there’s a little bit of hell inside us all

Summary:

Pearl has murder on her mind, and being green doesn’t matter anymore.

Notes:

A little bit of context before you read this: this is a sequel to another Double Life fic of mine, “severed ties and broken hearts”, but you don’t *have* to read that to read this. But before you read this, just know that in the first fic, Pearl, Ren, and Martyn broke their soulbonds.

Hope that helped! :)

Work Text:

Pearl had felt empty for a long time now, and she didn’t feel emptier when she broke the link between her and Scott. In fact, she actually felt better. More… free. If only the stupid curse that came with being a green life didn’t prevent her from killing Scott. She’d take great joy in seeing him dead.

“Pearl, are you alright?” Martyn asked, noticing Pearl’s blank expression as she stared off into the distance. “Hm?” Pearl’s expression didn’t change, nor did she seem to hear Martyn’s concerns.

”Hey guys, I’m back! I just took a bunch of food from Box, and- is Pearl alright?” Ren asked, returning from his absence. “I don’t know, she’s been like that for ten minutes now,” Martyn replied, showing genuine concern.

Pearl’s odd trance seemed to be broken when Tilly jumped up and licked her face. “Aww, thanks Tilly,” she said, petting her dog. “Now, what were you two saying?”

Before Ren or Martyn could say anything, they spotted a certain parrot-winged man climbing up the long pole that led to Pearl’s… house? “Grian?” Martyn called from inside the base. “What are you doing here?”

”Just a little routine maintenance- and also asking you two a question,” Grian responded, finishing climbing and arriving in Pearl’s house. “What question would that be?” Martyn asked, suspicious.

“You two know you aren’t supposed to be friends with a red life, right?”

Pearl burst into hysterical laughter. “Since when have you ever cared about that rule, Grian? I might not have been there, but I know how you, a green life, were allied with Scar, a red life, in your first lives. Not only that, but the three of us saw you talking to BigB yesterday!”

”I- that’s different! BigB and I are secret soulmates, not friends,” Grian retorted. “We made an alliance before he turned red, and he has no reason to be hostile towards me.” “Does Scar know about this whole ‘secret soulmates’ thing you have going on with BigB?” Martyn asked.

”Well, uh, no, but- he doesn’t need to know!” Grian responded, defensively. “He’s got his Jellie-pandas, he’ll be fine!” “Do you seriously have no concern for anyone but yourself?” Ren growled. “Have you never thought for ONE SECOND how your actions could affect everyone else?”

”What does it matter to you? You’ve got your little ragtag group of demons, it can’t be that bad. And at least your soulmate isn’t burning down peoples’ houses and telling everyone about your sugarcane!” Grian replied. “That’s because I don’t have a soulmate anymore, Grian,” Ren responded, pulling down his sunglasses to reveal that his eyes were grey. “I’m free now.”

And with that, Ren pushed Grian down the hole in the floor that opened up to the ladder. Right as Grian was about to hit the ground, he grabbed the ladder with one hand, steadied himself, and climbed down. He yelled something to the people in the house (that they couldn’t hear), and stormed off.

”I’d be more careful around him if I were you, Ren. Grian is a dangerous enemy to have. He’s building up a supply of TNT… wouldn’t want your final death to be explosion-induced,” Pearl warned. “I know. I just can’t stand that little smug grin of his that shows up whenever he talks about the fact that he’s betraying everyone!” Ren replied, eyes flashing red.

”I don’t like it either, but there are better things to do than antagonize Grian. Like… killing Scott!” Pearl suggested. “Pearl…” Martyn sighed. “What? We aren’t soulbound anymore. I can kill him if I want!” Pearl replied. “No, you can’t. You’re still on green,” Martyn said.

”Listen, Martyn! I broke my soulbond, we all did! Do you think the universe is going to care if we break any other rules?” Pearl asked, a deranged glint in her eye. “Good point,” Martyn agreed, only somewhat out of fear. “Besides, he’s on green! He’ll just go to yellow, and he’s a rule-follower, so he won’t kill me until he turns red!” Pearl continued, the deranged twinge in her voice making everyone else in the room slightly terrified.

”Pearl, if it’ll make you happy, then go do it. I’m not going to stop you, but I won’t join you either,” Ren said, turning away from Pearl. “C’mon, Ren! You’re on red! You’re supposed to be violent and bloodthirsty! Aggressive and hostile! Where’s all that anger that showed up when you saw Grian and BigB together?” Pearl’s massive smile was unsettling and clearly fake.

”I’m saving it for Grian,” Ren simply responded. “Ugh, fine! You’re both massive buzzkills, you know that?” Pearl grumbled, climbing down the long ladder that led down from her house.

”I can’t be the only one who’s worried about her, right?” Ren asked. “She’s telling me not to make an enemy of Grian, but she’s being so reckless herself. I think the demoness inside her is starting to break out.” “Yeah, no kidding, Ren,” Martyn responded. “Have you seen her wings? She’s not the only one either. I’ve grown a weird demon tail, and you have demon horns.”

”I do?!” Ren asked, sounding frantic. Martyn took out a water bucket and made a small pool of water on the floor. Ren looked at himself in it, and noticed that his friend was right. “You know… I actually kinda like ‘em.”

”OHHH SCOTT~!” Pearl called, skipping gleefully towards Scott’s house, that same unhinged look on her face. “I told you to leave me alone!” Scott yelled from inside. Pearl giggled, and opened Scott’s door.

”Jesus, Pearl, you’re like some kind of horror movie villain,” Scott said, walking up to Pearl. Pearl cocked her head to one side, then unsheathed her sword. “Pearl… put that away…” Scott warned, slowly backing away from Pearl. “But I don’t want to. I want you to feel the pain you made me feel. And I want to test my newfound abilities…” Pearl replied, her voice quiet.

She brought her sword up, unfurled her demonic wings, and stabbed Scott through his chest. The last thing he could do before his body crumbled into dust was just stare in fear at the demon standing in front of him, and whisper, “what have you done?”

When that death message showed up on Ren and Martyn’s communicators, they both had one question.

”When did Pearl get a chance to name her weapons?”
