Chapter Text
Wordgirl, almost fourteen, is currently living on her foster planet as Earth's only undefeated champion and heroine. Due to her countless superhuman accomplishments, Wordgirl has acquired over forty keys to the city. The citizens respected the Lexiconian and hosted numerous celebrations in honor of their mighty superheroine each year.
Wordgirl has faced many battles and defeated the most toughest supervillains in Fair City alone. Dr. Two Brains, The Butcher, and Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy are just to name a few. Even so, the villains themselves also developed a mutual respect for the young heroine. For the Lexiconian, she hopes that life in Fair City remain changless as the time goes by. But an unexpected turn of events would prove her wrong if not challenging otherwise.
It's a wonderful Friday at Woodview Academy. The former Elementary School acquired enough funds from it's sponsors in which they have erected new annex buildings and has now expanded it's levels up to secondary school for old students to continue their education at the institution. At the academy, Becky Botsford (a.k.a. Wordgirl) with her monkey partner Bob (a.k.a. Captain Huggyface) are attending her ninth grade classes. Her academic records had always been impressive, especially at Reading Comprehension. She has Violet Heaslip and Todd 'Scoops' Ming as her closest friends and allies who also knew her secret identity. Lunchtime came and the two girls were seated at their favorite table at the cafeteria. They talk about their favorite stuff and schoolwork, when it's not enough, Becky talks about her life as a superheroine and how she and Huggy saves the city everyday.
"And then I wrapped Two Brains and his henchmen with a steel pipe. He almost got me and Huggy there, but I always manage to win in the end!" Becky says exuberantly.
"I'm just glad you're safe, Becky." Violet repled. "These villains aren't getting any easier."
"I gotta admit that they've been getting clever. But their arsenal still lacks a punch." Says Becky with her fist hitting her palm. "I guess it's not as exciting as it used to." With her arms folded at the table, Becky gives a deep sigh, slouching in front of her food that was left untouched.
"What's wrong?"
"Oh I dunno. Probably just tired, I guess."
"I know that habit of yours, Becky. You must've seen something today that made you feel... unsatisfied."
"Then you know me too well, Vi."
"Care to talk about it?"
"Well it's simple really. I'm just glad that... well it's just... I'm usually with Bob wherever I go. But when I'm alone, well... that's just it. I'm usually not bothered by it when I'm fighting the villains. But when there is no danger, it's just me and the sky... It feels so...lonely."
As Wordgirl, Becky recalls helping a few couples from time to time. Some of them were caught in her battles, or rescuing them from near tragic events. Whenever she sees how they were immersed in intimacy and affection, a feeling of adoration and resentfulness grows inside her. Violet noticed her bestie's eyes glitter amidst the blank stare of her spoiling food. She then understood what she meant.
"Oohh Becky!" She hugs her BFF all of a sudden.
"Whoa! What's this all about?" Startled the ochre brunette.
"Can't you see? What's missing from you right now is your love life!"
"What?"
Indeed. It's been too long since Becky had cherished someone in her life other than her family. She remembered the times how she fell head over heels with Todd Ming, but his feelings did not reciprocate. Instead Scoops manifested his affection towards her best friend, Violet. Both cherished each other since. As for her, she moved on and focused her attention on crime fighting. Whatever is left of her love life became dormant.
Becky isn't convinced. "I don't know if that's what I'm really feeling right now."
"There's no harm if you try to find out."
"Even if I could, I still have my duties as a superhero. That alone already conflicts my personal life."
"Bestie, you don't need to commit to a relationship right now. For starters, you just have fun knowing someone's qualities. Find out your similarities to him, and then let time allow you two get close eventually."
Becky was skeptical of her BFF's love advice, considering none of her steps was applied to Scoops courtship. Becky complied nonetheless. "Alright, just know someone first. Should be easy."
"Do you know anyone in particular?"
"I did, but..." She was going to mention Scoops who was now in a relationship with Violet. Unknown to them, there were times that Wordgirl has interfered with their relationship before. "I got over it."
"Anyone else in mind?"
"Not really?" Becky shrugs.
"Not even... a supervillain?" Teased Violet.
"Oh please! Let's not even go there.!" Becky facepalms herself.
"Well... That's a problem."
"Hey girls, what's up?" Todd 'Scoops' Ming arrives at the cafeteria and sits at the girls' table with his tray.
"We were about to ask you the same thing." Retorts Becky."
"Sorry I'm late. There's a new article I'm going to write at the daily rag regarding the city's new mandate."
"What kind of mandate?" Asked Violet.
"Legislative stuff. They're amending a resolution against committing a crime in Fair City. I still have to confirm it."
"That sounds serious. Thankfully, we don't have to worry about it." Becky assures herself. "
Agreed." Nods Scoops. "Say Violet, if you aren't busy, would you like to go with me to the park tomorrow afternoon?"
"I would love to Scoops." Answers the blonde avidly.
"You're look wonderful as ever." Scoops complies with charisma.
A sense of adoration and resentfulness develops inside the young Botsford once more.
Suddenly, her super hearing picks up a distress call. The timing could've never been more better. She rather fight a supervillain right now than to sit down acting as a third wheel. "Sorry, duty calls." She properly said goodbye to her friends and left the cafeteria to join with Bob at the garden. Unknown to her, a familiar figure sneaks past by their table and follows her. Bob squeaks at her, who's glad that her partner showed up. He was waiting for her to join him in the garden so he could have a share of her lunch.
"Let's go, Bob. Looks like Chuck is at it again."
Her partner winces in reply.
"Aww shoot. There goes my lunch. I guess we'll have to go for a... take out!"
Bob frowns at her pun in response.
She shakes her arm before putting them at her sides. "C'mon, I thought that was pretty good! Well, Whatever."
"Word up!"
She presses her chest with her fingers to transform into Wordgirl, Earth's mightiest superhero in Fair City. Along with Bob who suits up to become Captain Huggy Face. Wordgirl's loyal and reliable sidekick.Together, they flew into the sky at supersonic speed leaving a yellow trail with reddish glow.
She and CHF arrived at the Edible Edibles Sandwiches shop where Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy is holding Reuben Grinder at condiment gunpoint.
"Stop right there, Chuck!" The heroine shouts.
"Wordgirl!" Replies Chuck, who is about to pull a trigger at his Condiment Ray.
"What are you demanding this time?"
"I'm handling the catering for Brent's reception, But this guy committed the worst crime for all sandwich makers. He used white onions instead of red!"
"But white onions produce a stronger flavor." Retorts Mr. Grinder with his hands up.
"Only if you cook them! Everybody knows that red onions are better in salads and sandwiches! Isn't that right, Wordgirl?" The crimson heroine was forced to answer a million dollar question.
"Well if you put it that way, I guess you... know your onions! Get it?" She grins and elbows huggy on the side. Huggy smacks his face.
Wordgirl's countenance fell. "Let's just wrap this up."
"I don't think so, Wordgirl! You're the one who's gonna get wrapped up..." He aims the Condiment Ray at the duo. "...In dressing of course!"
"You cost me my lunchtime, Chuck. Now I am hungry for battle!"
Chuck opened fire, shooting alternate condiment projectiles at Wordgirl. The red heroine easily dodged them by weaving and bobbing. The Lexiconian's evasiveness painted the store walls and furniture with random dressing.
"Don't think this is all over! Here's a comblimenary... copimentry... What's that word?"
"Oh, you meant, complimentary. It means..."
"Yeah that's the one! Here's a complementary amenity, Multi Mess Mesh Mash Supreme!"
Chuck squeezed the trigger and all three dressings shot three individual strands that intertwined together into a net. Wordgirl avoids it but caught Captain Huggyface and forced him against a wall. The condiments expanded rendering the anthropoid immobilized.
"Let him go, Chuck!" Shouts Wordgirl.
"No way Wordgirl!" He fires another round at her. Wordgirl evades it but her hand got tangled. Chuck fires a third and this time, it caught her other hand. Both hands were adhered to the wall behind her.
"I got you now, Wordgirl!" Says CTESMG as he aims at the heroine to finish her off. "And I'm gonna make my mom proud!"
Wordgirl smirked. "Not today, Chuck!"
With enough force, she pulled her hands off the wall and twirled the wads of condiments into a massive clump on each hand. Chuck fired his round, but the heroine dodged it by flying above the ceiling and whipped her globbed hands towards Chuck. The wads stretched and attached to the villains' Condiment Ray. She yanked the weapon away from the evil-doer and plastered it against the wall next to Huggy. She then used the same glob to circle around to restrain the evil sandwich making guy.
"Another complimentary service from your local genial superhero. Isn't that right, Huggy?" Asked her partner.
Captain Huggyface squeaks, reminding her that he's still immobilized. "Oh yeah." She frees her sidekick and wiped all the splattered condiments around the shop.
"Thank you Wordgirl!" Says Mr. Grinder.
"Don't mention it, fair citizen. Huggy what time is it?"
The monkey looks at his watch and squeaks at her partner.
"What? Lunchtime's almost over? Aww man. There goes my stomach."
"Excuse me, Wordgirl, but if you're hungry I have a extra sandwich on my lunch box." Said Chuck.
"Really Chuck? You'd let me have your sandwich?"
"Sure thing. I ate one on the way here. I never heist on an empty stomach. Consider it compi..."
"Complimentary. It means expressing a compliment; praising or approving. Not to be confused with Complementary, which is combining two or more things to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another. For example you approved me to take your extra sandwich, which makes it complimentary. And you combined all three condiments to create your Multi Mess Mesh Mash Supreme, which makes it complementary. Either way, I think you accomplished both words today.
"Excuse me, Wordgirl." Interrupts Mr. Grinder. " Is it alright to accept offers from a criminal?"
"It's fine, Mr. Grinder. Chuck can be thoughtful sometimes, even as a villain."
"I see. But I don't think that's a good public image for a superhero." Wordgirl gave a puzzled look from Mr. Grinder's response.
The police arrived to arrest CTESMG. Wordgirl helped herself and took the sandwich from his lunchbox.
"Thank you, Chuck! See you soon!" She waves at them.
"Bye Wordgirl!" Answers chuck, as the police takes him outside the shop. She and Huggy zooms upwards back to Woodview Academy.
The law enforcement officers escort Chuck to the detention van.
"Alright, while I'm in jail, I better prepare for my new scheme the next time I battle Wordgirl." The villain says to himself.
"Sorry buddy." One of the officers interrupts him. "I'm afraid there isn't gonna be a next time for you."
The officer tasers Chuck from behind, rendering the dangerous villain unconscious.
