Chapter 1: Day 1 - Ice

Chapter Text

Sarek felt lost.

Completely overwhelmed by a series of actions and events that challenged his logic. His dignity was lost somewhere between the first and third fall. Between the cold that paralyzed his insides and Amanda's magnificent laughter. How could he have gotten caught up in such random activity?

None of his teachings had prepared him for the clumsiness of his body. Yet the theory of movement was simple and he was used to it being enough to master each of his actions to perfection. There... impossible...

And although he refuses to admit it openly, he hated this.

At the same time...his wife's laughter was such a delight that he felt, illogically and shamefully, ready to fall a thousand times more to hear it.

It had been five months and seventeen days since he had heard that frank, sweet laughter that had seduced him on his first visit to earth. Even if she made every effort possible, the young woman had trouble adapting to Vulcan. The gravity there was slightly lower, the temperature much warmer, the air heavier. And her joy of life was not really welcome among the character rigidity of his people. She had forged fragile friendships with a few passing earthlings and her strength of character had assured her the respect of the students to whom she taught the history of the earth, but despite everything, Sarek saw her slowly die out with a certain sadness. Under the pretext of having to officially meet the family, he had organized a trip to Minnesota where Amanda's older sister lived.

A firm and deliciously warm hand through the thick fur gloves pulled him from his thoughts. The young woman looked at him, resplendent with joy, her cheeks flushed with the cold and her eyes sparkling:

"Come on, stand up my love."

"I'm going to do a little break Amanda, I'm fine here, go ahead, I'm looking at you." »

She raised a dubious eyebrow and slid to the floor, tangling her legs in his and resting her hands against his cheeks:

" Right here ? Right in the middle of the lake? »

He didn't answer and she looked deep into his gray eyes. He read there an infinite tenderness and a deep comprehension.

"You are chilled Sarek, it's true that you are not used to these temperatures. It's all a lot to you isn't it? You look tired, would you rather we go home? »

" No I... "

"Don't tell me 'Vulcans don't know fatigue', not here, and not with me," she interrupted, putting a finger to his lips.

"Amanda, don't mind me, you looked like you were enjoying yourself, I'm fine here watching you." »

"But I'm not interested in having fun if you're suffering all alone in your corner. I love you and I want to be with you. »

He sighed :

"It's the first time since we left for Vulcan that I've seen you laugh so heartily. I would like... "

"Sarek," she stopped him again smiling, "I'm happy." It's my choice to follow you and I can't imagine my life without you. Whether it's here, or in Vulcan. My home is where you are. »

He returned a shy smile. This woman was definitely amazing. She always understood well before him what was hidden deep in his heart and she had succeeded in bringing him a peace that he was not even aware of having lost. She was a treasure, his treasure. His people could not remain forever indifferent to his disarming charm, he was certain of that.

The young woman took off her glove and put two fingers on his before leaning down to kiss him. The warmth of that gesture reinvigorated him, and when she pulled him to his feet, he didn't protest:

"I won't let go of your hand this time," she breathed, pulling him tenderly onto the ice.

He let himself be guided, skating cautiously for a few more minutes before she brought him back to the edge of the lake. There they sat silently on a trunk, watching the others laugh and whirl around. A cacophony of joy he wasn't used to hearing but was oddly...pleasant. Perhaps because the person standing next to him provided enough warmth and security for him to feel comfortable. Their bond was a bulwark against the waves, he was much more protected from the emotions and thoughts of others when she was against him.

As he began to release his mental shields, enjoying the cold and the peace, Amanda hugged him. He returned her hug. Discreetly, she took his hand and placed it on her belly, whispering:

“Soon, my love, there will be three of us. »

Life throbbed beneath his fingers and the intense joy that rose within him caught him completely off guard. He buried his head in his wife's shoulder. And there, facing the frozen lake, amid snow and laughter, Ambassador Sarek, the impenetrable Vulcan, wept for the first time in his life.
