Work Text:

The lights are low and the curtains are drawn. Steven sobs under the covers, his skin itchy from the fabric pressing against his tear-streaked face.

It’ll be okay, buddy, Marc murmurs. I know it hurts—

“Shut up.”

Marc shuts up.

Jake unfortunately takes the silence as a green light. She wasn’t the right one for you anyway, hermanito.

Indeed. She would have crumbled under the stress of your lives.

Steven blinks. Then he yanks the covers down and glares at Khonshu where he lounges on their sofa. “Get out of my apartment.”

Khonshu’s giant head swings lazily in his direction. One linen-wrapped foot rests on the couch and the other hangs off the side. His cane rests against the back of the chair. You’ve seen better days, Steven Grant.

Steven throws the covers over his face to hide his rising blush. He’s a mess.

Now, listen Steven. Why don’t you take about a week off from that app? Just spend time with us.

Jake pipes up. Yeah, Stevie. We’re great company.

Steven sobs again.

Khonshu chuckles. Apparently not.

Aw come on, it ain’t so bad. We can go to that new wing in the museum that opened up. Remember?

Mhm, or we can go to the library. Your favorite nook, right?

Steven wipes his nose with an ugly sniff. “I just want love. That’s all I ever asked for. Y-You both have no trouble finding it but I’m the one who’s always catfished, or used, o-or called too sweet. Well excuse me for having a heart!”

You’re overreacting, Steven Grant. There are plenty of—

Steven rears up and throws a pillow at Khonshu’s ridiculous head with a snarl. It nails him in the eye-socket. Khonshu squawks.

Good aim.

Steven sniffs and wipes his eyes. Curling back into himself. “Thank you.”

Why don’t you give Layla a call?

Steven scoffs, looking at the mirror at the end of the bed. Jake and Marc are sitting side by side. Jake is fiddling with his flat-cap, leaning back against the headboard with a knee kicked up. Marc’s arms are crossed over his knees. Both look concerned. “Don’t lend me your wife.”

She loves you, Steven. Marc hesitates. And you really need a hug.

Khonshu could give him a hug.

Marc snickers. Sounds uncomfortable.

Bony-ass bird.

Steven cracks a small smile.

Do you wanna switch?

“I want to sleep.”

Okay, then sleep. We’re waiting for you.
