What you needed

Summary:

Shuichi really did love his boyfriend, but you just can't fix some things. He thinks that's okay sometimes.

Notes:

Hello again lovelies, this is kind of like the prologue(?), which is kind of what I feel like doing. Going backwards and in love no matter what.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Shuichi rose from his bed from the obnoxious amount of texts making his phone buzz repeatedly beside him. He was a deep sleeper, but he can still be woken up.
He had taken a nap since three, and it's about five now. Oops.

Picking it up, he glanced at the amount of texts his boyfriend has sent him. Most of them revolving around him breaking up with Shuichi because he was annoyed, being mad at himself he did that, being sad he said that, and then demanding Shuichi came over because he was sad.

Smiling, he left his bed in less than a rush, but just as excited. He knew he'd get a lecture about absolutely nothing, but oh the joys of hearing his boyfriends voice pointed only towards him.

Upon arriving, the door was already open for him. Inviting himself inside, he was accustomed to the small sobs that came from the couch as he closed the door behind himself.

"Hello love. Are you alright?" He asked as he walked his way over, peeking over the couch to see Kokichi holding the shirt Shuichi had left one night from their private activities. He smiled softly, before wiping it off his face before his boyfriend took it the wrong way.

"You're so stupid!" Kokichi yelled at him, clutching the shirt tightly, "Why the fuck would you b-bother asking me if I'm okay?!"

He laughed at the anger in his boyfriends voice. "Sorry, instinct. Who pissed you off this time?"

He sat down on the other side of the couch, waiting until Kokichi wanted to crawl over to him to touch him. Kokichi liked his space sometimes, and he knew that and kept it in mind so he didn't get another scar.

"Everyone! I fucking hate all of you!" Kokichi screamed, throwing Shuichis shirt at him suddenly to wrap his arms around himself, "Fuck you! Leaving your shit here like you own the place, you're such a fucking bitch!"

Shuichi smiled softly, picking the shirt up and examining it. Well, Kokichi hadn't even bothered to wash the thing, so it wasn't like he cared all that much.
"I'm sorry my love. What happened?"

"Ugh, my–"

Kokichis voice cracked as more tears welled in his eyes, making them sparkly brightly in the distant light of his lamp. It was pretty dark, but they both didn't really like light so it was always preferable.

"Your?"

He opened his arms as Kokichi shot towards him, shoving his face into his arm to hide his tears. He wrapped an arm around him, allowing him to continue.

"My ex boyfriend texted me again saying he missed me. I told him so many times I have someone new and he always comes back to remind me that he owns me–"

Shuichi couldn't help the laugh that bubbled in his throat and spilled over his lips. He couldn't hold it back, the way Kokichi sounded so heartbroken over something like that. He was good.

"Why are you laughing you fuckface! He scares me, he abused me–"

"Kokichi."

The boy quieted immediately, Shuichi turning over to press a soft kiss into his forehead.

"You know he doesn't own you. People don't own each other, they never have and they never can. Listen to me, he can't ever touch you again, and if he does I'll get him thrown in jail real quick." Shuichi cooed softly, brushing Kokichis snarled hair with his fingers. He hasn't brushed it in a while, Shuichi could tell he was lacking in self care by how greasy it was.

He smiled at how messy his boyfriend looked.

"You can't fix everything with your job Shuichi, he abused me for years–"

"I can kill him."

Kokichis voice quieted again, before he bowed his face into his boyfriends arm.
"You could."

Shuichi laughed sweetly as he gently wiped the tears from Kokichis cheeks after picking the boys face up off of his arm. "I don't understand, you know I don't, but that doesn't mean I have to sit here and let him keep treating you like this." He hummed, feeling Kokichis hands tighten on him, "Block his number, and if he comes back I can promise you I'll take care of him."

"Fuck, you just don't get it!" Kokichi cried harder against his gentle hand, his nails digging into his boyfriends arms, "You never fucking get it! Why did I ever date someone as fucking useless as you are?!"

Shuichi swiped Kokichi cheek once more. "What did you say to him?"

"I-I lied and said I missed him, I think I miss him Shuichi, I think I don't love you anymore–"

Another laugh, he really tried to hold this one in this time however he failed again. It really was funny.

"My love, do you hear yourself?"

"Of course I–"

"I don't love you anymore Kokichi. We're breaking up."

The crying stopped, suddenly his head lifting from his shoulder with a look of pure shock and confusion written on his features. "W-What?"

"I said I don't love you anymore."

"You can't just copy my words–"

"I'm still in love with Kaede. I'm sorry I lied to you."

Kokichis mouth trembled, and Shuichi stoked his head gently again. He let it sink in, to let the words registered in his boyfriend's brain. He watched the features twist from confusion to soft betrayal and regret.

He toyed with the boys purple hair gently.
"Did that hurt to hear Kokichi?"

"Yeah.."

"Did it burn? Did you feel your lungs stop taking in air?"

"Mhmm..."

He laughed again.
"You still love me, and I still love you." Shuichi assured, turning over to let his gross, not showered, dirty clothed boyfriend lay on top of his clean laundry and his freshly showered skin.

He didn't mind, he liked Kokichi when he wasn't pretending.

"I still love you Kokichi. You know you still love me. No ex boyfriend is going to get in our way, no one can take you from me, and I don't want anyone else the way I want you."

Kokichi laid down, rubbing his eyes and finishing out the sobs left in his chest until he was done. Shuichi would have stayed there all night if he needed to.

"You're so stupid..." Kokichi murmured after a few minutes, raising up before a finger was pressed to his lips.

"What are the magic words."

"Ugh. I love you, now let me kiss your stupid ugly face."

"Haha, I love you too."

The kiss was deep, tender and loving, and happened for a few moments.

Shuichi knew he didn't fix anything as he felt the knots in his hair. Kokichi would come back to this inner war later when he was alone, he'd beat himself up until he was the only one who could kick himself while on the ground. He knew Kokichi, and he knew this would never be over.

"Let's get you a shower, you're smelly."

"What?! Fuck you Saihara!"

"Ohh, last names now? Fuck you too Oma."

"..You're so annoying I wish I could kill you."

"You'd miss me too much."

Though, he knew the boyfriend story was a lie. Something else was bothering him, he knew it had nothing to do with his ex. Kokichi just wanted to hear him tell him he loved him, he wanted to be convinced until he couldn't think otherwise.

Shuichi was willing to convince him as long as he wanted, day and night he'd remind Kokichi how much he was loved. He hoped one day, Kokichi would be able to tell him what was really bothering him without the gimmicks.

"Gross, you're so boney!"

"Kokichi, I think you're more boney than me."

"Nuh-uh!"

"Mhm. How about we go out to dinner, somewhere nice and secluded."

"Sounds like it'd ruin my night."

"So the usual?"

"Duh.."

He knew he might never be able to convince his boyfriend of his feelings. He knew Kokichi would continue to stay up crying all night, neglecting himself until he couldn't recognize himself when he looked in the mirror.

He smiled down at his boyfriend soaked in water. That's okay, he'd always he here to put his picture back together until he was happy to see himself again, and maybe they could stare into the broken mirror together until the shards fell into place once more.

Kokichi smiled up at him when he noticed.

"You look so weird when you smile Shuichi. You're too giggly for someone who just had their boyfriend cry on them."

"You're lies are just so hilarious."

"I wasn't lying!"

"Mhm, I'm sure your boyfriend from highschool is after you."

"Maybe he is! Ugh, you're a bad boyfriend."

"I think I'm the only one in existence able to handle you though."

"Hmph."

"Am I lying?"

"Probably not. I sometimes wonder why you do it."

"Because I love you."

"...Jackass." Kokichi huffed as he turned around with his arms crossed, a pout on his swollen face. "Wash my back."

Shuichi snatched up the vanilla body wash. "Magic words?"

"...I love you too."

Notes:

I feel like I've made Shuichi too apathetic, but I guess it fits! Partners know best.

Might keep writing these for funsies, since I write them in about half an hour/ an hour with no pausing and no revising. Welcome to my raw, late night/early morning writing. 😊

EDIT — SORRY TO ANYONE WHO SAW THIS UNDER ALL MEDIA TYPES 😓
