Work Text:
Kurt is turning around in his bed just trying to get into a comfortable position but finding none. He hasn’t slept well since the incident happened at school and even though he is at Dalton now, it still haunts him. He knows it isn’t that big of a deal, a lot of people have it a lot worse. But it still is eating at him. He needs to tell someone, someone other than Blaine. He needs to tell his dad.
Kurt throws his covers off himself and sits up in bed. He throws his legs over the mattress to the ground and stands up. He puts on a hoodie to save himself from the cold and doesn’t think twice about walking to his parent's room. He liked to call it his parent’s room because Dad’s and Carole's sounds so distant. Carole is his stepmom after all. He walks with the softest pace he had in him trying not to disturb Finn and then knocked on the bedroom door.
His nock was unanswered so he tried again, and then again for a third time before deciding to just go in. He saw his dad and Carole fast asleep. He went up to his dad and tapped his shoulder.
“Dad?” Kurt asked. Kurt could now feel the tears begin to form in his eyes, but he oppressed them and continued waking up Burt. “Dad?”
After a few gentle shakes, Burt finally woke up with a mild gasp.
“Kurt?” Burt asked once he recognized someone woke him up.
“Can I talk to you please?” Kurt asked in a voice so soft Burt could bearly make out what he was saying. Kurt felt sick to his stomach. How was he ever going to bring this news without his dad freaking out? Maybe he will think he’s a freak. Oh god no. Kurt felt sick just thinking about it.
Burt on the other hand immediately felt alert. Kurt wasn’t one to share a lot about himself with him, so him standing at his bedside at 2 am said something, “Yes, of course, buddy.” Burt said sitting up in bed. “Let’s go downstairs and talk there for a bit okay?” Burt asked.
Kurt nodded.
Carole who was laying next to Burt had woken up throughout the conversation too, but chose to not let them know she heard. She felt Kurt’s tension from a foot away.
Kurt and Burt went downstairs, turned on a small lamp in the corner of the living room, and seated themselves on the couch. Kurt didn’t know how to start this conversation. He so desperately wanted to get it all out, he just doesn’t know how.
“So what do you want to talk about bud?” Burt asked looking at his son. He could see Kurt holding back tears. He sure hopes this has nothing to do with Dalton. His son is there to be happy not to be bullied again. Burt was fearing the worst.
Kurt swallowed. “So you know about the Karofsky situation.” He began. Kurt could feel his heart in his throat. He really doesn’t want to say this out loud. It makes him feel dirty and weak and used. He feels disgusted.
“Yes.” Burt replied. What could possibly be happening with Karofsky? He doesn’t go to school with Kurt anymore, which is for the better. He threatened the life of his son for god’s sake!
“Ye, so well, you don’t know all of it,” Kurt explained, now with tears streaming slowly onto his cheek. “I’m just like going to tell you the story now okay.” Kurt sniffed.
“Yes, of course.” Burt replied. He hasn’t been this scared in a long while. The look on his son's face scared him. Kurt was usually so put together, now he was close to sobbing his heart out.
“So I told you that he sometimes shoved me, well he did a lot more than that. He shoved, no, threw me into rows of lockers.” Kurt said, looking at his dad for any reaction.
“Go on, just listening. My reaction can wait till you tell me the full story.” Burt said. He was angry. Oh, so angry. But Burt was a very put-together man, something people often misjudged him for, but he was Kurt's dad after all, so it only made sense really.
“He also used to throw me in dumpsters with some of the people I now call friends. That hadn’t happened in over a year though. Not since the guys joined Glee for real.” Kurt was very grateful for those friends. Puck was actually a very decent guy once you got to know him And so is Finn, but that is well-known information by now.
“He made me his personal target. This, I now know, goes a lot deeper than typical bullying.” Kurt explained.
What the hell is that supposed to mean, is all Burt could think. What the hell has this guy done to Kurt?
“So okay, uh, okay.” Kurt didn’t know how to tell this story. He has only ever told it to Blaine, no one else. Kurt's hands were shaking and his voice was shallow. “This one time I was walking down the hallway with my phone in my hands he saw me and pushed my phone out of my hands before pushing me into a row of lockers. That day I got like a giant bruise on my back.”
Kurt took a deep breath and tried to steady his voice. “I was fed up with his bullshit and ran after him yelling. He went into the locker room and I followed him.” Kurt dragged his hands down his face. “God I was so stupid.”
“Hey, hey,” Burt said. “You are never, ever stupid for standing up for yourself.” Burt reassured him. Burt’s stomach was in a knot though. Kurt’s life had been horrible at that school.
“I yelled at him, he yelled at me.” Don’t push me, Hummel. “I shouldn’t have done that.” Kurt said mostly to himself. Kurt was crying now, full-on crying. He felt so stupid and dirty telling this story.
“He kissed me.” Kurt finally said.
“Oh god.” Burt breathes out. Then silence hit them
Burt sat there in shock feeling sick of his own. That guy, that monster had not only verbally abused him, physically abused him but also sexually assaulted him. Now it all clicked.
“If you told me what?”
“Just that he is bullying me.”
He kissed Kurt and then threatened to kill him if he told anyone.
Kurt looked so pale at the moment Burt thought he might pass out. Burt didn’t want to know this, but he needed to know. How could he not have known? This happened like what, three months ago? Burt really wasn’t happy with himself on this one.
Then his mind went to a much darker place. What if Karofsky did more than just kiss him? Panic now really hit Burt. What if he touched Kurt in more places than that?
“Kurt, I know you won’t like what I’m about to say, but I gotta ask.” Burt started. “Did he do anything more than just kiss you?”
Kurt swallowed thickly. “No.” He rasped out.
Burt took his time to take in this information before scooting closer to his son hugging him tightly. Kurt held on to his father just as tight and sobbed onto his shoulder. No one, not even Blaine, could make him feel as safe as he did with his dad. Burt felt an immense amount of relief hit him. This was bad, really bad, but at least that didn’t happen.
“Good, good.” Burt whispered. They sat there in silence for a while until Burt spoke again. “Kurt, I want you to know the following okay?”
Kurt sat up straight from holding his dad and nodded.
“Whatever you want to do with this, I don’t care what, I’ll be there every step of the way. Doesn’t matter if it is pressing charges or just staying at Dalton. I don’t care.” Burt said no bit of doubt in his voice. “And from now on I want you to tell me anything that is bothering you okay? Anything.”
