Summary
Dinah Barnes' parents were murdered and their bodies left in the town square of Mystic Falls for everyone to see. Despite knowing that the Sheriff knows about the supernatural and having friends who were supernatural, no one can figure out who killed them. There's no evidence, no witnesses, nothing. Two people were murdered in the middle of town and no one could figure it out.
Luckily for Dinah, her aunt, uncle and cousin from California are already on their way. After the funeral, she is officially under the guardianship of her Aunt Lucy and Uncle Steven and leaves with them and her cousin Selena back to Beacon Hills. Dinah celebrates her seventeenth birthday without her parents for the first time.
But all is not as well as it seems. On the day before the first day of school, Stefan Salvatore shows up on her doorstep. To talk, he says, and catch up. She closes the door on him, not seeing that he's a little too urgent in the way he's speaking.
Then all breaks loose and Dinah has to face the truth that she can't ever leave the supernatural behind because her parents' deaths weren't all they seemed. A curse is hanging over the Barnes Family and it has its eyes locked on Dinah and Selena.
