chloe’s apprehension wasn’t how she felt about Beca. She was in love the adorable, sexy, badass DJ. The older woman was certain of that. Her heart expanded at the thought of being with Beca. It was like coming home. She felt complete. Like her search was over. It was the brunette’s feelings that caused her apprehension. At times Beca seemed to be on the same page. And then there were times the younger woman almost seemed scared of her own shadow. Still, Chloe saw an affection in Beca’s eyes like nonetth she had ever experienced. The older woman was certain she’d found the one she was meant to be with.
A short time later, that priceless smile and cerulean eyes were at Beca’s door.
“I got the Chinese takeout, you don’t mind if we eat first, do ya?” Chloe asked.
“You ever seen me turn down food? I don’t think so.” Beca replied.
“Plus, anything to delay whatever mind-numbing Halloween flic I’m sure you’ve picked out for us.” Beca took a step back just in case.
“Shut up, Mitchell. I can leave at any time. I can think of a few who would enjoy my company tonight.” Chloe struck a pose that caused the DJ momentary amnesia.
“Nah. You came all this way, and you did bring my favorite takeout. Might as well stay, Red.”
“You’re such a sweet talker, Bec. I thought you’d see it my way.” Chloe smiled at the younger woman.
Sitting on Beca’s bed. The two women found themselves in a familiar position. Chloe was as close to Beca as she could get. Yet another thing that caused the freshman anxiety in the past. She’d never admit it aloud, but the brunette welcomed it now.
Chloe hadn’t picked out a Halloween thriller for the two to watch. She’d chosen a rom-com – “The Lake House.”
“This is totes amazing, Bec. You’re just going to love it. It’s so sweet.” Chloe said.
“Yeah, cause nothing screams romance like Keanu Reeves, right.” Becas reply dripping with sarcasm.
“Come on, Becs, give it a chance. They were meant to be together. But it almost didn’t happen. I bet you’ll be crying by the time it’s over. They’re soulmates, Bec.” The redhead nudged Beca’s shoulder.
“I might be crying…”
“Beca.” Chloe said.
“Alright. I take it back. Go ahead and start this thing.”
Over an hour later, Chloe was so happy. The brunette asleep on her shoulder, with her arm wrapped around the senior’s waist, just might have been the reason. The redhead didn’t even mind the tiny spot of drool on her shoulder. Chloe had to get a picture of this. This was one of the most adorable (in a badass sort of way) things she’d ever seen. Plus, this photo would be priceless for blackmail.
Just after snapping the picture, Beca stirred. Chloe knew she’d was busted. Quickly hiding her phone under her leg, she heard the brunette mumble something she didn’t understand. Beca stirred again. Quickly, she was tossing and turning as a scowl showed itself on her face. Chloe recognized the DJ was having a nightmare. The senior knew enough not to wake the brunette. But she was concerned for Beca. As she reached out for the younger woman’s arm, Beca’s eyes shot open.
Chloe could see tears in Beca’s eyes, and she was trembling.
“Hey, Becs. It’s alright. I’m here. You’re ok, Bec.”
“Come here, Bec. It’s ok, I promise.” Chloe held Beca and stroked her back softly. Can I get you anything? Some water, maybe?”
“Yeah. Please, I could use a drink” Beca said quietly.
“Sorry about that, Chlo. This is embarrassing.”
“Stop, Beca. Why would you apologize? It was a bad dream. It happens. You’re better now?” The redhead looked on with trepidation. “Do you want to talk about it?”
“No. Not now. Maybe later. Can we just finish the movie?” Beca said.
“Wow. You sure you’re ok? Beca Mitchell wants to finish a movie!” Beca gave the redhead her best ‘watch it’ glare.’ “What, too soon?”
“You’re lucky you’re pretty, Beale. Let's do this before I change my mind.”
Beca was the one to seek out closeness now. The nightmare had stunned her. She had seen the vision again, only it had changed. Chloe was now moving away from the younger woman. The DJ did her absolute best to quell her sense of despair as she sat next to Chloe.
Later, after finishing the movie and coaxing an “ok, it was pretty good. But badass’ don’t cry at sappy rom coms’ admission from Beca, Chloe got off the bed.
“Well, I’ll get going. I’m so excited for tomorrow, Becs. It's going to be awes!” Chloe nearly bouncing with excitement.
“Awes, got it. Hey, Chlo. Would you do me a favor?” the DJ asked.
“Sure, Becs. Anything for you. You know that.”
“Stay...here...for tonight. Please.” Chloe was taken aback by the misty-eyed brunette’s question.
“Sure, Bec. Whatever you need. Are you sure you’re ok?”
“Yeah. I am. Or I will be. I just…I don’t know…” Beca said, trying to hide her eyes from the older woman’s gaze.
Chloe walked back to the bed and sat down.
“You don’t need to say anything, Bec. I’ll stay with you. You want to help me find something to wear, or should I just pick out my favorite stuff of yours?” Chloe’s reassuring smile was just the thing to ease the anxiety the brunette was feeling.
“I’ll grab you something. Otherwise, you’ll be stealing my best stuff.”
Chloe showing her best mock look of hurt, “Beca. I would never.”
‘That woman is going to be the death of me’ Beca thought as she shook her head…
Beca pried her eyes open Saturday morning. ‘It’s not even nine o’clock, what the hell am I doing awake? And why is there an arm wrapped around my waist?’ The brunette thought to herself. This feeling was…not so bad. Yeah, the DJ was good with this feeling. That feeling of Chloe Beale pressed up against her back, arm around Beca’s waist. And damn, she does always smell good!
The thought of waking up next to the redhead should have turned Beca into a bonfire of nerves. That wasn’t happening now.
“Yeah, I’m still here. Are you going to continue lying there, pretending to be asleep?” Beca didn’t have to see her face to know the redhead was smiling at her.
“I didn’t notice you trying to escape, or anything, you sleep, ok?” Chloe said, while propping herself up on an elbow.
“I did. Slept better than I have in a long time. Thanks…for staying, Red.” Beca said.
Chloe so wanted to kiss Beca right now. Unsure of how the DJ would respond, she gave her a chaste peck on the cheek.
“You don’t have to thank me, Bec. You know I’d do anything for you.” Chloe said.
“Yeah. Well, it wasn’t so bad. You didn’t hardly drool at all.” Beca replied, sporting a warm smile.
“Speaking of drool…nah, forget I said anything.” Chloe decided to save her blackmail photo for a more opportune time.
“What are you hiding, Beale?”
“Paranoid much, Mitchell. ”
“You know what. No. It doesn’t matter. Whatever you’ve got up your sleeve, save it.” Beca said before asking, “I assume you’re going to be heading back to your place soon. You want to get some coffee first? My treat.”
“You are totes the sweetest, Becs. When you want to be, of course.” Chloe nudged the younger woman with her shoulder, “You gonna buy me a chocolate chip cookie?”
“I’m regretting this already. Come on, Chlo, let's get ready.” Beca said.
Beca returned from breakfast with a noticeable bounce in her step. That changed when she took in the person standing outside her door.
Aubrey Posen.
Her first inclination was to make a run for the stairs. Too late, she’d been spotted.
“Don’t even think about it, Mitchell. I’m faster than you are. Besides, I come in peace.” Aubrey said.
“Aubrey Posen has jokes. Should we order a drug test?” Beca smirked as she unlocked the door.
“I can see that someone would need drugs to put up with you, Beca.” the blonde replied.
“Not that I’m unhappy to see you (she totally was), but what brings you by?” the DJ asked.
“Have you been on Instagram, or Twitter, today?” Aubrey asked.
“No, I was having a nice breakfast with Chlo. What’s up?” Beca asked, pulling her phone out of her back pocket.
“There’s a good amount of buzz about last night. The sighting. You should take a look.” Aubrey said.
“You want to give me some idea of what sighting I’m looking for?” Beca asked, apprehensive about what she was going to find.
“You’ll know it when you see it. There's a report of a sighting last night of the Barden Belle, In this dorm’s showers.”
“But Chloe was here with me last night. We were together watching a movie, then she stayed over.” Beca said, hoping the Bella captain wouldn't press for more details.
“I know she was. Well, I assumed so. She texted me letting me know she would be staying over.” Aubrey said.
“Can you save me a little searching? Is there anything to it? Is there something for me to be worried about?” Beca said.
“I don’t know how credible it is. And I debated whether or not to even tell you. But I figured you’d see it. And I just wanted to make sure you were...ok...with everything.” Aubrey managed to get out.
“Aubrey. I don’t know what to say. Thanks...I guess.”
“Don’t let it go to your head, Mitchell. I do care, you know...about Chloe, that is.” A smirk beginning to show on Aubrey’s face.
“Noted. Don’t worry, no one will think of you as anything but completely rotten, Aubrey.” Beca’s smile conveyed a less threatening message.
Aubrey, opening the door to leave, turned to the freshman “Look, Beca, I’ve seen some things over the last few years that make even me question the existence of spirits, soulmates, and the Barden Belle. One thing I do not question is the heart of Chloe Beale. It’s pure and anyone would be hard pressed to make me believe otherwise. Whatever happens, take care of it.”
“Well, there’s something we agree on, Aubrey. Now get out of here before you say something you’ll hate yourself for later.” Beca said.
“Oh, I already have. See you later, Mitchell.”
Chapter 5: 5

Chapter Text
Beca approached the door to Stacie’s room. She had only known the leggy, busty, brainy brunette for a few months. Please don’t ask the DJ to describe Stacie. She hadn't yet decided what adjective fit her best.
Bracing herself for whatever costume Stacie might be wearing (Beca hoped she wasn’t going as Lady Godiva), the DJ knocked.
“Hey, B...damn, I don’t think anyone in the sixties looked as hot as you do tonight!” Stacie earning herself an eye-roll.
Amazed at what was on display before her, Beca managed to say “I know I should be used to all your business being on front street…is that latex?! How did you get that on, Conrad?”
“Better yet, would you like to go put the rest of it on?! That barely covers your junk. And your ass! That's barely covered too.” Beca’s face was nearly as red as Stacie’s Devil costume.
“I know, right! I got to tell you, this corset top...the girls have never looked better.” Stacie said.
“Um…yeah. You know there’s going to be like a tractor beam from everyone’s eyes straight to the girls.” Beca said while taking in her gorgeous friend,
“Tell the truth. You’re kinda turned, aren’t you, B!” Stacie doing her best to make Beca uncomfortable.
The outfit was finished off with devil red latex gloves, a pitchfork, devil’s horns, and high heeled over-the-knee boots. Every asset the tall brunette had been gifted with was on full display tonight.
“Please tell me you have a coat or a cape. Just something to wear over that (Beca motioning exaggeratedly at Stacie’s form) while we walk across the campus.”
“I know, with…all this (Stacie striking a sinful pose), and you looking sexy as fuck in that high skirt, they’ll all be wantin what we got!” the taller woman proudly exclaimed.
Stacie excitedly grabbed Beca’s arm, “That’s not even the best part, Beca! Aubrey is going as this sexy vampire, so she must obey my commands. And do I have some commands in mind for her.”
“Stace, you could be arrested for the look on your face alone.” Beca chuckled.
“I could. Cause I’ve got nothing legal in mind for Posen tonight!” Stacie practically yelled.
“Damn, I’m turning myself on, Beca. Let’s get out of here, we have some sinning to do.”
After enduring countless catcalls, and few marriage proposals, Stacie and Beca arrived at Aubrey and Chloe’s apartment. Stacie seemed to lose temporary use of her ability to speak as Aubrey opened the door.
“Damn, Posen, between you and Stace, I don’t know who’s wearing less.” Beca said while shaking her head at her sister Bellas.
Aubrey informed the two that she was dressed as the Lusty Vampire. Her costume featuring a black velvet overcoat with ruffled lace trim sleeves. There was sequin trim throughout. And the corset that tied in the front revealed how well conditioned the Bella co-captain was. All that was topped off with a lace neck piece, black shorts, and a top hat. Although what held Stacie’s attention at the moment was the black fishnet stockings hugging legs that rivaled Stacie’s. The taller brunette whispered to Beca, “This is going to be a longgg night.
Stacie reached to mockingly close Beca’s mouth when Chloe came out of her room. Dressed in a bright retro hippie dress with a flair skirt that barely covered the redhead’s jaw dropping back side. Knee-high boots provided ample proof Chloe Beale had put in plenty of cardio time. Beca’s thoughts returned to the shower invasion as she was unable to avoid staring at the senior’s cleavage.
“I guess that means you approve, Becs.” Chloe said as Beca realized she’d been caught staring…by everyone in the room.
“Approve? Yeah…that...works, Red. I mean, have you seen you? Asking me if I approve.” The brunette mumbled.
“And shut up, Conrad. I can totally hear you snickering over there. What are you, twelve?!” Beca said.
Clapping her hands, Aubrey said “Ok, looks like we’re ready. Let’s get going.”
“You two get started. Beca and I will be right there.” Chloe said.
When they were alone, Chloe asked “You have your half of the picture, right, Becs?”
“I do. Why do you ask?” Beca said with a raised eyebrow.
“No reason, just making sure. What’s that look for? Is something wrong?” the redhead asked.
“Nothing wrong. The picture is not…you know what. Not important. Let’s go, huh.” Beca said.
“You’re being rather…evasive, Bec. I told you everything would work itself out, didn’t I?”
“Yes, you did, Chlo. And you were right about that.” The DJ looked suspiciously at Chloe.
“Ok, Becs, let's get going., you’ve only got until midnight to win my heart.” Chloe stopped the brunette dead in her tracks with a devilish grin.
Beca’s jaw dropped. Only able to stare at the beauty before her.
“Well, come on. You don’t want to be a minute late., do ya?”
The four sexy Bellas found themselves in front of the Treble House a short time later. CR was first out of the door, dressed as a police officer, to greet Stacie them.
Beca walked up the sidewalk, she leaned toward CR, whispering “Close your mouth, Officer, you’re drooling all over yourself.”
Once inside the house, the four Bellas were received as Hollywood stars arriving at an after party. Chloe was first to notice Cleopatra (Fat Amy) being fanned by one of her servants (Bumper). “That’s disturbing on so many levels.” The redhead chuckled. “Come on, Aubrey, let’s see if we can locate the rest of the girls. Becs, will you be alright until I get back?”
“Yeah. But if it’s ok, why don’t me and Stace come with?. I know I'm…curious to see what the rest of these nerds are made up as.” Beca said before noticing several testosterone crazed males pushing up on Stacie. Making her way through and taking Stacie by the arm, “Come on, succubus, we need your powers elsewhere.”
Wading through the sea of bodies occupying the dance floor, Stacie and Beca located Aubrey, Chloe, and most of the Bellas near the keg. Lily was spot on as Wednesday Adams (she was able to use clothes she already owned). Jessica and Ashley were so adorable as Cinderella and Snow White. The head-scratcher was Flo, who was dressed as a Cheerleader. One of her accessories was a sword, hanging from a belt around her waist.
Stacie leaned close to Beca, whispering “Do you think cheerleaders in her country really wear swords?”
“Would that shock you? At all?” Beca replied.
It was nearly time for the karaoke/singing contest to begin. The liquor seemed to have loosened up Aubrey, who was currently grinding on a very, very receptive She-Devil.
Chloe had been gone for several minutes, looking for a restroom. Beca decided to go find the redhead. She hadn’t gone far when she heard that voice, “Becaw! What is the Belle’s soulmate doing all by herself? You need a drink?” Jesse said.
“Swanson, why did I ever think anything good could come from telling you about this. Geez, back off, dude. I’m sure I’ve got a breath mint here for you.” Beca was clearly unimpressed with the Treble’s level of intoxication.
“Relax, Beca, it’s not like everyone doesn’t know about you two. Where is the Belle, anyway? I know you two are singing in the contest. Why did I see your name on the list twice, Becaw?” Jesse asked.
Beca pulled Jesse away from the crowd, “Swanson, keep it together, huh. We talked about this. I’m doing a song for Chloe right after we sing our duet.” The DJ said, while taking the drink from Jesse’s hand. “Why don’t you switch to water. Just for a while, ok?”
Aubrey and Stacie walked up to Beca, handing her a fresh drink. Jesse turned and disappeared into the kitchen.
“Where’s Chloe?” Aubrey asked.
Beca spotted Chloe, who was talking to a couple of people she recognized from audition day. Chloe caught Beca’s glance and gave her a clear ‘help me’ look.
Beca saddled up beside the sexy redhead, putting her arm around the Belle.
“Who’s your friends, Belle?”
Before Chloe could answer, Bumper came racing by, with a panicked look on his face. Not far behind was Flo, waving her sword in the air and shouting something no one quite understood.
A few steps behind Flo was Fat Amy, who turned to Aubrey and Chloe, shouting “Help! She says in her country he would have his ‘pp’ cut off and be paraded through the town!”
Beca turned to Stacie, saying “I guess we now know why she needed the sword?”
A short while later, the Guatemalan Cheerleader had been subdued, and the sword secured. Things appeared to be calm just in time for the singing contest.
It had been a spirited battle, the Bellas desperately wanting to finish off the Trebles with Beca and Chloe’s performance of Titanium.
Aubrey took Chloe aside a short time before her and Beca were due up. “You ok, Chloe. You seem a bit distracted tonight. Is something bothering you? Did the hob…I mean, did Beca say something to upset you?”
“No, I’m fine. She’s been wonderful, Brey. That’s the problem. Beca’s been so fantastic tonight. And, my god, she looks so hot! I can’t wait any longer, Brey. I have to talk to her…now.” Chloe said, beginning to move away from her co-captain.
“Chloe, wait. Just till you're done singing, ok? Then we’ll find a place for you two where you won’t be disturbed. Stacie will help me keep everyone away. I promise. Just wait a little while, yeah?” Aubrey said.
Chloe nodded affirmatively as Beca strolled up next to her.
“Everything ok, Red? You ready to put these Trebles out of their misery? And mine too.” Beca said with a warming smile. "I’m going to give them my flash drive for the music and then we’re up, ok.”
“Yeah, Becs, I’ll wait right here for you.” The redhead seemed to have an extra spark in her eyes.
Beca stepped closer to the older woman, placing her hands on Chloe’s hips. “Hey, if I haven’t told you enough, you look amazing, Chlo. The Belle, or anyone else for that matter, could never compete with you. And we’re going to kill this, right. You and me. They can’t touch us on this one!”
Chloe desperately wanted to lean forward and kiss the brunette. She placed her arms over Beca’s shoulders. She gave her a kiss on the cheek and a smile that could light up the darkest night. “You know it, Bec. They don’t stand a chance against us.”
“Ok, stay right here, don’t go anywhere, ok?” ‘And don’t cross over to the other side, Or any shit like that,’ Beca thought to herself.
Midway through Titanium, everyone who could hear the two singing was quiet. Awestruck by the harmony Beca and Chloe were supplying. Even Aubrey was motionless. She had heard harmony before, but never like this.
Anyone with a working pair of eyes could see the unique connection before them.
The two women serenading each other could see it too. Something this special didn’t happen every day. Each was determined to hang on to it with all they had.
Beca and Chloe stood inches apart as their duet closed, each with a smile, and the warmth they'd shared before. Only this time, they ended with a warm embrace, swaying as they held one another.
The pair were swarmed by the rest of the Bellas before they knew it.
Feeling inspired, and a bit intoxicated, the blonde Bella co-captain gave Bumper a pointed smirk before proclaiming “Suck it, Allen!”
The rest of the Bellas followed Amy to the kitchen following a shout of “Shot’s Pitches!” Leaving Chloe and Beca alone.
“Becs, can we talk? I really have something I need to say to you.” the redhead said.
“We will, Chlo. I promise. I just have something I need to do first. Stay right here, and as soon as I’m done, we’ll talk. I have to do this first, though.” Beca giving the older woman a reassuring nod.
Jesse approached the DJ, carrying a guitar and a stool. The Treble handed Beca the instrument, then set the stool and microphone stand in place. Beca thanked him before he walked over to near the spot the Bellas had gathered. A few could be heard asking “What’s going on,” and “I thought they were done.”
Beca had the instrument tuned and checked. The time – 11:40PM.
Aubrey touched Chloe lightly on the arm to get her attention. “Come over here Chloe, with the rest of the Bellas.”
“I don’t understand, Brey, what’s going on?” the senior said before turning back to Beca.
Chloe could hear the brunette say, “I wanted to sing one more, for you, Chlo.”
Beca hadn’t played much of the intro before Chloe recognized the song. The redhead tried her best to hide the lump in her throat and tears building in her eyes as she listened to Beca pour heart out, and sing, to her…
Don't know much about your life.
Don't know much about your world, but
Don't want to be alone tonight,
On this planet they call earth.
You don't know about my past, and
I don't have a future figured out.
And maybe this is going too fast.
And maybe it's not meant to last,
But what do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say,
What do you say?
I just want to start again,
And maybe you could show me how to try,
And maybe you could take me in,
Somewhere underneath your skin?
What do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say,
What do you say?
And I had my heart beating down,
But I always come back for more, yeah.
There's nothing like love to pull you up,
When you're laying down on the floor there.
So talk to me, talk to me,
Like lovers do.
Yeah walk with me, walk with me,
Like lovers do,
Like lovers do.
What do you say to taking chances,
What do you say to jumping off the edge?
Never knowing if there's solid ground below
Or hand to hold, or hell to pay,
What do you say,
What do you say?
Don't know much about your life
And I don't know much about your world
Beca barely played the last note before the redhead made Aubrey out to be a prophet. Rushing to the brunette and wrapping her in a powerful embrace.
“Breathe. I can’t breathe, Beale.”
The tearful redhead reluctantly let the younger woman’s feet return to the floor.
“Becs. That was amazing! That was really for me?!”
Working very hard to maintain focus, despite the heavenly form pressed against her, Beca replied “It was. I’m so happy you liked it.” The sincerity showed through her beaming smile.
The younger woman took Chloe’s hand before saying “Look, Chlo. We need somewhere to talk? Like right now…” The time was 11:50PM.
“Come on, Red. Let's check for an open room at the end of the hallway.”
“Beca, stop pacing, you’re making me nervous.” Chloe said. “Can you tell me what you wanted to talk about?”
“Chlo, so much has been going on. I don’t know where to even start.” Beca said.
“How about you relax to begin with. Is this about the Bellas, your dad, us?” the redhead asked.
“Yeah, ok. It’s about you and me. I’ve been thinking. A lot. About us. Even when we’re not together, I'm thinking about you. You got any of that going on?” the brunette finally making eye contact with Chloe.
Walking closer to Beca and taking in her stormy blue eyes, Chloe said “Becs, you shouldn’t even have to ask me that. I’ve kind of made that obvious to you. Short of throwing you down and ravaging you, which I considered doing during that song, I’m not sure how much more transparent I can be.”
“Yeah, well, I sort of figured that out. But you know me and relationship stuff. I think I’m getting better at it since I met you. At least I hope I am. I want to.” It was apparent that Beca was struggling to find the right words.
“I think you’re pretty good at relationship stuff, Bec. With me you are."
"Is that something you’d like with me? A relationship, so we can do “ relationship stuff ? Is that what you’re trying to tell me?” A gentle nudge by Chloe followed.
“Uggghhh. Why is this so hard. Why can’t I just say what I want to say to you?” Beca said.
“Don’t worry about the words, Bec. Just go with what you’re feeling. It’s just me and you here. No one will interfere, or judge us, just me and you.” Chloe said.
“That’s just it. What I’m feeling, it has been on a real roller coaster ride lately. Or it was. But it’s not anymore. I’m sure of what my feelings are now. That's really what I wanted to tell you.” The DJ’s posture seemed to relax.
“And? What is it you’re sure of?” Chloe asked.
“That I’m crazy about you Chlo. When I’m not with you, I’m thinking about you. I’m pretty sure you’re my person, Chlo. Some people use the word soulmate. To me, a soulmate is a once in a lifetime experience. You’re that for me, Beale. No one has ever got me the way you do. You seem to like me for who I am, not who you can change me into. Most people annoy me. But you…not so much.”
“Don’t laugh at me, Chlo. This is serious. It’s all so new to me. I haven’t been the same since I met you. I don’t know exactly why, but I’m ok with that now. I like it even. These feelings are all so new to me. But I guess love is new to everyone, at some point in their life.” The brunette finally exhaled.
Taking Beca’s hand, Chloe’s eyes were a bit misty.
“You realize what you just said to me? Is that how you really feel? Bec, do you love me?”
“Yeah, I do. I love you, Chlo. I know it’s soon, but it’s true. That ok with you?” Beca fought to keep the tears from falling from her own eyes.
“Oh, Becs, that is so ok with me. And convenient too. Because I’m in love with you too.”
Beca reached to wipe a stray tear from Chloe’s face. “In that case, can I ask you a personal question, Chlo?”
Her lower lip caught in her teeth, Chloe leaned forward, “I guess so, being as we’re in love and all.” Chloe leaned her forehead against the brunette’s.
“Can I kiss you now? I’ve really been wanting to do that.” Beca said, while cupping the redhead’s cheek in her hands.
“You better, or else I’ll send Flo and her sword after you.” Chloe said
Beca’s heart soared as her lips met Chloe’s. Her heart soaring as it all felt so perfect.
Until Chloe abruptly pulled back, with a look of concern in her eyes.
“Bec, I need to know something. Before we continue this.” Chloe said.
“Anything, Red. What is it?” Beca asked with trepidation in her voice.
“Why now? Is this all because you think I’m the Barden Belle, Bec?” Chloe asked.
“Chlo, I can’t say that it played no part in me telling you how I feel today. I can say it’s in no way the main reason for it. It may have forced me to get in touch with my feelings for you. But aren’t you glad I did that now? Not several months, or even years, down the road?” Beca prayed the older woman understood what she was saying.
“I am. I don’t think I could have waited years for this. That would be torture!” Chloe answered.
“I’ll tell you two things, for now, Chlo. For a while now, every time you would take my hand. I saw something, a vision you might call it. And that was me in front of you. But I couldn’t reach you. When I took your hand, right before we came in here, I saw it again, only it was a much different ending. I was able to reach you. And now I have.” Beca saw Chloe’s beautiful eyes looking misty once again.
“And the other thing?” Chloe managed to say.
“The other thing is even with all I’ve heard, all I’ve read, and all I’ve seen. Some things are just too strange and too strong to be coincidences. My feelings for you are too strong to be a result of anything but love, Chlo.”
“Now, more kissing, please.” Beca was barely able to say before her lips were again pressed against the redhead’s.
The door swung open as an intoxicated Cleopatra stumbled through.
“We just wondered. Oh, ok.” Amy said while turning back toward the door.
“Bloe is a go, pitches!”
Before closing the door Amy cleared her throat to get the attention of the two women clearly unaffected by her presence.
“Before you two go discarding any articles of clothing, or anything else, you might want to know we currently are unable to locate Flo, or the sword! Just saying…”
Reluctantly pulling themselves apart, Chloe took Beca’s hand and led her toward the door. Stopping when the DJ said “Hey, Beale, just to satisfy my own curiosity, being as you’re still here in this world and all that. Is my new girlfriend the Barden Belle?”
“Oh, Becs. Would it make a difference if I was…”
Notes:
Ooops...did I forget something :) If there's enough interest, I do have an Epilogue (or two) planned to post for this story. Someone gave me the idea for a cliffhanger ending. And with the number of times it's been done by many of you (you know who you are), I couldn't help myself (hehe).
About the song Beca sang - "Taking Chances". There are several versions I'm aware of. The first one I saw was on Glee.
As for you - "Anonymous" who left the intriguing Comments for me. I know who you are, and I have plans for you * wink *
Chapter 6: Epilogue (1)
Summary:
The morning after the party...Chloe, will you please answer the question

Chapter Text
Beca opened her eyes as sunlight filled the room. A smile formed as she took in the tousled red hair before her. God Chloe is beautiful, the brunette thought to herself. And that body, surely she wouldn’t mind if I sneak a peak…”
“I can feel you staring, weirdo.” Chloe said, opening her eyes and smiling at Beca. “I didn’t expect you up this early. What’s going on?
“What, I can’t look at my hot girlfriend?” Beca replied while leaning in to kiss the senior.
“Presumptive much, Becs? I don’t remember you properly asking me to be your girlfriend…” Chloe said.” Well, you may have asked, in between shouting out my name what...was it three or four times, Becs?
Beca’s cheeks nearly matched the redhead’s hair, said “You did some shouting of your own there, Beale. In fact, I think you're up one, I never would have guessed the Chloe Beale would have such a filthy mouth. Pretty hot.” The two women now touching foreheads.
“Shut up, you weirdo.” Chloe said while tucking a strand of hair behind the DJ’s ear.
“I’m the weirdo?! You’re the one who wanted to -”
“Beca! Are you going to ask me, or not? “Chloe broke out the pout Beca was powerless against.
“Of course, I am Chlo. Will you answer me this question...am I asking Chloe Beale to be my girlfriend. Or am I asking the Barden Belle?”
“Beca, do you really think I’m a ghostly spirit who’s been hanging around Barden University for 50 Years? You just want to say you made it with a hot ghost, I'm certain."
"You said it wasn’t the main reason you picked last night to tell me you loved me. That it just helped you get in touch with your feeling a little quicker than you have.” Chloe said.
“It wasn’t, Chlo. I’m still confused about some things that happened. Aren’t you?” Beca asked.
“Yeah. I have some questions. And I started having some questions last year. I wasn’t sure why, but last October I became pretty moody. I was anxious a lot of the time. Didn’t have my usual energy.”
“Did you see a doctor?” Beca asked.
“I did. Had a completely physical. They found nothing out of the ordinary. Told me I was fine. Only I knew I wasn’t fine. So, Aubrey helped me do some research. Plus, I talked to Professor Beltran.” Chloe saw the brunette’s eyebrows raise.
“Posen knows? And you talked to Beltran? How come you never told me this?” Beca asked.
“Before last night, you hadn’t told me you talked to the professor.” Chloe responded.
“Touché, Beale. What did she say?”
“She said that what I described to her sounded more like an entity attachment. I wasn’t so sure about that, but after October was over, I felt like myself again. So, I think that's possible.” Chloe looked to Beca for a response.
“What do make of the vision I kept seeing?” Beca asked.
“That I’m so aca-awesome I inspire you to have visions…” the redhead grinned widely. “And that we were totes meant to be together. I think that’s part of why I finally wanted to go to the Halloween Bash as the Belle and her soulmate. Cause I do feel we're soulmates. You said you feel it too, right?”
“Yeah, I did. Didn't believe in that kind of stuff before. But I guess meeting you...changed things for me, Chlo.”
“You guess! You bitc-” Chloe said as she swat at the DJ’s shoulder.
“Ok, ok. I was kidding! Geez, so violent, Red.” Beca said while grabbing Chloe’s hand.
“Look, I don’t know what it meant. But I do know this, I believe I met you when I did for a reason, Bec.”
“And I believe that too, Chlo.” Beca placed a kiss on the redhead’s cheek.
“Maybe I do resemble the Belle in the photo. And maybe you look like her soulmate. None of that changes how I feel about you, Bec.”
“Speaking of photos. How do you explain my half of the photo changing? To a dress I’d never worn?!” Beca said, sitting up.
“I don't know about that one, Becs. Maybe Kimmy Jin slipped it out of your pocket and someone photoshopped it, huh?” Chloe was now avoiding eye contact.
“What are you up to, Chlo. That’s an oddly specific answer…”
“Enough stalling, Mitchell. Are you going to ask, or aren’t you?” Chloe grew impatient.
“And, to clearly answer to your question, Becs, I am not the Barden Belle. I’m just a woman in love…”
“I don’t know what to say, Beale, other than will you please be my girlfriend?
The older woman leaned forward and kissed Beca. The brunette deepened the kiss. Wrapping her arms around Chloe’s waist, she rolled onto her back.
Chloe straddled the DJ, moaning as she kissed the brunette’s neck.
“Chlo. Hey, Chloe.” Beca said, after pulling back a bit.
“Yeah, Becs” Chloe managed to get out.
“Did anyone ever find Flo…”
Notes:
Wow...ok...cross "cliffhanger endings" off the list of things BeChloe readers like :)
I hadn't planned to write this Epilogue this quickly. But some of you are mean! I am absolutely kidding. Still, message received.
Did some strange things happen - yeah. Is Chloe the Barden Belle - no.
You all really are awesome. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. I hope you enjoyed it.
