Work Text:
"No no no! It-" Robin cut herself off with a sigh, frustrated at herself for confusing things. "It's not important" she insisted at Nancy's concerned gaze. "It just- It got all swirled up in my head and I probably misunderstood anyway" she dismissed. "Please don't make anything of it, okay?"
"Fine... Fine" Nancy agreed after a moment, taking an invisible weight off the blonde's shoulders. She was just glad that Robin wasn't masking at that moment, so she wanted to savor that for as long as she could. "But only if you promise not to do this to yourself anymore" she pleaded. "And only if you talk to Steve. He's been worried about you, too" she told her. "You want to know what's actually weird? It's the two of you, not being the buddy-buddy morons you usually are"
"Aye-aye"
It was two days later at the video store when Robin finally decided to follow through on her promise to her girlfriend and talk to Steve.
Their shift had ended an hour ago and the store was closed, but they were staying after hours to restock shelves and goof around a bit- An occurrence that was not uncommon for the pair since they hardly ever got their work done on time during daylight. Robin had been unnaturally quiet the whole day, still trying to mask for fear of Steve thinking she was hyper and a weirdo, as he'd apparently told Dustin.
"Hey, um... Steve?" she broke the silence as she constructed a stack of tapes on the counter, a subtle way of being herself without fully doing it. Steve looked over at her with a hum of acknowledgment, waiting for her to go forth with whatever it was she wanted to say. Well, you sort of asked for this she thought to herself, swallowing back her anxiety as she took the plunge. "Do you find me annoying?"
"What?" Steve asked, taken aback by the question as he stared at his friend. She looked over at him with a glazed-over, sad expression on her face, as though waiting for him to yell at her or confirm her suspicions in some other way. "Where did you get that idea?"
"Dustin said that you said you thought I was a 'hyper weirdo'" she explained, motioning air quotes at the last bit. There was no discernable emotion in her voice aside from sadness, and Steve felt a wave of guilt wash over him at that. "Do you still think that, Steve?" she asked. "If I'm annoying you, I need you to tell me"
"Robin, no" he said firmly, walking over to you. "That was a long time ago. I don't find you annoying, okay?" he asked, getting a non-committal nod in response. "Is that why you've been acting so off these last few weeks?"
"I was trying to be normal for you guys, I-"
"Robin" Steve cut her off with a sad sigh before walking to the left, out of her sight. She didn't follow his figure- He was probably leaving, quitting the job so he never had to see her again- Better yet, he was writing a report to get her fired so he could keep his job without having to tolerate her weird, hyper-
A pair of arms suddenly wrapped around her from the side, and she was pulled into a hug.
...
What?
"I'm sorry" Steve apologized as he held onto his friend. "I'm really sorry, Rob" he insisted. "You don't annoy me, and you don't need to change jack shit"
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive" he told her firmly, allowing her free of the hug. "You want me to drive you to your place or Nancy's?"
"Actually, could I stay over at yours?" Robin asked him, nervously fidgeting with the sleeve of her jacket. Steve smiled as he nodded and led the both of them out the door and to his car.
