Work Text:
When Kate agreed to help Yelena free the remaining Widows, she didn’t expect this. Okay, so maybe she persuaded Yelena to let her help, but! The point is, she didn't really realize it would also include a special „black widow“ type of training.
When Yelena finally gave in to Kate's nagging, she wanted to make sure Kate would be ready for anything first. So she started training her. The training covered all the areas, be it plain "be aware of everything that's going on around you" to physical training, weapon training (the Bishop girl was holding a gun like a child) and the basics of espionage.
So that's exactly why Kate found herself working out and sparring with Yelena every other day. Yeah, every other day, Yelena was relentless!
The two of them were sparring for an hour today. To Kate, an hour felt like eternity. Turns out sparring with Yelena really isn't like one of her martial arts classes.
Kate usually got at least one point per sparring session, but today was not going well for her.
"Again Kate Bishop, I told you to be quicker when dodging that move."
"You know,“ Kate barely breathed out, “this is not helpful. I'm really trying here."
"Yeah, yeah, come on. One more, then I'll let you go."
This was it, one last chance to get her winning point. She was not going to blow this.
The two started the routine again, Kate dodged where she had to and struck when she got a chance, getting more confident with every punch she managed to get in. She was finally able to actually get through the moves without any major problems, so she decided to push her luck and get the upper hand. Dodging Yelena's latest attack, Kate used the momentum and knocked Yelena down.
"Ha! Yes!" Kate immediately shouted with her arms flying up in the air, clearly excited she got her one win.
She learned two things right after that.
One, Yelena is really agile, as she managed to sweep Kate off of her feet from her position on the floor in one swift motion.
Two, Kate might be developing a slight crush on Yelena, who is currently pinning her down to the mat.
Suddenly, Kate was noticing everything. How they were both panting from the workout, but otherwise neither of them moved. How Yelena's body fit so well with hers and how firm her muscles were, something she couldn’t really observe in normal situations. And you know, maybe it would all be fine, if Yelena's face just wasn't so damn close. And her eyes weren’t so beautiful. And her lips...
„Act cool, act cool, it's just Yelena, your friend. Your friend that you, haha, definitely do not have a crush on. Who said that?! Not me.“
"Hi." Kate finally broke the silence and her disturbing train of thoughts.
"Kate," Yelena puffed out, a tiny smile on her face.
Kate noticed the lack of her last name, but didn't say anything in fear of disturbing the moment.
The moment that unfortunately came to an end anyway, as Yelena's smile disappeared and she quickly got up, offering Kate her hand with 'Much better' falling out of her lips.
A muttered 'thanks' was the only thing Kate was able to come up with.
Maybe Kate learned three things today. The third one was that she might definitely have a problem now.
It was Friday, a day when Kate and Yelena usually had a movie night scheduled, something they've tried to do as regularly as possible since they've started working together.
Although their tradition faltered a bit with how busy their schedules actually were. Plus, there was also "the incident" from last week. Yes, the incident, because Kate will not get her hopes up by calling it a moment.
But tonight they agreed to actually have the movie night because their last mission was particularly gruesome and they both needed to wind down.
So Kate took Pizza Dog to Grill's in the morning and then she set up everything for the night. Yelena then brought snacks and some beers to drink down pizza with, because of course Kate will definitely go down to the pizza place and buy at least two boxes at some point during the night.
The night was going well. They were settled on the couch, both of them on their assigned side, and enjoyed watching a movie. Until Kate's stomach started grumbling.
"Sorry," she said, already getting up from the couch, "I'll go grab us a -"
"Pizza, I know," Yelena chuckled, "you're very predictable Bishop."
"Well, I can also order some Chinese or literally anything else, just say the word."
"Pizza's fine." Yelena stated, she was getting hungry too and the pizza place was literally under them.
"See, it's the quickest option," Kate yelled from the kitchen, "plus it's pizza, duh."
"Yeah."
It took Kate around ten minutes, fifteen tops and yet when she opened the door with 'I'm here' she was greeted with silence, as Yelena was fast asleep.
Kate laid the boxes on the kitchen counter and went to turn the volume on the TV down. She then pulled a blanket over Yelena, squeezing her shoulder lightly. A gentle thing that turned out to be a huge mistake.
Yelena reacted with instinct, grabbing Kate's hand and tackling her to the floor.
Which is how Kate ended up under Yelena once again. A position that would be much nicer in different circumstances. Not that she was complaining.
"Yelena,“ Kate said softly, „it's me."
"Shit. Shit, I'm sorry," Yelena uttered, getting up and pulling Kate with her in the process, "I didn't mean to-"
"It's fine, I'm fine, Yelena," Kate interrupted her without breaking their hold, "this is on me. With what happened on the last mission... I wasn't thinking, I'm sorry."
The soft look Yelena gave her after was worth every strained muscle. Kate held Yelena's gaze, loosing herself in the green eyes long enough that she didn't even notice when she started caressing her hand in a soothing motion over Yelena's biceps. Or when she got so damn close to the blonde. It just happened.
"Umm, the pizza's getting cold," Kate stated out of nowhere, suddenly getting cold feet and went to the kitchen to get the food.
Yelena was left there for a minute with a puzzled expression on her face that was gone as soon as Kate returned.
"I told them to put more hot sauce on it," Kate almost whispered, handing Yelena the pizza box.
"Yaaas, thank you!" Yelena cheered.
They settled themselves back on the couch, a lot closer to each other than before and chose a different movie to watch.
Kate wouldn’t tell this to a living soul, but during the third movie they were basically cuddling. Kate was definitely going to call this a moment.
The rescuing missions Yelena and Kate did basically followed the same scenario, but had a very divergent setting and pace and took a different physical and emotional toll. Kate would sometimes compare it to the Bond movies they were watching lately.
Their next mission was clear. Locate the Widow in a sweet mansion during one of the public gatherings the owners hosted, separate her from the people who controlled her and set her free. Something they've done many times.
Turns out simple plans sometimes aren't that simple.
Kate had a hard time containing her now very real and ongrowing crush on Yelena, but she managed to actually focus on the mission without a problem, so everything was going fine. Up until the point when Yelena found out this Widow, much like Ana years ago, was not under control of the substance at all.
She found out the hard way, meaning she used the antidote and had to fight with the woman, when it turned out to be useless. Yelena eventually managed to knock her out and lock her in the nearest utility closet she found in this giant house.
"Kate, change of plans, meet me at the bar, right now," Yelena said through gritted teeth as she was locking up the widow.
"Is everything alright?" Kate whispered back.
"We have to get out and do this differently."
"Okay, but I think I'm right around the corner, so –umpf, " Kate didn't get the sentence out as she collided with Yelena immediately after she rounded the corner.
"Ugh, Bishop, come on!" Yelena let out once they were steady on their feet again.
"Sorry," Kate spat out, "so we're leaving?"
"Yeah," Yelena said, grabbing Kate's hand and leading her away as quickly as possible.
Handholding. A simple gesture and yet it was the only thing Kate could focus on.
The pair came to a halt few minutes later when one of the security guys blocked the only hallway that was leading back to the main area. Going back wasn't an option since it was the opposite direction they needed to go in and it was also too close to the locked up widow.
If the security guy wasn't getting closer and their time wasn't running away, Kate wouldn't even dare to say what she was about to suggest.
"Yelena," Kate whispered, "Yelena!"
When the blonde finally turned around to face Kate, the brunette could basically hear the gears turning in Yelena‘s brain as she was certainly trying to come up with the most efficient plan, or a way to silently knock the guy out.
"Kiss me."
"What?!" Yelena whisper-shouted.
Kate grabbed Yelena's face, hoping the blonde would focus only on her and stated: "Yelena, once he reaches the corner I'm gonna kiss you, okay?"
Yelena, still perplexed by what she just heard, managed to get a 'kay out before Kate brought her in and captured her lips.
Going in for the kiss, Kate expected two things - first, that the security guy would hopefully haul their asses back to the public area without any other problems and second, the possibility of Yelena being mad at her for what she was about to do.
What she did not expect was basically the complete opposite and a shutdown of her "be aware of everything that’s going on around you" skill that Yelena practically drilled into her. Because that’s what happened as soon as their lips connected.
The kiss was tense for a few seconds before they literally melted into each other. Yelena's lips were so soft and Kate couldn't get enough of her.
So that's why short kisses turned into longer, more languid ones and when Kate sucked on Yelena's bottom lip she even got a quiet moan out of the blonde. That‘s unfortunately also what brought them back to reality.
Kate pulled away and rested her forehead against Yelena's before she whispered: "Is he behind me?"
She felt Yelena shake her head no, so she carefully peeked behind the corner.
"He's -" she started, confused, "he's not there."
"What."
"He's not there."
Yelena uttered a bunch of Russian words while checking the hallway by herself. When she saw the air was clear she sighed and uttered 'come on'.
The two of them finally got out of the damn place a few minutes later and headed to Kate’s apartment. They barely spoke on the way there, which was very unusual, mostly for Kate, but it was understandable given the recent events.
Once they got to Kate‘s, Yelena immediately started planning her next move, not wanting tonight's failure to bite them in the ass.
Kate waited to see if Yelena brings up what happened. Only for a few minutes, then she lost her patience and asked: "Yelena are you okay? I'm sorry for what happened back there, it was a split second decision and I-"
"It's fine. Smart move, now let's plan this so it doesn‘t come back to us."
Kate noticed the use of it's instead of I'm, but didn't say a word about it. Not when Yelena was focused and determined to keep them safe first.
None of them mentioned the mission after that.
Another fundraiser. If Kate knew that even co-owning the Bishop security meant that she has to attend more of these events, she would say ‚no‘ to this immediately. Well maybe not immediately, it's nice to actually have a well-paid job, since she has to pay for college somehow and also all the stuff she keeps buying for her other job. Plus, the access to the data from the firm always comes handy.
But being a co-owner means showing your face at galas and fundraisers, even if it's boring and Kate hates it. This time she got at least a bit lucky, since it was more like a fancy party than a black tie event and therefore she didn’t have to be restricted in a long dress or go for her usual suit.
Kate opted for a short leather skirt with a simple top, pairing it with the same colored leather jacket (that she took off minutes after arriving, it was too hot to wear it all night) and a pair of heels that she was planning on changing as the night went on. Vans were more comfortable footwear than heels.
She was mendling between rich people, trying to woo some of them, just so she could get this checked out of her to-do list.
An hour into the fundraiser Kate found herself talking with a woman, who was a lot younger than the rest of the rich people there. She quite enjoyed chatting with her too, which was nice for a change. It also took her mind off of Yelena and their problem as she was genuinely paying attention to the conversation.
That’s also why she didn't notice Yelena entering the party and heading straight to the bar. Yelena noticed her though.
"I'm sorry what?" Kate tried to speak up over the music. She could’ve sworn it was getting louder with each passed hour.
The woman she was talking with saw a chance and took it, leaning closer towards Kate, repeating what she said once again right into Kate's ear. They talked like that for a while and the more they talked the more handsy the woman got.
A lingering touch on Kate's biceps, later on her hands, the mysterious woman was clearly flirting. And Kate was actually enjoying herself.
She was enjoying herself so much that she didn't notice the way Yelena was looking at them. The way she was practically throwing daggers with her eyes at the very lucky woman standing next to Kate.
But when Yelena noticed how bold the mysterious woman got with the flirting, she moved to action.
She went over, smooth and quick, and tapped on the woman's shoulder with ‚I’m sorry, can I talk to Kate for a second?' in a tone that was more demanding than asking. At the same time Kate surprisingly said 'Yelena?!'.
"Sure, she's all yours," the woman said, slipping her business card into Kate’s hand.
Yelena then grabbed Kate's other hand and basically tugged her towards the nearest exit sign.
"Yelena, is everything okay?" Kate asked when Yelena opened the door, worried something went wrong.
"Yeah."
"Where are we going?" she asked next, when they made it into an empty grey hallway.
"Wh-"
She didn't get to finish the next question because Yelena let go of her hand, gripped her hips instead and pinned her to the wall, capturing Kate's lips in a searing kiss.
When Kate relaxed enough, Yelena slightly pulled away with 'You talk too much,' and then she reattached their lips again.
Kate almost let herself be lulled by Yelena, almost being the key word.
"Wait," she said mid-kiss with no real intention of actually stopping. Getting lost in kissing Yelena was so easy and tempting but eventually she did remember what she was about to say and pulled away. Resting their foreheads together, she finally asked: "What is this?"
"Hmm?"
"What does this mean?“ Kate insisted.
"Can we talk about it later?"
"No, Yelena. We kissed two weeks ago and didn't talk about anything since then. I don't want it to happen again, so," Kate took a breath, steadying herself, "what does this mean?"
Yelena sighed out before leaning away from Kate, wanting to see her better.
"It means I can't stop thinking about you, Kate Bishop. Since that stupid mission. It means I like having you around and I like that you're helping me free the Widows. It means I wanna keep kissing you, Kate," Yelena poured out her heart, staring directly into Kate's eyes.
"Yeah that will do it," Kate got out of herself and pulled Yelena back in for a kiss, not really capable of doing anything else.
It was very different from the moment on the mission. Everything felt more… free.
Their kissing grew hungrier as the time passed and their hands were mapping each body part that was in reach, pausing their path only in places that made either one of them respond more. Kate felt Yelena struggling to fit her thigh in between her legs and cursed herself for wearing a tight leather skirt, because it was definitely ruining the mood right now.
Yelena pulled away and huffed out: „You know, I told you not to wear restrictive clothing.“
„For a mission!,“ Kate said in mock offense, „This is a business event, Yelena. Plus I look damn good,“ she finished with a shrug.
Yelena slowly leaned in to kiss a path from Kate’s mouth, along her jaw and to her ear and whispered: „Damn good enough to eat.“
Kate’s body shivered with want. Did she know this was a very cliche thing to say? Yes. Did it work on her anyway? Also yes.
„Take me home,“ Kate rasped out.
„Yes ma’am.“
