Chapter Text
Karl sighed as he picked his phone up for what seemed like the 100th time in the past hour. His finger hovered over the call button but ultimately he put it down again. He sighed again and reached to pick it up just as it buzzed with a notification. He turned it over to see a text message from Sapnap. Sapnap, his new boyfriend of a month and the reason for his anxiety of a phone call
They had been dancing around each other since the moment they met and after meeting up in person those feelings had come to fruition. After Sapnap had finally summoned up the courage to actually kiss Karl, the last day had been spent going on a date and talking things out. With promises to visit and call everyday, Karl had waved goodbye to his official boyfriend. That was about a month ago now, and while they had decided to keep it on the down low, Karl was starting to feel guilty about keeping his mom in the dark.
So that brought them to now, Karl nervously thinking how to bring it up to her, Sapnap sending him encouragement. It was that encouragement that prompted him to hit the call button before he could back out. Still his heart skipped a beat as the call connected.
"Hey baby! This is unusual, are you streaming?" She greeted cheerfully and he swallowed.
"Uh no-no I'm not. Can't a guy just call his mom?"
"Of course! But I know you, plus we just talked this morning."
Right, he had forgotten about that. He resisted the urge to bang his head on the desk. Instead he just laughed awkwardly, "Okay you've got me there. Actually I wanted to tell you something." He paused to take a deep breath, glancing at his computer screen. The green light beside Sapnap's discord icon helped him to relax. "So I'm sorta seeing someone right now."
"Oh? A person, huh? Does that mean they're not a girl?" His mother joked but Karl sucked in a breath.
"Uh, yeah actually it might be a boy? I might have a boyfriend?" He squeezed his eyes shut and the silence between them seemed to drag on forever.
"Oh Honey, I'm so proud of you! That was very brave of you. You know I'll love you no matter what okay?" He opened his eyes, relief flooding back into his body. "But!" She continued on, "You had better tell me all about him! He must be very special to have won over my boy. I didn't even know you liked someone. All I knew was that you were busy with work and hanging out with your online friends, the Texan boy you brought over is one right?"
He chuckled and scratched the back of his neck. "Yeah about that... That's Sapnap, my boyfriend."
"Karl Jacobs! You brought over a boy who you've been seeing for a month without telling your mother?!"
They both laughed at her fake outrage."To be fair I wasn't dating him then."
The next hour was spent on call with his mom and Sapnap after adding via discord. Sapnap hung up after answering her questions and Karl focused back onto his mother. "I love you mom. Sorry I didn't tell you sooner, it's just- he's really important to me and I didn't want to pressure him. He tried coming out to his parents and well- It didn't go so well to say the least."
"Karl, baby I love you no matter what. I understand it's scary but I'm so glad you told me. As for that poor boy, you bring him over next time he's up you hear? I should beat his parents for being pieces of shit." He grinned at her grumbling about homophobic parents.
"I will mom. Thanks again."
"Call me anytime and pass on my love to Sapnap. He seems lovely."
The line went dead and Karl pushed his chair back and flopped down on his bed smile never leaving his face even as he drifted off.
Meanwhile back in Florida, Sapnap had decided to clean their kitchen while waiting for Dream to come back from hanging out with his sister. Back before Karl he wouldn't have cared but he had found that a side effect of dating Karl was a sudden need to keep things more tidy. He had just finished wiping down the counters and starting up the dishwasher when the doorbell rang. He quickly dried his hands and hurried to the door. He was a little surprised to see it was Dream's mom on the other side, arms loaded down with groceries. Then again this wasn't the first time she'd come over while Dream was out.
"Hello Sapnap! I know that my son is over with his sister, however I was running errands and figured it would be easier to drop this off with you then go all the way home." He thanked her and reached to help carry some of the food to the kitchen. She let out a whistle as she glanced around the kitchen and he blushed. "My goodness I don't think I've seen it this clean since you moved in." He shrugged lightly, distracted by trying to shuffle things around to make the groceries fit. that's probably why he opened his mouth without thinking.
"Thanks, my boyfriend is a bit of a neat freak and I guess his habits have been rubbing off on me." It took a few seconds for his brain to comprehend and he swirled around once it caught up. Panic started building in him and he had a deer in the headlights look etched on his face. Fuck. Fuck. He fucked up. But before he started completely losing his cool, a pair of hands grabbed onto his shoulders pulling him back to reality. Dream's mom stood in front of him now concern written all over her face.
"I'm guessing you didn't mean to say that out loud?" She didn't wait for an answer. "You're okay, alright? I'm not going to throw you out or be mad. Hell if I had a problem with it Dream would have been kicked out when he told me he was bi in high school. Plus his crush isn't exactly subtle." That startled a weak laugh out of him. and he looked up at her.
"Thanks, sorry it's the first time I've called him that and well the last time I tried to come out... My family wasn't exactly the kindest." Concern changed to anger then to sadness before she pulled him into a hug.
"You know I already view you as another son? You can always come to me if you need some motherly advice or comfort. You have my number and address. Reach out anytime." He hugged her tightly before pulling back and wiping the few tears that had leaked out during her talk.
"Thank you, I definitely will remember that. Also would you mind not saying anything to Dream? I want to tell him myself."
"Absolutely! This stays between us. Now let's get the rest of this put away!" As she turned to help unpack more groceries, Sapnap smiled and pulled out his phone to shoot Karl a quick text.
SAPNAP: just came out to Dream's mom. Oops! Went well tho
