Chapter 1: the first letter (sykkuno)

Chapter Text

Being the youngest prince in the kingdom of Mira is a boring life. Everything I do is monitored and approved by my parents, the waitstaff don't let me clean up my own messes, and my older brother, Toast, is set to inherit all the kingdom's assets and responsibilities. He's only a year older than I, but everyone treats me like a baby because of him. No one ever has time for me.

So I set out to find someone who would. One night, I took some parchment and a quill to my room and wrote a letter. I've always believed in fate, you see, and I knew that whoever found this letter was destined to be my soulmate. If I were to get married before my brother, he would finally have to realize that I'm not just his baby brother. Plus, I pride myself on my poetry. So, I began writing.

Dear stranger,

You likely live in Mira Kingdom, for this bird of mine surely couldn't go so much further. I am but a wayward dandelion seed, destined to find a gentle patch of earth in which to bury my roots.

My bird will stay with you until you write a letter back, so shall I introduce myself?

You will only know me as Sykkuno, for I fear if you knew my real name, you'd dare not send a message back. Lest I scare you off, I shall not tell you a word more about me unless I receive a letter back from you. Instead, I will ask about you.

Do you believe in soulmates? I know I do, for it is such a pure and innocent concept that could only be created by the divine, or perhaps young children. I have not met my soulmate as of yet, but I will know it when I see their face.

Write me back,

Your new friend

I signed Sykkuno in my best cursive at the bottom of the page and rolled it into a tight bundle. I tied it with a scrap of ribbon from my aunt Yvonne's frock that she left in my room, hoping she wouldn't miss it. Everything had to be perfect for my soulmate. I then summoned my bird, a tamed falcon gifted to me as a child by my father. Being so young at the time, I had named him Birdie. I tied my letter to Birdie's ankle and sent him off out my window.
