Knit One, Purl One, Repeat

Summary:

Minimus finds a chest full of intricately knitted blankets and things in Megatron’s room and finds out his lover has a few interesting hobbies and he wants to learn how to do them too.

Notes:

So a friend shared a Twitter post of MiniMegs with Minimus knitting and someone mentioned how large the needles were and someone else said they were Megs and then this happened… so thank you TF Dungeon Discord server for giving me this little brain worm xD
I wrote this in an hour and did not even read it over myself to check for errors… so sorry in advance for any mistakes xD

Work Text:

Megatron doubted anything could’ve prepared him for walking in on Minimus going through that one particular chest. There was only one other mech in the entire universe who knew about that chest other than Megatron himself. He was honestly surprised it had made it all the way through the war.

Still, the sight of Minimus kneeling in front of the opened subspace chest, half a knitted blanket spilling out around his frame, delicate digits kneading the soft fabric had every joint in Megatron’s frame locking up in an instant. He could only stare at the sight, even as Minimus turned around and gave him a gentle smile.

“Oh, there you are,” he said as if he wasn’t still pulling the most recent addition of the chest out into his lap. “I got a bit cold and went looking for a blanket until you came back. This one is very soft and warm.”

The last bit was said a little distractedly and Minimus went back to kneading the blanket as he pulled the last of it out. The dark green and brown blanket looked good against his plating and Megatron couldn’t stop staring at the smaller mech. Minimus stood up, collecting the blanket into his arms and turned, finally looking up at Megatron with a slight frown.

“Are you alright, Megatron?” Something about the tone in Minimus’ voice snapped Megatron out of his slight panic.

“Fine. I’m fine,” he managed to get out.

“That’s good, did you still want to cuddle? That is what we discussed earlier for this date, after all.” Minimus said matter of factly, walking towards Megatron who instinctively stepped out of the minibot’s way so he could leave the berth room and wander into the living room.

“Yes.” He was on a weird autopilot and just followed after his lover.

It wasn’t until after they got situated on the couch that Megatron started to relax. There was no way Minimus Ambus knew his secret, just that he had what looked like a very expensive knitted blanket in his room. Well, not just the one, he had an entire subspace generator nearly filled with them in his berth room.

Minimus was still petting and kneading at the blanket, brows furrowed in thought. “Megatron?” He started. “Where did you get this? I did not know anyone had started making these again and I don’t think this is from before the war, the yarn is still too soft for it to be that old.”

Megatron’s processors froze again. He should lie. He should tell Minimus it was a gift from Soundwave or something. That was entirely believable. “I made it,” he blurted out and then immediately flushed.

Minimus turned around and looked up at him with wide optics. “You made this?”

“Yes. I knit.” Somehow the blush only got stronger. It felt a bit like his face was going to melt off.

Minimus’ optics widened in awe. “Oh that is wonderful. This is wonderful. Do you still do it?”

“Yes, I picked it up shortly after the war started. It kept me busy when there wasn’t anything else to do.”

The smile on Minimus’ face was so warm and welcoming. It only made Megatron blush harder somehow. “That is a good use of your down time and I am glad you still find time to do it. It is a good hobby.” The minibot sat for a minute quietly, digits roaming over the woven yarn. “Would you teach me?”

Megatron blinked his optics and restarted his audials because there was no way he could’ve heard that right. “Pardon?”

“Would you teach me? I have no hobbies at the moment, not really. As much as I am loath to admit it, Rodimus was correct when he said I needed more hobbies than writing about safety sprinkler romances.” Minimus had a small blush on his face after he finished and Megatron felt like smacking himself in the face.

If anyone could understand having unusual hobbies or hobbies that didn’t really align with what others assumed of you, it would be Minimus.

The grey mech smiled down at his lover. “Of course, I would love to teach you.”

Minimus beamed up at him.

“Is this how it’s done?” Minimus asked, holding up needles for Megatron’s inspection.

The larger mech narrowed his optics to look over the small stitches. “Yes, that’s correct. They look good.”

“Thank you,” Minimus beamed up at him. His smile was bright for a moment before he bent back over the row of garter stitches he was working on. Megatron smiled at the back of his helm.

“You know, I am always amazed when Rodimus comes up with a plan out of thin air and it manages to work.” Minimus said into the quiet.

“Mmm, they usually don’t,” Megatron responded. He glared at his work, trying to remember where in the pattern he was.

“This one should not have worked.” Minimus muttered into his own yarn, brows furrowed as his digits quickly moved yarn from one needle to the next. Megatron wanted to know what sorcery Minimus worked to be able to purl that quickly.

“It shouldn’t have worked, but Brainstorm was involved so it shouldn’t be as shocking as it is.”

Minimus paused and looked up at Megatron with one brow raised. “Just because Brainstorm was there does not mean anything Rodimus came up with should have worked out.”

Megatron shrugged one shoulder, finally figuring out where he was and slowly got back to work, counting out the stitches as he made them. “I’ve just noticed Rodimus has a better outcome when Brainstorm is involved with it. That’s all.”

The small green and white mech made a noise that was somewhere between a snort and a sigh of resignation and went back to his work. Megatron was glad suddenly that Minimus had discovered his chest of knitted items and wanted to learn more about them all. They’d since had to get another chest just to store yarn because Minimus had a thing for grabbing multiple skeins at a time whenever they found a store that sold yarn. He kept insisting that they couldn’t always go back to those outposts or whatever to get more if they needed it so they might as well get as much as they could when they were there. It was getting a little out of hand, but Megatron wasn’t about to stop him. It just meant they’d get to relax on their couch and knit together more often.
