Arthur finds out Merlin has magic. He also finds out how often Merlin risked his life for him and so, he does the only thing he can think of to protect him: banishment.
Hurt and angry, Merlin leaves and swears to not look back.
But, when two years pass and Morgana shows up at Merlin’s door, urging him to fill Gaius’ position as Court Physician, Merlin agrees. He really doesn’t know why, but Arthur is sure Merlin would do just about anything to get on his nerves.
Unprepared for the shock of seeing Merlin back in the castle, Arthur is forced to speed along his plans to lift the ban on magic. But between stubborn councilors, a mysterious plague, a still angry Merlin, and Morgana being Morgana, Arthur is fairly certain he’ll lose his mind before the first year of his reign even ends.

Summary
Merlin comes to Longstead. He is a physician (sort of), a magician (not out loud), a wanderer. What brings him to that particular village at that particular time, is none of these things. He has a task to fulfill, and it's not his destiny. His destiny is not his business.
He’s stretched out on a bank of grass, out beyond the village wall.
Merlin is looking for plants that can be both magical and quiescent, he can make something innocuous seeming, betulia, belladonna. With the right spell, he can prolong the lives of the men and women laid out in village behind him. He will keep to himself just how close to the brink many of the villagers are. He can feel it, the edge of something encroaching, something ending, the smell of flesh.

Summary
Merlin pulls another bushel of wormwood from the jar and sets it in the mortar again. He rereads the medicinal text for the fifth time, and then slowly begins crushing the herb again. This time, he envisions folding his magic back into his skin in the way he’s seen Cook fold batter for cakes. Gentle motions in time with the turn of the pestle. The ever present buzz of his magic begins to fade from his ears as he adds drops of pine-sap and watered down honey.
It's only when his magic has subdued somewhat, that he notices the other person in the room.Arthur.

When a mishap sends one of Percival’s partners into Merlin’s care, he decides that as a physician, he has to take a more active role in making sure the man doesn’t accidentally overwhelm any future partners faced with his rather intimidating size. As Arthur heals bit by bit in both mind and body, learning to walk on his prosthetic leg and all the frustration that comes with it, Merlin sees the good, the bad, and the downright ugly sides of him. Despite this—or perhaps because of it—they grow closer.

Though the two have orbited and tolerated each other for many years in a professional capacity as Court Physician and Court Sorcerer, they have hardly interacted outside of that. Merlin adores being a doctor, more than he ever thought would be possible. He does. It’s fulfilling. It’s amazing.
The problem he never saw coming is that people at the club get reckless when he’s on duty. For some reason, knowing that there’s a bona fide medical doctor stalking the halls means that people think that this is their best chance to go nuts. Merlin likes that they feel safe enough under his watch to test their boundaries, but there’s also a part of him that hates it. He’s here to get away from work, not to have more of it, goddamnit.
