“You’re… a boy…?” Bruce asks, hesitantly.

Dick frowns. “No, I’m not.”

“What.”

Oh boy. Oh shit, did Dick forget to tell him this. “Mama said,” he says, trying not to sound defensive, “I don’t have to be a girl, if I don’t want. But I don’t like the boys at school much, not during gym anyway, so I thought maybe I could keep my hair and clothes and everything, but change with the girls.”

It had seemed like, as Alfred would say, an elegant solution. Dick’s beginning to think he might get another talk about life’s necessary evils after all.

“Right,” Bruce says, after a long moment. He’s staring at his burger like he’s never seen it before. “Okay. That’s— Okay. I need to talk to Alfred, about that.”
