Work Text:

Ren was on red now. His traitor of a soulmate had gotten blown up by a creeper. Frog, Log, and Dog were now green, yellow, and red.

And with the warden gone… it was time for a proper meeting between them.

Pearl had called everyone up to her treacherous base in the sky for the next meeting of the Broken Hearts Club. This time, Ren really did arrive with a broken heart.

”Friends and allies,” Ren announced. “I have recently discovered that my soulmate had gone out to meet his secret admirer without me knowing.” “Ooh, that’s not good,” Martyn responded. “Do you even know who it is?” Ren shook his head. “Even if I did want to ask him, he’d never tell me.”

Before the two could continue their conversation, they heard a quiet giggle from Pearl. “What’s so funny?” Ren asked, his hostility beginning to show. “Oh, nothing, I was just going to say… it looks like your soulmate abandoned you for someone else too. That makes three of us!” Pearl looked a bit too happy about her observation.

“Not only that, but I’ve made a list of forbidden fruit with this paper that Scar gave me,” Pearl continued. “If my observations are correct… if we find one of these each, then our soulbonds will be broken.”

“Well, what’s on the list?” Martyn asked. “Golden apples, totems of undying, and potions. But we’d have to go to the nether for potions, I only have one golden apple, and it’d be such a hassle to get a totem,” Pearl responded.

”Woah, woah, woah, where’d you get a golden apple?” Ren asked. “Found it,” Pearl simply responded. “Let’s go to the nether, then. Pearl and I have already been, we can show you the ropes,” Martyn interrupted.

Pearl and Ren nodded, and set out to go make a nether portal.

”Operation: We Need to Go Deeper is a go,” Ren said, stepping through the nether portal. “Hey, we never agreed to call it that. Although, that is a cool name,” Martyn noted. “Where is this fortress again? My brain is muddled from all the drama,” Pearl asked.

”If my memory recalls correctly, it’s this way,” Martyn said, leading the other two towards the fortress. He had the netherwart already, all he needed were the blaze rods and their plan could be put into action.

The three of them came upon the towering fortress and broke into it, landing themselves coincidentally into the blase spawner room. “Ren, be careful, you’re on red. We don’t want you to die,” Martyn said, holding up his shield and preparing for a blaze to spawn. Ren nodded, holding up his shield as well.

And so, a blaze spawned, and another, and a third one. Each member of the Broken Hearts Club tackled one blaze, and both Pearl and Martyn managed to get a blaze rod. “Quick! We have what we need! Everyone out!!” Martyn yelled, rushing out of the fortress with the other two close behind him, fireballs shooting out at the three of them.

Once they reached safety, they were out of breath and left wondering if that was really worth it.

As they traveled back to the overworld, Ren felt a strange pang of guilt. Should he really be doing this? What if it was all just a misunderstanding?

Once he stepped through the portal, back into the sunlight, the guilt disappeared as he saw BigB in the distance, talking to… Grian. They looked like they were laughing about something, and they each had a cookie in hand.

Ren’s blood boiled, and all the hostility that came with being a red life seemed to flood into him all at once. He wanted to go over there and strike Grian down, to watch all the joy leave the parrot man’s pathetic face as he bled out onto the grass, going from green to yellow.

The other two seemed to notice Ren’s anger. “You think BigB left you for Grian?” Pearl asked. “I dunno, Pearl, what do you think?! They’re standing right there, talking to each other, laughing, and BigB even shared his cookies with Grian! He never did that for me!” Ren seethed.

”Calm down, Ren. This is the reason why we’re doing this in the first place, remember? Let’s just head back over to Pearl’s place,” Martyn attempted to comfort Ren. It sort of worked. “Okay, let’s do this.”

Once the three of them were safely back up in Pearl’s tower, Martyn crafted a brewing stand and a glistering melon, and brewed up two healing potions. “Now, who wants these, and who wants the golden apple?”

”I’ll have the golden apple, I was the one who found it, after all,” Pearl said. She took it out of her pocket and took a bite, while Ren and Martyn downed a potion of healing each.

The ties began to break, and it caused every member of the group excruicating pain. Every single one of them was knocked down to one half heart of health.

Once it was over, all of them ate to get back up to full health, then set out to go test if it had worked. The first one they found was Scott, out doing who knows what. When he saw Pearl, he was livid. “WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?! HOW DID YOU GET US DOWN TO A HALF HEART?!” Pearl giggled. “You’ll see. Martyn, now.”

Martyn punched Pearl, and it didn’t hurt Scott. “What..? How did-” Scott asked, confused. “We broke the ties. That’s also why our eyes are grey,” Pearl answered. “Now, you don’t have to deal with me anymore! None of our soulmates do! The demons living inside the three of us were right, being free is so much better!”

”You’re insane,” Scott said, his voice barely a whisper. “Why would you two work with her..?” “We’ve all been broken up with,” Ren answered. “Our soulmates left us for someone else, so we joined together, and broke up with our soulmates for real.”

”I’m getting out of here.” And so Scott left, and the Broken Hearts Club went back to Pearl’s tower.

Over the next few days, Pearl, Martyn, and Ren noticed some changes in their appearances. Demonic red horns grew out of the top of Ren’s head. Martyn now had a demonlike tail. And Pearl had sprouted massive, black and red demonic wings, that looked like they were formed of blood and tar.

The demons living inside of the three of them really were right; it’s so much better being free.
