Work Text:
Lumine’s never been a deep sleeper, waking up from the slightest of sound preventing him from getting the amount of sleep he planned. Which is why he hears the distant sounds of someone breathing hard , ragged breaths that pull him out of his sleep. While his eyes adjust to the darkness of the room, the breathing doesn't stop. Infact, he can hear it getting worse.
It can only be one person- Kody’s. He was sleeping next to him anyway.
As not to panic him, he slowly turns his head towards the left, until he can see the figure of Kody hunched over, his hand resting on his forehead as his chest heaves up and down. If he looks closer, he can see Kody’s hand trembling along.
Lumine rubs his eyes as he gently sits in an upright position, afterwards glancing at Kody to see him in the same state.
“Kody?”
Lumine regrets saying it, as Kody flinches hard . He’s still for a moment before slowly turning his head to Lumine, removing his hand from his head. His eyes are wide with panic and shock, and his mouth slightly parted. He doesn’t say anything, simply continuing to stare at Lumine like he’s a ghost.
“Kody.” He says softly. Still no response.
Lumine begins to reach out his hand, noticing how Kody’s eyes follow his movement. He carefully takes a hold of Kody’s right hand and feels it trembling, but Kody doesn’t move his hand away.
“Is this okay?” He asks, watching how Kody’s throat bobs, as if he wants to say something. His hand is still trembling, and his breathing has somewhat evened out. Lumine begins to let go of Kody’s hand as he’s unsure, but the moment he does Kody reaches out and grabs a hold of it again. He seems to be surprised by his own actions as his grip on Lumine’s hands begin to loosen, but Lumine makes sure to hold on tight this time, not letting go of Kody’s hand again.
Kody’s eyes close for a second, as he takes one big deep breath and falls back on his pillow. He realizes they are still holding hands despite the awkward position, and some part of him is happy he didn’t let go. Lumine lies back down on his pillow to make it more comfortable, and it’s just the sounds of Kody’s breathing in the silence of the room.
He once again turns his head to look at Kody, but Lumine’s stomach drops when he sees Kody’s eyes glistening. He watches the tear slide down his face, and Kody makes no move to wipe it.
“Did you.. have a bad dream?”
This time, Kody ends up responding.
“It doesn’t matter.” Kody replies in a weak voice. Lumine’s stomach churns- he’s not used to seeing Kody like this at all.
“Did you want to talk about it?”
“ No .”
Kody responds, hellbent on not talking about it at all. Lumine decides it would be best to leave it alone, seeing Kody distressed over the mere topic of it.
They both lay there in silence, Lumine feeling the movement of Kody’s arm wiping his tears away.
“So.. how are Sera and Camille?” He asks, trying to get Kody’s mind on something else.
“They’re.. nice.” Kody responds after a bit.
“They are, It’s nice to speak Terranian again.”
“What do you guys even talk about?” Kody asks.
“Normal things?” He responds after pondering over it a bit.
“Hm.”
Lumine turns to look at Kody, seeing Kody’s eyebrows scrunched up. He seems somewhat frustrated.
“What, you don’t think we talk about you, do you?” Lumine jokingly asks. Kody stays silent after this, and his eyebrows remain furrowed.
“Wait, you.. do?” Lumine’s stomach does a little flip, and he suddenly feels bad.
“I don’t really care though. Talk all you want.” Kody mumbles.
“But.. you do care. I.. I’m sorry. We really don’t say anything bad about you.”
He knows Kody doesn’t believe him because of the way he looks away, refusing to make eye contact. Kody then sighs, turning his head back to look at Lumine.
“I’m tired.” Is all he says.
“Oh. Sorry, we can sleep now.” Lumine begins releasing his hold of Kody’s hand, but Kody’s grip remains strong.
“Can we..” Kody begins, seemingly unsure of how to continue. Lumine already understands what he’s trying to say. Lumine pulls the covers over both of them, and lays on his side so he's fully facing towards Kody. He can’t help but smile, the feeling of Kody’s hand wrapped around his making him happy.
He doesn’t know when he fell asleep, but waking up to their hands still intertwined, probably sticky with sweat, he found that he really didn’t mind.
