Work Text:
It wasn’t very often that Mother Nature helped out when they were dealing with a fire.
The 118 had been called to a house fire, something not out of the realm of normalcy. Dispatch had indicated that it was arson, as the homeowner had walked in to someone turning on the oven with her brand new kitchen linens lining the area. One spark and the whole house had gone up.
The arsonist was already on their way to jail courtesy of Athena Grant, as he’d readily confessed to the crime, screaming that the house belonged to him, not his sister by inheritance. If he couldn’t have it, no one deserved it.
Just from the street, it was clear that their goal was to contain the fire to just the one structure. There was no saving the building. The homeowner had taken the news somewhat well, waiting until the firefighters were actively trying to knock down the flames before breaking down in tears across the street, standing surrounded by concerned neighbors.
Minutes passed and Mother Nature decided to lend a hand. It had been threatening rain all day in Los Angeles, skies darkening but most people easily disregarded it because of course it wouldn’t rain in LA. But it did: the heavens opened up and a steady rain fell from the sky, helping dampen the last of the flames.
As the 118 moved to ensure the structure wouldn’t spark again, Buck turned and saw the homeowner standing under a neighbor’s umbrella, already getting soaked from the rainfall. He quickly checked in the firetruck for his spare jacket and grabbed it, before walking across the street.
“Here, take my coat. At least while we finish up.”
She carefully slid it on, paused, and then leaned forward to gently hug him. “Thank you.”
