Chapter 1: Sleepy

Chapter Text

It was night when Zonic finally arrived home.

After locking the front door quietly behind him, Zonic took his zone cop helmet off and placed it down on the table in the living room before switching the laptop on.

The elite officer may have come home, but that didn't mean his work was done, he still had some things he needed to do.

The harsh light of the laptop screen stung Zonic's eyes as he sat before it at the table and began to get to work on updating various police files and such from the comfort of his home.

He yawned and struggled to keep his eyes open. The cop was tired. So very tired.

But he couldn't rest until the work was done.

Two hours had passed and Zonic hadn't moved from his position at the laptop. His back was hunched, his fingers tapped on the keyboard non-stop, and his eyes remained fixated on the harsh screen as he read line after line after line of text upon texts.

Since he was too carried away in his work, he never heard the bedroom door open, and he never heard the sound of soft footsteps working their way across the room to him.

"Hey."

Snapping out of his trance, Zonic looked out of the corner of his eyes and saw that he now had a tanned peach arm draped over his right shoulder and on his left shoulder, someone was resting their muzzle on him as another arm slipped around his waist.

"Scourge, what are you doing out of bed so late?"

The ex criminal smirked and nuzzled the side of his head against his husband's, "I can ask you the same thing."

"I've got work that needs to be done."

"Nah. This police crap can wait."

"Oh I wish." Zonic uncharacteristically replied for a moment before sighing, "It needs to be done or else I won't be able to rest."

"Oh come on. It won't harm anyone if you have a rest and come back to it later."

"I really can't do that. I have to-" he stopped and yawned before he began typing again, "I have to work. As an elite officer of the zone cops, I can't let a thing like sleepiness get in the way of my duties."

Scourge watched his husband's fingers glide over the keyboard, occasionally going to click on the mouse now and again before reaching over and taking the zone cop's hands in his.

"You may be an elite zone cop, but you need to sleep, y'know? Missing sleep ain't good for ya. Besides, if yer knackered, you'll start making mistakes, and you don't wanna go making mistakes on this police shite, now do ya?"

Zonic leaned back into his husband and rested his head against Scourge's. "No, I don't. But can't I just type up what I can now and clean it up in the morning?"

The king nuzzled Zonic gently and whispered, "Look, just come to bed, will ya? I hate seein' you overworking yourself."

"Just give me a few more minutes. I won't be long."

"Bollocks. You've been at this for hours. I really fuckin' doubt it's a 'few more minutes'. Come on babe."

With that, Scourge gently pulled Zonic up before reaching over to put the laptop in sleep mode.

"Scourge... I can do this."

"Zon, you can hardly stand, babe."

The zone cop wobbled slightly and looked at the king with tired emerald eyes and yawned again.

"Here."

Scourge gently picked up his husband and held him bridal style, then carried him off to their room.

'’S... Scourge... I can do it.... I can do it... Just a few more minutes."

Zonic sleepily mumbled as the king sat him down on the soft mattress and began removing his golden zone cop shoulder pauldrons.

"You can do it tomorrow."

Scourge then set about removing Zonic's blue zone cop gauntlets as gently as he could before setting them down on the bedside table alongside the pauldrons.

"You'd think you were some sort of knight rather than a cop with all these metal armour pieces." Scourge whispered as he removed the cop's metallic belt.

The zone cop stretched as Scourge attended to his boots, but during his stretch he pulled a muscle and let out a groan of pain.

"Go easy Zon. You've been sitting in an awkward position for hours, so I'm not surprised yer tense."

With a gentle push, Scourge made Zonic lie down on the mattress before he lay himself down besides him and pulled the blanket up over them both.

"I know Zon, you've still got that skintight red uniform on, but to be honest with you babe I'm too tired to figure out how you take that thing off. Anyway, it won't kill you to sleep in it."

Scourge grumbled as he made himself comfortable against the pillows, then moved Zonic, so the cop was lying on his husband's chest.

"You're comfy."

The cop sleepily told the other as he snuggled closer to him.

"I know. You've told me that countless times."

Scourge rested his muzzle on top of Zonic's head and began to stroke the ocean blue quills of his husband softly, "g'night, Zon."

"Goodnight, my king. I love you."

Zonic replied sleepily before drifting off.

"Heh. I know you can't hear me cuz you're sleeping, but.... I love you too. A great deal, y'know?"

Scourge began, as he continued brushing the ocean blue quills, "I know I don't say it often, but yeah. I love ya. Even if you do get on my nerves sometimes and think you know better than me."

He laughed quietly and stopped stroking Zonic's quills to look at the golden ring on his hand before returning to brushing his husband's quills.

"Without you?"

He whispered

"My life really would be shit."

Zonic simply stirred a little in his sleep, making Scourge smile

"I'm glad we met all those years ago, cuz look what it led to. Ain't life strange, eh?"

The king placed a tender kiss atop Zonic's head and lay back against the pillows again, holding Zonic against him as he felt sleep take over, and soon enough, he was in a deep sleep with his husband in his arms.
