“I don’t care,” he mumbled.
“I care.” Marc’s voice was softer then, and Steven blinked his eyes open. When he glanced up, he saw how sympathetic he looked. “I really fuckin’ care.”
“I know you do.” Steven sighed, feeling some of his resolve crumble.
“So why won’t you just talk to me about it?”
He grabbed one of the dry towels off the rack. His voice was muffled as he harshly rubbed it over his face. “It’s not that simple, mate.”
Or: Steven isn't adjusting well after Cairo, Marc just wants to help, and there's something else lurking in the shadows, waiting to take shotgun.

Deaf to her sister's pleas, she stopped in front of the grave, and directly across from the devilish debonair. Neither of them spoke, neither of them addressed the corpse at their feet. It was as if the rest of the world had fallen away. Slowly, he lowered his cigar, jaw hanging slack. He was truly beautiful. She tried desperately to still her hammering heart, her hand resting just below the collar of her black dress. His pupils dilated. Her heart beat faster still.
