You Helped Me (Wangxian)

Summary:

Two high schoolers who've(not properly at least) never interacted before... no matter how badly they wanted to.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are two sophomores in high-school who go through the challenges of figuring out their feelings for each other, that seem to grow stronger by the day, after being forced together by Wei Wuxians misfortune.

One with ADHD, one who's Autistic.... What an interesting pair.

Chapter 1: Part One

Notes:

I edited this chapter so that it makes a little more sense. I also hope I caught any spelling and maybe some grammar errors that I made. You don't have to reread if you don't want to, you won't miss out on any information really, I just added a couple more things so it flows better.

Chapter Text

It’s a nice and peaceful day at Gusu, the birds were chirping, the sun was high in the sky with a gentle breeze blowing. All the classes were calm, only the teachers giving lectures, kids asking questions, and the occasional chatting happening while work was going on. Except in one classroom…

Lan Wangji looked in the direction the paper came from and his eyes landed on Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian smiles at him and makes gestures trying to show Lan Wangji that he wrote on it and he should unfold and read it.

Lan Wangji just looks away, ignoring Wei Wuxian.

“Wei Wuxian, stop it and pay attention.” Jiang Cheng quietly scolds while his brother was messing around with Nie Huaisang.

“Aiyah, A-Cheng, I’m trying to pay attention. It’s just that this lesson’s so boring. Why can’t Old Man Lan make it more interesting?” Wei Wuxian whined.

“Don’t call me that! And I don’t care, not only are you not paying attention, you’re distracting me, too. So, shut it.”

After Jiang Cheng said that, Wei Wuxian turned around with an annoyed expression on his face. Having to pay attention was boring, hard, and sometimes painful. It’s actually quite hard for him to pay attention in class, no matter how hard he tries. Plus, if he really can’t or forces himself to, he’s in pain most of the time and it would have been better if didn’t pay attention at all. He has ADHD, and although he struggles to give his attention to the class everyday, he still manages to pass this class. Just barely.

While trying to listen to Lan Qiren without falling asleep or zoning out, Wei Wuxian’s eyes wander around the room and land on Lan Wangji.

The top student in class, an all A student, always sits in front and doesn't cause any trouble.

Wei Wuxian doesn’t know much about him but always found him interesting. The only things he knew about him were that he was Lan Qiren’s nephew, the favorite in class, never got in trouble because he was always quiet and paid attention, and that he was Autistic.

He found his eyes drifting to him a lot when he had a difficult time focusing in class. Sometimes Lan Wangji will meet his eyes if he notices, to which Wei Wuxian will smile and wave. Lan Wangji would then turn away and act as if he never saw him. But Wei Wuxian swears he saw his ears turn red one time but thought it was just his imagination.

Wei Wuxian suddenly gets an idea. Not a good one, but an idea. Ok, it’s not really a new one. He did it just a little while ago. His first note read ‘Hey, how was your day?’, but sadly, Lan Wangji had ignored it. So, he decides to give it another try.

He searches through his bag for his pencil case, which has lost all its pencils by the third week of school, and gets a stack of post-it’s out.

He takes one off the stack and writes a little message: “Hey Lan Wangji, this is Wei Wuxian, how are you?

He thinks of folding it into a paper plane and throwing it to him but thinks it’s too much work and just crumples it and throws it on his desk.

It bounced right on his desk, Wei Wuxian never knew he had such a good aim. But again, Lan Wangji ignored it. Seeming to know who it was from, he didn’t even spare him a glance this time.

With a defeated expression, Wei Wuxian thinks about what he can do about this. He figured throwing another paper was risky, he couldn’t risk getting caught Lan Qiren throwing papers. He just figured he’d ask people to pass it to Lan Wangji up front.

So he makes up another note with boxes that say yes and no to the question: “Wanna be Friends?”

He folds twice into a square and passes it to Nie Huaisang whispering, “Pass this to Lan Wangji.”

Nie Huaisang gives him a look making it seem like Wei Wuxian was crazy for even thinking this idea. But nonetheless, he nods and passes it to the person next to him saying the same thing.

As the note gets passed through the class with a bunch of whispers and bewildered looks, it finally gets passed to the person in back of Lan Wangji who looks scared. Eventually, they gathered up the courage to tap Lan Wangji’s shoulder, to which he moved like the person's touch had burned him, and gave him the note.

After he opened and read the note, he quickly picked his head up and looked towards Wei Wuxian knowing it was him who sent the note.

Wei Wuxian smiled and waved at him for the second time that day, and again, Lan Wangji didn’t respond to his antics and just turned around.

Feeling defeated, Wei Wuxian gave up and decided to doodle in his notebook.

After a while, he gets a tap on his shoulder from Nie Huaisang returning the folded note he handed him five minutes ago.

With a shocked face he mouths a ‘thank you’ to him. He looks in Lan Wangji’s direction only to see him paying attention to the lesson.

He excitedly, but carefully, opens the note. And although he should have expected it, he is shocked to see the ‘no’ box checked off instead of ‘yes’.

“Really?!” He exclaimed.

“Shhh!” Jiang Cheng shushed while hitting his arm.

The whole class was looking in his direction after the outburst. And that included Lan Qiren. With a sheepish expression on his face he sunk into his seat and let out a little nervous chuckle while maintaining eye contact with Lan Qiren.

“WEI WUXIAN!” Lan Qiren screamed. “Why are you not paying attention and interrupting my class?”

“I was paying attention.” Wei Wuxian blatantly lied. I mean, if someone was really listening to a lesson, why would they yell ‘really’ in the middle of the teacher's sentence?

“Then what was saying just now?” Lan Qiren questioned.

“Ummm…” Wei Wuxian couldn’t answer the question. Everyone knew he couldn’t, but no one tried to tell him the answer.

“Wangji, what was I just discussing?”

He wrote something about the structuring of paragraphs and themes on the board. Wei Wuxian didn’t know, he wasn’t really looking. He was more focused on why Lan Wangji was writing on the board instead of just saying it out loud.

It was really confusing for him. He usually didn’t talk in class, but Wei Wuxian knew he could. He has talked in class before. Wei Wuxian didn’t want to assume but he thinks he saw something on how some Autistic people have non-verbal days, but he would have to look more into that.

“Thank you Wangji, you may sit now.” Lan Qiren said. “Since you don’t want to pay attention in my class, you can step out.” He directed Wei Wuxian.

“Ok…” Wei Wuxian said while getting up out of his seat.

He packed his stuff up by just stuffing his notebook and pencil case back into his bag.

On his way out the door with the whole class's eyes on him except for one, Lan Qiren told him, “And please come back and see me after the period is over.”

Nodding his head, Wei Wuxian finally opened the door and walked out the classroom wondering what he would do for the remaining thirty minutes he has until he has to be back.
