Work Text:

It was just a normal party at Morgana’s, the priestess of all parties. Merlin wasn’t quite sure what this particular party was about; for all Merlin knew, knowing Morgana, it could’ve been because there was a shoe sale.

It was a nice party, not too many people, the liquor was running smoothly, and there were light snacks spread out all over the house. It was nothing like what Gwaine’s parties were like, with loud music and enough drinks to drown a footie team twice.

Merlin had lost Arthur sometime after they arrived, so Merlin leaned against the wall for the moment, dangling his beer between his fingers. He had chatted with a few people that he knew from other parties and Gwen wasn’t here with Lance yet.

He felt the person next to him before he heard them hiccup. ah, a drunk. Looking out of the corner of his eye, he spotted bright ruffled blonde hair, which normally never had a hair out of place. Smiling, he turned so he was facing his husband of five years.

“Your cheekbones…very sharp.” Arthur slurred

Merlin snorted before he could stop himself. Arthur had prided himself for being a smooth talker and able to get anyone's number, but Arthur had always become tongue tied when it came to Merlin. He loved his husband even more because of it, even if their first meeting hadn’t gone well, which, their mutual friends agree, is an understatement. Merlin maintains to this day it wasn’t their fault the restaurant had kicked them out. It was simply closing time, that’s all.

“So, I haven’t seen you around before and I would’ve definitely remember you,” Arthur commented

Merlin almost laughed out loud. Arthur didn’t seem to recognize or remember they were married. How had he gotten so drunk? Gwaine. Must have been Gwaine. Though he supposed he should be grateful that Arthur had decided to hit on him. Merlin didn’t think Arthur would ever cheat on him, no matter how drunk, but he felt flattered Arthur was still pulled to him even if he couldn’t remember.

“Oh, I’ve been to a few parties. You?” Merlin asked, playing along. Arthur smiled what Merlin was sure was supposed to be a charming grin, but was more like a look someone would have after smelling dung.

Lacking his usual king-like grace of his namesake, Arthur reached out to rest his arm on the wall to, no doubt, make what seemed like a sexy come on. Only, he missed and slammed his head into the wall.

Merlin now had tears in his eyes and a death grip on his bottle to keep from spilling it as he laughed. He had never seen Arthur like this. Arthur was normally okay with his drinks, having fun but not blacking out. Merlin wondered what Gwaine had said to get him to this point.

Arthur just grunted and rubbed the side of his head. He was definitely gonna have to deal with that in the morning, Merlin thought. Arthur was the worst when it came to pain and illness; a common cold had him lounging around like a 5th century noble woman.

Maybe that’s why he married a doctor, Merlin thought sometimes after heating up Arthur’s soup for the fifth time to get the right temp. Damn princess, Gwaine was right.

Merlin set down his bottle and reached out to inspect Arthur’s head. Gently, he moved Arthur’s hand where he was holding it, probing the spot as lightly as he could while looking for any sign of a bump.

Merlin was so focused on checking if his husband was okay that he didn’t realize how close they were standing. He flicked his eyes down to check Arthur’s eyes for signs of concussion to find Arthur looking at him with an emotion Merlin could only call smitten.

There was a blush all the way down Arthur’s neck to the tips of his ears. Merlin gave him the only smile that Arthur could bring out of him while slipping a blonde lock of hair behind the still red tinted ear.

He tries not to giggle like a schoolgirl at Arthur letting out a small gasp and trying to lean into the hand Merlin was removing from his head. They just stared at each other for a few moments, lost in their own world, Like they had been since the first moment they met.

“Soooo….. We should get you some water and ice fo-“ Merlin declared, going into doctor mode only to be cut off by his husband asking him the same thing he asked him five years ago.

“Will you marry me?” Arthur rushed out in one breath. Merlin opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off before could. Arthur rambled on, seemingly not even take a moment to breathe between sentences.

“I know I’ve just met you and I might sound crazy, but I feel like I’m drawn to you. t’s just in my gut and I feel this in my heart that if I let you go, I would lose the most important thing to me in this world,’ Arthur finished with a sigh, then looked up at Merlin with what Merlin had called the ‘I would kill if those eyes told me to’.

Arthur was never good with his words and instead liked to show through action. The cup of coffee next to the bed when Arthur had to go into the office and Merlin was sleeping off a double at the hospital. The foot massage after a 12 hour shift, rubbing back feeling into his poor toes. When the anniversary of his best friend Will’s death would arrive, Arthur would make sure to have his favorite take out and movie waiting for him when he got home.

No, no, Arthur Pendragon was not one with words and Merlin was feeling a little choked up as he reached for Arthur's left hand with his, linking their fingers. The coldness of their rings clinked together as Merlin spoke with as much fondness his voice could hold.

“Prat…we are already married.”

Arthur’s face broke into a grin that Merlin only saw when they had stood across each other at their wedding. God, he was so smitten and ridiculously in love with this man. This very drunk man.

“Lucky me!!” Arthur proclaimed, then passed out into Merlin’s arms. Sagging under pounds of muscle, Merlin’s knees buckled. Suddenly, another arm helped straighten Arthur up.

Looking to see who his savior was, Gwaine has his phone in one hand and a shit eating grin on his face. Merlin just rolled his eyes and started to move to the hallway that would take them to the guest rooms of the house.

“Let’s get him laid down. Really, Gwaine, what were you thinking? He is going to be insufferable in the morning,” Merlin chastised as they found a room. Opening the door, Merlin walked in and toed off his shoes and threw off his jacket.

Gwaine dumped Arthur on to the bed a little too hard, causing Arthur to grunt and hold his stomach. Merlin pointed a finger at the rugged man and spoke in a even tone.

“He throws up, you clean.”

Gwaine raised his hands in surrender.

“Be kind. I am the one who got the whole thing on video,” he smiled and waved his phone at Merlin. Merlin side eyed it for a moment before uncrossing his arm and huffing.

“You better send that to me,” and as an after thought, added, “But don’t send it to Morgana. Arthur would never forgive you.”

Gwaine just grinned and winked while leaving the room, which meant that he already had and Arthur’s half sister had even more blackmail material. Like she needed more!with what she already had. Really, that woman.

Getting a glass of water from the adjoining bathroom, he set it on the side table next to Arthur’s head. Taking off Arthur’s clothes down to his pants, Merlin tucked him under the blankets. Making quick work of his own clothes, he turned off the light and crawled into bed with his husband.

Turning to face Arthur, who was already asleep and dreaming, Merlin looked at his husband and felt blessed by the triple goddess of the old religion for finding this man. Merlin closed his eyes and fell into dreaming together.

Of magic and swords. Prince turned king and his servant. Dragons. Swords in stones. Albion.
