Work Text:

Lana was somewhat concerned.

Her little sister’s timer was going to go off in about 20 minutes, but all Ema seemed to care about was convincing Lana to let her come along to the crime scene she was supposed to be investigating.

“I don’t care!” Ema cried. “I don’t need a soulmate anyway, I want to see the forensic specialists up close!”

Lana shook her head in defeat.

“Well, I suppose there’s no fighting fate. I guess you’ll be meeting your soulmate at a murder scene.”

“Yes!!!” Ema pumped her fist and sprinted out to Lana’s car. “What are you waiting for? Let’s go!” she yelled.

Lana got in the car, wondering what else she had really expected to happen. ‘I suppose her soulmate will be someone as interested in the science behind murders as she is’ Lana thought with morbid fondness. She looked over at her sister, who was beaming excitedly.

The drive was short, and Lana could feel her sister’s passion in the way she excitedly talked about how much she was looking forward to finally seeing a real forensic investigation. Lana smiled softly.

Ema’s timer went off the second she laid eyes on the body of the victim, and Lana’s heart sank.

But Ema’s eyes were bright as she looked on at the investigation with fascination. She didn’t even notice that her timer had gone off. She dashed out of the car and ran to the scientist currently examining the body.

“Ema, hold on!” Lana called after her. “You can’t just run into the middle of a crime scene!”

“What’s that do? What are you doing now? Can I help?” Ema asked the woman questions rapid fire.

“Ema!”

“Don’t worry, it’s fine,” the woman assured Lana. “It’s great to see someone so young who shares my passion for forensics.” She smiled and turned to Ema. “Want to help?”

Ema emphatically shook her head yes, her eyes sparkling brightly with anticipation.

“Alright take this here...” Ema listed to her explanation with delight written plainly on her face.

Ema still didn’t even seem to have noticed that her timer went off.

Lana shook her head and smiled fondly at her little sister. The man himself didn’t even seem to be her soulmate, really. It was, rather morbidly, the opportunity his corpse provided her to start her career in forensic science. Her sister was an odd one, Lana had to say. But Lana’s earlier concerns had vanished at the sight of her sister’s pure glee at getting to experience a forensic investigation for the first time, and she knew Ema would make a brilliant forensic scientist one day.

As long as Ema was happy, Lana would be too.
