Opprotunity

Summary:

Thomas gets an email from the principal and suddenly everyone has quite a few things to consider.

Chapter Text

It was a strange thing, but Roman was pretty sure Patton and Remus arguing was actually a sign of progress.  He had walked past them in the living room having an argument that seemed very tense, but neither of them were screaming at each other.  He went quickly into the kitchen lest he risk getting involved without having any breakfast first, and found Logan by the coffee machine.

“What’s up with Pat and Re?” he asked, pulling out a mug to get his own cup when Logan was done.

“I think they’re having a disagreement about an idea,” he said.  “I’d be keeping a closer eye on it, but they both seem to be trying very hard to be respectful, and I actually think they’re succeeding.”

“Huh.  Neat,” Roman said.  “They’re arguing about an idea?”

Logan nodded.

“I’ll probably head in after breakfast to see what they’re talking about,” Roman said.  “This is my area too, after all.”

Logan smiled at him.  “I think that’s a good plan,” he said.  “I’m glad you’re starting to contribute to things, Roman.”

“Teach,” Roman said in mock exasperation.

“I mean it,” Logan said.  “What would be the point of listening to Creativity more if you were not included as part of that?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Roman said.  “I just don’t know if you quite get it.  You’ve been able to talk to Thomas for most of your life.  Even Remus has, though Thomas didn’t listen to him the way he should have.  It’s hard to think about the fact that I can just bring something up to Thomas now.”

Logan nodded.  “That makes sense, and no one is going to rush you,” he said.  “So long as you understand we don’t expect you to keep your ideas to yourself.”

“I know you don’t, don’t worry,” Roman said, and he moved to finish making his breakfast.

And apparently things were really progressing in a really good way, because when he went to check on Patton and Remus after he ate he saw both of them had calmed down considerably and were going over the idea with a much more friendly tone in their voices.

From what they told Roman, they’d been having a disagreement they’d been having about the planning they were doing for next year.  They’d ended on a compromise, and were going to leave some of the fun days up to the students to decide at the beginning of the year.  Roman smiled and said that was a great idea, and that was that for the argument.

The rest of the day was pretty slow, and Roman ended up sitting in the living room for most of the afternoon and writing some notes on ideas he’d planned.  He’d been leaning a little more into science fiction since coming over here and getting so much inspiration from class, but all of the plans they’d set up with Joan had pulled him back to his roots, and now he was working on a play he’d been slacking on.  Remus and Logan were tossing more of the schedule back and forth across a large plate of cookies, refreshed every now and then by Patton, who was baking them in the kitchen.

It wasn’t strictly necessary to be planning the next year this soon, but Logan liked punctuality, and if he didn’t insist on doing it early, Thomas would absolutely put it off until the last minute.  Roman commented every now and then too, and was probably patting himself on the back for his multitasking skills slightly more than he needed to.

Logan called the planning off around three in the afternoon, and then they all put on an analytical video for Thomas’ new favorite cartoon (it was Logan’s turn to pick) and settled down for the afternoon as Patton finished baking cookies.

Roman wasn’t expecting anything to interrupt their viewing, but about midway through the video, they were all alerted to the fact that Thomas got an email from the principal.  They wouldn’t have been alerted to that if it wasn’t important, and sure enough, a second later he felt the tug that meant Thomas was summoning him, and by the look on everyone else’s faces, they felt it too.

They all exchanged a glance before sinking out.  Roman rose up in front of Thomas, who was sitting on the couch looking at his laptop.

“Hello, Thomas,” Logan said.  “Did you need us for something?  What’s going on?”

“I got an email from Principal Bailey,” Thomas said, sounding a mix of surprised and rather excited.  “Or, she sent it out to a bunch of people, but I was one of them.”

“Is something going on?” Logan asked, stepping towards Thomas.  “Is there something we should be worried about?”

“No, I don’t think so.  It’s more of an opportunity,” Thomas said.

“Oh?” Logan asked.

“Well, according to this, Principal Bailey is thinking about putting together a drama club, and she’s wondering who can help.”

Roman’s eyes widened.  “Really?”

“We can!” Remus burst out, rushing forward to look at the email.  “We can, we can, let’s do it!”

“Woah, hold on,” Logan said, pulling Remus back.  “Let’s think about this first.  What does the email say?”

“It’s nothing official yet,” Thomas said.  “It really just seems to be asking who might be interested in putting something like that together.”

“Yeah, and we are!  Aren’t we?” Remus exclaimed, turning to Roman, who was starting to feel very excited himself.

He nodded.  “We are, yes, let’s do it,” he said, turning back to Thomas.  Remus grinned at the support and did the same, starting to bounce on his feet a little.

“Okay, hang on,” Logan said firmly.  “Let’s slow down.  There’s a lot of other things to consider.  We haven’t participated in show business professionally.  We won’t be doing anything of the sort until this summer.  Would we have enough experience to know what we’re doing?”

“If they’re just asking for who’s interested right now I doubt anything’s going to be happening this year,” Roman said, waving the question off.  “And we’ll be doing stuff this summer that’ll help us learn how this could work.  Plus, we have Joan to ask for tips!”

“Joan has other responsibilities, and so do we,” Logan said.  “Our class comes first.”

“I think I’d have to agree with that,” Patton said hesitantly.  “Our job is to teach our kiddos.  That has to come before anything else.”

“This still has to do with the kids!” Remus said.  “We might not even be doing this alone!  There could be other people interested too who would be shouldering the work with us!”

Roman glanced at Thomas, who understandably looked torn.  “I still think we should say we’re interested,” he said to him, and Thomas glanced up at him.  “You said it yourself, nothing is official yet.  We can weigh all the pros and cons later, let’s say we’re potentially interested.  What’s the harm in that?”

Thomas seemed to consider his statement, and when Roman glanced around he saw Logan and Patton doing the same.

“I think that’s reasonable,” Thomas said finally.

“Thomas,” Logan said, still looking unsure.

“He’s right Logan, nothing’s decided yet,” Thomas said.  “A lot could change before this actually becomes more than an idea.  Let’s say we’re open to it.”

Logan sighed, not looking completely happy with the idea, but still willing, which was all Roman needed.

“Alright,” Logan said eventually, and Patton nodded next to him.

Remus let out a happy cheer and grabbed Roman’s hands to start pulling him around the living room.  Roman was quickly sucked into the excitement too, and before long Thomas was replying to the email and they were both heading off into the Imagination to shoot ideas and hopes back and forth.  Roman, for one, could see absolutely no way this could backfire.  Yep.  Only good things from this.
