Victor recalls that story as Reed keens, shuddering beneath him at his praise. Unresponsive to dirty talk my ass, he thinks. What a lazy piece of shit.

Reed meets his gaze, eyes swimming with tears, the falling ones steadily cutting around the curves of his face. His frown wobbles with ferocity. He looks utterly pitiful.
“Are you hurt?” He asks. Reed gives a single, firm shake of the head, sending a tear careening into the lens of his glasses. “What happened, then, draga? Why are you upset?”
“My- my professor,” Reed starts, voice warbling, and Victor immediately dislikes where this is going.

Victor doesn’t anticipate coming home to Reed crying. Nevertheless, if there is anything Victor can unequivocally do, it is comfort Reed.

“What?”
“The pain. I’m not playing this fucking game with you anymore. Where is the pain?” He waited, stared, until finally Dennis’s eyes came up from the floor and locked in on his own. “You’re one of the most driven people I’ve had the pleasure of working with in a long time, Whitaker, and you are off your game in a big way. I’ve seen you sit down more times in the past eight hours than I’ve seen you sit ever. You’re barely eating, you’re dragging ass, and -please excuse how direct I’m being when I say this- you’ve been downright bitchy the past three days.” Dennis’s face fell, and he tilted his head back down, eyes locking in and beginning to count the speckles in the tile floor, until long, deft fingers met his chin and tilted his face back upward, forcing him back into the eye contact that would be his undoing. “Tell me where it hurts.”

Dennis hears the revving of a motorbike engine, disturbing his reverie and making him frown. It’s late — who in their right mind is out driving around on a motorbike? He waits for it to pass, so he can slip back into thinking about Robby and dinner and what they might do after dinner, when the engine cuts out. Dennis lifts his head, eyes opening, taking a second to adjust—
“Need a ride?” Robby asks him, holding out a spare helmet to Dennis. "Jack told me you only just left.”
He steps forward, taking the helmet from Robby. “So you’ve been spying on me?”
“The whole time I’ve been gone.” Robby nods, as Dennis swings himself onto the back of the bike. He winds his arms around Robby’s waist, tucks himself in against his back, and contents himself with the familiar warmth of his body as Robby starts the bike up again.

In October, Robby comes home. Dennis tries to decide what that means for them both.
