Work Text:

It was snowing outside when Taehyun stared at the brunette boy in front of him. The boy looked confused with whatever was in the book that he had been reading since the morning. He kept scratching his brunette hair with troubled eyes, still not understanding what the book was talking about.

“Close your book and make lunch, Beomgyu. It’s already afternoon and you have yet to eat anything. Don’t you even get hungry?” Taehyun rolled his eyes from where he sat. He had been watching Beomgyu all day since he woke up this morning. Even Taehyun had eaten his breakfast, so why did Beomgyu, who had woken up first, haven't eaten anything instead?

Beomgyu closed his book. “I can’t. I’m so done. I’m not reading that again. Why did Soobin hyung even make me read this stupid book of stupid fairies?!” The boy immediately shut his ears as he heard the ringing sounds of the offended fairies around him. “Wait- sorry-,” It felt like his ears started to ring on its own after hearing the sudden noise. “I was talking about the fictional fairy from the book, not you guys!”

“That’s what you get for mocking the fairy, Gyu.” Taehyun put his head on the table, closing his eyes, ignoring Beomgyu’s bickering with the fairies.

“Alright, alright, I’m sorryy..” Beomgyu ran to his kitchen, avoiding the angry fairies and approached Taehyun. “You’re hungry?” He asked.

“No.”

“Yeah? Wait, I’ll prepare yours too.”

“I said, I’m not hungry.”

“I know, I know, be patient, Taehyun-ah..”

Beomgyu took some vegetables, tofu and a bunch of frozen dumplings, then began to make some sort of soup, the only decent meal that he could make safely without poisoning anyone. He poured water into the pot and heated it up. Washed the onions, vegetables and mushrooms, then cut them as evenly as he could.

“Huge cuts as always. You should really learn to cut them smaller.”

“Stop complaining, Taehyun-ah.”

He poured the vegetables into the pot, adding salt, pepper, and sugar as seasoning. He cut the tofu and poured them in too.

“Hum, did I miss something?”

Taehyun pushed the already thawed dumplings closer to him.

“Oh right! Why did I forget the main ingredient? Thanks, Tyun!” The brunette pat Taehyun’s head with a blinding smile that always left Taehyun loving him a little bit more.

“Hmph, what could you do without me.” He said with a tint of pink on his cheeks.

Just as Beomgyu put the dumplings, he suddenly stopped. “Wait, can you even eat this Taehyun-ah?” He asked with a horrified face, looking at Taehyun, asking for confirmation.

“I think it’s okay.” Taehyun said, not really sure but he couldn’t care less. He loved Beomgyu too much to be bothered and not eat the boy’s cooking. Honestly he wouldn’t even mind gulping down a poison if Beomgyu were the one who made it.

“It should be okay, right?” Beomgyu nodded his own head and cleaned the used utilities. They only needed to wait several minutes before the soup was ready to be eaten. “Wait at the table, Taehyun-ah. I’ll clean first.”

“Do it quick. You need to eat it immediately, Gyu.” Taehyun said impatiently. His brows furrowed in the middle.

“Haha, stop frowning that hard, Taehyun-ah, you’ll look older than you actually are!” Beomgyu giggled as he continued washing the cutting board and knife. As he finished, the brunette wiped his wet hands with a rag by the sink. “I think it’s ready.”

He approached the stove and turned it off. His hands waved right and left, and not long after that his and Taehyun’s plates came floating and landed on the table. Taehyun sat on his usual seat, waiting for Beomgyu to prepare it for him. Another wave of the brunette’s hand and a basket of bread approached them and sat nicely in front of Taehyun.

Taehyun sent him a confused look but Beomgyu only replied to him with a cheeky grin. “I’ve run out of rice so I guess bread won’t be too bad!” He said, which made Taehyun roll his eyes again but said nothing.

Beomgyu filled their plates with the soup and cut the bread into tiny pieces so that it would be easier to eat. “Here’s yours, Taehyun-ah. Eat slowly, it’s still super hot.” The boy said as he put Taehyun’s plate in front of him. Then he poured some for himself and cut the bread. He took the seat across from Taehyun and began eating. Taehyun only stared at the food and the boy alternately.

Beomgyu, who noticed how Taehyun didn’t move a single muscle, just had to ask him. “You want me to cool it down?”

“Yes, please.”

“Alright, alright,” Beomgyu closed his eyes and began concentrating, as a blinking green light appeared next to him. When he finally noticed the fairy’s present, he opened his eyes and looked at the wind fairy.

“Please help cool Taehyun’s soup down.” Beomgyu asked the fairy with a small smile. Without further ado, the blinking light flew near Taehyun’s plate. A cool breeze suddenly wiped across his plate, reducing the heat that was radiating from the soup.

Taehyun nodded his head at the wind fairy. “Thank you.” He said, and the fairy booped his nose and thanked him with its jingling voice, before it disappeared.

With the soup now in perfect temperature for his cat tongue, Taehyun began eating. It was a little bland but still edible, so Taehyun won’t complain for now. There was silence between them but it wasn’t an uncomfortable one. Beomgyu was never the type to talk while eating so Taehyun respects it too.

It didn’t take long for Beomgyu to finish his meal. The brunette sighed from feeling too full. “That wasn’t so bad.” He said while rubbing his tummy. “But I guess let’s just make Soobin hyung cook for us next time.” The boy giggled from his own joke. “It wasn’t a bad idea, right Taehyun-ah?”

“Yeah, I guess.” Taehyun said as he finished his meal.

“Right? I know you’d agree, haha!” Beomgyu patted Taehyun’s head and took the empty plate with him.

Taehyun sat there silently watching Beomgyu’s back. Thinking it would be great if he could hug the brunette. But it was wishful thinking so he sighed and laid his head on the table.

As Beomgyu wiped his hand on the rag again, he quickly looked for the clock. “Wait, what time is it?” The clock showed 2:15 p.m, and Beomgyu hurriedly ran to his bedroom. “Shit, I forgot Yeonjun hyung will be here in fifteen minutes!”

Choi Yeonjun. Beomgyu’s friend, crush, and probably soon to be lover. A human that Taehyun knew for sure was a much better companion for Beomgyu than he would ever be.

Taehyun left the kitchen table and approached Beomgyu’s bedroom. The brunette boy was pretty hectic there, not knowing what to wear because of course the boy would want to impress his crush.

“Oh, Taehyun!” Beomgyu exclaimed as he noticed the intruder. He showed Taehyun two long sleeves, one was white and the other was black. “Quick, pick one for me!”

Taehyun pointed at the white one. “You look better in bright colors.” He said.

“Great! Thanks, Taehyun-ah.” With Taehyun’s choice, he took his t-shirt off and changed to the white long sleeve. His hand waved and a black trousers came to him while the other unused t-shirt returned to the closet. Beomgyu stood in front of a mirror, checking out his outfit and styled his hair.

“Don’t forget this.” Taehyun said, patting a white denim shirt on the table. “It’s pretty cold out there.”

“Right, I forgot about it. Thanks again, Taehyun!” Beomgyu said as he wore the shirt, tidying it up again in front of the mirror.

Not long after that, the doorbell rang, surprising Beomgyu who immediately stuffed his cellphone and wallet into his pockets. “Oh for real, why is he so fast? It’s only 3:01!”

Beomgyu wore his shoes on the entryway and faced Taehyun who sat on the shoe drawer. “I won’t be back until late night, so be good and don’t make a mess, okay?” He said as he rubbed the soft gray fur on Taehyun’s head. “I’ll get you your favorite snack later. Bye!” The boy smiled and left a peck on Taehyun’s head, before he opened the apartment door to greet a taller boy in white padding jacket who was waiting for him.

Taehyun wasn’t exactly sure what love is but seeing Beomgyu’s bright smile as he saw Yeonjun, was quite enough to tell him that Yeonjun was really special for the boy. And Taehyun really could do nothing but hoping for their happiness. Because he was just a mere cat who could only sit there and listen to Beomgyu silently, never able to say anything comforting or help him physically.

Well, as long as he could stay by Beomgyu’s side, then that is enough.

Notes:

Thanks for reading! I made this out of boredom so it isn’t perfect. Planned to make it into a series but not really sure if it will happen.

In case you didn’t notice, no, Beomgyu doesn’t understand Taehyun, he only hears his meows. And Taehyun know about this but couldn’t care less and still insisted to pretend that Beomgyu understands him.

I hope you enjoyed the story and please leave kudos and your thoughts in the comment, thanks!
