If You Were Stars, How Bright Would You Shine? [A DreamSMP actor au oneshot collection]

Summary:

Dream tied the ribbon holding his mask, a white, simple and iconic with the drawn smile, behind his head. He did a double take to check if the knot was secure enough, while also checking his prop weapons that were strapped to his belt. They did not jiggle loosely this time thanks to his costume team managing to fix it in time.

Dream waited for his queue, and when he saw it. Heavy boots carried him forward, a grin appeared on his face even when there was for no one to see. He was excited for this, he was prepared, he loved every minute of this.

"Tommy, I've never been your friend."

He made sure his voice was loud enough, powerful enough, and mentally applaud for the co-star who had faked flinching and had the hurtful look on the face.

The lights were on and the cameras were rolling, and so was the show.

-

Dream SMP, but everyone is an actor.

Mainly Dream centric but I could write from any character's POV.
There's only first chapter with headcanons for now, but the rest of the story is for you and me to write. All mistakes you notice are mine.

Chapter 1: Headcanon and possible request

Chapter Text

=========================

Disclaimer from author: While this story based heavily on what actually happened on the Dream SMP. This is only my take on what other character would feel and say. This story is canon-diverse, meaning it takes a different turn from what's real. I do not own any of these characters. All these characters are based on real person, however I'm not writing about them. I will not use their real name in this serie, nor will I romantically shipping any of them together. Any romantic shippings that would be mentioned here is already canon on the DSMP (Sam and Ponk's past relationship, Bad and Skeppy's marriage, Philza and Lady Death, Karl Sapnap and Quackity's poly relationship.).

Request open: More like, comment about what you wanna know more! And I could write a chapter to let you know more about it. The story could be told from any perspective (The actors, the fans, or the workers). I'm working at my own pace on headcanon I already have, but your comment could give me more ideas, more motivaiton to write! Comment here or interact with me on my tumblr: midnight-are-at-it-again.

What I'm ok with writing

  1. Platonic shipping.
  2. Canon on the DSMP, romantic relationship.
  3. Blood. Death. Suicide and Murder. Self-harm and abuse. Implied or graphic desciption.
  4. Character suffering mental illness.

What I'm not ok with writing

  1. Raping.
  2. Sexual scene.
  3. Child glooming, romantic relationship that involves a minor or real people.
  4. Guns.
  5. Death threats.

If there's something specific you're not sure if I'm ok with writing or not, ask away!

Headcanon

Dream team

- Some of them have been shooting together before, but kinda like Marvel’s Avengers casts. All of them met as a whole group for the first time in Manhunt and became good friends since.

- Sapnap always jokes that Dream is like Chris Evans.

- Even though Bad, Ant and Sam were added to the late Manhunt season. They have been working in no name past shootings with Dream, George and Sapnap before.

-----------------------------------

Dre and Sapnap

- Dream was a child star, following his parents’ footsteps. Sapnap’s parents were stunt actors. They went to each other’s place a lot, for Dream to learn doing stunts and basic acting for Sapnap.

-----------------------------------

Manhunt

- Wilbur was actually the original storywriter, before he folded the project and moved on to SMP: Earth. Later the idea for Manhunt was bought and started shooting officially almost a year later.

- The ‘worldbuilding’ happened with the use of advanced technology, allowing the show producer to randomize virtual environments synced with coordination numbers to create a truly random uncharted place for the Manhunt, and for Dream to explore the place without a script of where he’d end up.

- All of them had to film with a wireless VR headset, a motion and impact capturing suit and a cufflink that could register their individual coordination numbers to the virtual world.

[I could go on and explain the technical functioning of the map and the suit but it would take me the time and space I don’t have now. So if asked, I’d make a full chapter dedicated only to explain.]

- Manhunt was truly a wild step into a new direction. Since most part of the shooting was based on improvised acting, you could never know if Dream was going to win or lose in any episode.

- On the action part, due to the realistic nature of the impact capturing suit, the director had to be extremely strict and ready to call off any ongoing shooting that could result in an actor’s injury.

- Everyone had to do their own action scenes, fortunately Manhunt didn’t require everyone to be constantly fighting. Antforst and Awesamdude served in more technical and supporting roles for the hunters.

-----------------------------------

SMP: Dream

- More well known to fans as Dream SMP/DSMP.

- was a long series told from many perspectives. Ironically not from Dream.

- The setting is set in a fantasy theme, with magic and hybrids and enchanted items. Same setting with a lot of SMPs and Manhunt. However, it is a different story in the same universe. As fans spotted a lot of easter eggs to their past movies/series.

- Fans were curious as to why it got an R rating since it started like a story about friendship and boys goofing off. However the seemingly heartwarming story turned into a much darker story over time. They’re not complaining though.

- The FX team is having a field day with Ranboo’s skin, Sapnap’s fire, Bad’s shadow and eyes, Eret’s eyes, Sam’s smoky breath, Fundy’s tail and ears, Quackity and Philza’s wings, Foolish’s height and Techno’s pig-like traits. The list could go on forever.

- The rest is the Makeup department’s work, nevertheless an equal headache.

- If you think their work is hard, the Costume’s will make you pity them.

- XD couldn’t debut as planned due to his costume taking 4 full months to make.

- Dream revealed in an interview that wearing the XD costume was ‘probably worse torture than what [he] had to do during Pandora arc shooting’ and that Mamacita was the most fun to play as.

- They had to buy a Disney license for Callahan to wear his reindeer/Captain America onesies, and for Dream since he quoted from the Lion King during his improv scene with George.

-----------------------------------

The Independence War arc

- Tommy and Tubbo were excited to know they would get to do action, especially with the infamous Dream himself.

- They got spooked by his mask and his character’s scary demeanor Tubbo cried the first time Dream yelled at him.

- To which Dream took it personally his duty to calm the children down and tried bonding with them off screen.

- Only DreamTeam, Punz, Eret and Wilbur knew about the final control room script, so the reaction from Tommy was very genuine and based on improvising. Both Eret and Tommy’s line were cited heavily by fans and movie reviewers as one of the best quotes from the show.

- The view rate on the day the Dual for Independence episode was aired was so high multiple news channels talked about it for a week.

- After that the story focused more on L’Manburg people, allowing DreamTeam to take a break from acting in mentally exhausting roles.

- Dream was also shooting in The Hundred Grand Dual with Technoblade and several episodes of Manhunt during the break.

-----------------------------------

The Hundred Grand Dual

- A movie about two fighters placed on the opposite side of a gladiator ring for entertainment. with 100k reward for the winner.

- They however struck a deal they’d spit the cash no matter the result.

- Dream lost to Technoblade.

- Only revealed to them after the last round only the winner could leave the place alive.

- It was a bittersweet ending for those who cheered for a young man in green, who couldn’t tie with the pink-haired man to save his life, at least he fought till his last breath.

- While some heavily cheered and some regretted in bitterness for the reward Techno never got to share as he promised.

- Twitter went crazy when they watched it for the first time, ever since both main actors had been hyping them up about their upcoming ‘co-acting’ project.

- Both Dream and Techno filmed their reactions and comments to each scene and posted it separately on their social accounts.

- And fans went wild once again when Technoblade debuted on the DSMP in the Pogtopia Rebellion episode.

-----------------------------------

MCC

- Is a seasonal game show. Where they put actors in teams and participate in sport-ish games.

- An opportunity for a lot of actors to meet each other, who would never really interact with each other before since they act in different fields.

- Dream, a well known action actor, for some reason would most likely lose a fighting game against Grian, one of leading actors from SMP: Hermits and Last Life series. Who is more known for his chaotic roles and less for fighting.

- Wilbur once cited the whole Hamilton during a racing game.

-----------------------------------

Tales from the SMP

- Karl is the main storywriter for this, a serie intended to further the lore of DSMP story by exploring into other timelines or places.

- The serie is well known for its glorious shooting locations, such as an underwater city during The City of Mizu, Sir Billiam’s castle during the Masquerade Party, or the In Between castle that could be seen throughout most of the episodes.

- An opportunity for DSMP casts to act as whole new characters within the same old universe. Which makes the spinoff serie interesting as you could see your beloved actors in different shoes, in what they could have been if DSMP happened in another time and place.

- Although a teasing picture of a white hair Dream in a butler suit was unofficially leaked, Dream never made an appearance during the Masquerade Party like he was supposed to, Dream later explained that he got sick and couldn’t show up to the site on the filming day.

-----------------------------------

Pogtopia arc

- Dream’s deflecting to side with JSchlatt was a secret only Wilbur, Dream and Schlatt knew.

- The casts and writers never reveal why that didn’t count as Dream’s betrayal to Technoblade since the latter sided with Pogtopia during the war.

- JSchlatt was only credited as a guest appearance.

- Fans were excited during the reveal of Philza, debuting as a winged hybrid and Wilbur’s father, and shocked when Wilbur revealed himself to be the traitor Dream had been foreshadowing a few episodes before he changed sides.

- Wilbur later gave an interview telling his fans he’s taking a break from filming to focus on his music project and that Dream and Tommy would be taking a leading role in story writing for the next arc to come.

-----------------------------------

Exile arc

- Boy oh boy this one was truly a special story.

- Mainly focused on Tommy as the boy was separated and psychologically tortured and Dream as the man who spiraled further and further down his villain path.

- Dream would always make sure Tommy felt alright after shooting, while Tommy had to stop Dream from going full on dad mode by ensuring he could separate what was real and what wasn’t. Tommy did come up with the idea of getting his character tortured after all.

- Dream got a lot of hate from people who didn’t approve of his character’s actions, but put it all on Dream as a person.

- Dream and Wilbur publicly stated all of them knew what Dream the character did wasn’t right and no one on the DSMP would support this kind of action in real life.

-----------------------------------

The Butcher Army arc

- was a sub-plot focusing on Tubbo, Quackity, and Fundy planning their revenge on Technoblade who destroyed L’Manburg alongside Dream during the Pogtopia war episode.

- Happened during Exile so viewers who couldn’t watch the arc, which could be triggering to them, could follow DSMP story with less heavy story.

- The trio had to practice more action since they would have to shoot with Technoblade.

- Dream and Technoblade dropped by their classes to help them sometimes.

-----------------------------------

The Eggpire/Bloodvine arc

- was another sub-plot that was aired during Exile.

- Fans were confused about the connection it has to every story, hoping it could unfold eventually.
