Work Text:
i’ll never know what they make of me.
you are my future then; my litany,
my legacy. the blood in the water,
the beating moon, your voice in
mine. your son and mine.
i am a boy and you are aeons
and i thought you could eat me
alive. dragonsteeth. dragonstongue.
the riptide, tearing me to the rocks
where you slept crouched, lover.
the sea like the sky: blue, forever.
this is what i remember of you now,
that blue, and that painted mouth,
and the gloss of your slippery arms,
the knife of your smile.
legacy - what to make of it? i
birthed a nation myself, my country
and yours, our brothers, our flag.
borne of fizz and fireworks, my l’manberg.
like you, lover; snap and crackle.
ancient. unknowable. untouchable.
(in your own ways.) you are the last
of man’s gods, the water that taketh
away. you’re salt only now, the crust
of the wind. you fanned our fires.
to think that you are there
abhorrent. heartless, guileless,
one day, i will know better.
so to you, lover, i swear:
they will tell tales of you.
they will make legends.
