Eddie gave himself a once-over : the sleeves length, the shoulder cut, the lapels...The invitation said cocktail attire, and that seemed to fit the description. Satisfied, he looked behind him, through the mirror. Buck was sitting casually in the store armchair, looking like an advertising model despite the old jeans and the dry paint under his nails. Wait, was he checking his ass? Was it something wrong with the hem?
- "What do you think?"
Buck looked up and nodded.
- "Looks good! ...Why blue?"
- "Just a pretty color…"
Eddie ran a hand through his hair, the fabric stretched comfortably.
- "Thanks for coming with me, man! I swear, I don’t have anything to wear anymore. And I can’t even cheat with my uniform..."
Eddie spined a little in front of the mirror, buttoned up, unbuttoned, hands in pockets..Buck was looking at him with a soft smile.
- "So, how did it go with Taylor?"
Buck shrugged but did not close off.
- "Good. I mean, no hard feelings. She was just not my person, you see? We were just too different."
Eddie smiled for himself but refrained from commenting about the mean things that were supposed to be said in case of confrontation. Buck’s anger was not really against Taylor anyway, just the normal reaction of someone trapping himself in a life not made for him. Eddie could almost heard Franck’s voice about the importance of self-fulfillment and honesty...
- "So, you’ll take your couch back? It’s still in the garage…"
- "You still have it? I though you gave that to Goodwill."
Eddie rebuttoned his jacket.
- "Yeah, well, I did not. Still have the throw pillows too, if you want them back."
Buck grinned.
- "Nah. I’ll take my couch back but you can keep the pillows. We’ll just have to buy a cover to go with it."
Eddie felt suddenly hot and tight in his little suit, but that was no panic attack.
- "Yeah. Light blue, that would be nice."
