Work Text:
Today was the day. After finally working up the courage to talk to Mr.Stark and asking if he knew any good surgeons, which led to him spending an entire two days researching surgeons and talking with all of the top ones, you finally had a surgery date. Today.
“It’s fine. I’ll be fine. He’s one of the best surgeons in the world, nothing is gonna go wrong.”
Y/n was pacing around the room double checking he had everything in his bag ready to take to the hospital. It was 10am and you have to be at the hospital by 12pm. Maybe you were slightly panicking but it was kind of scary. You’ve never had this major of a surgery before. Mr.Stark offered to take you to the hospital and wait for you while you were in surgery but you didn’t want him to waste his time waiting for you. If you were being honest you were gonna try and take a cab because you didn’t want to burden anybody on the team. But Bucky and Nat overheard you and Tony talking and adamantly volunteered to go with you for the day and you couldn’t get them to change their mind.
So here you were running around your room like a chicken with its head cut off waiting for one of them to come take you to the hospital. You couldn’t even stress eat which even if you tried probably wouldn’t stay down because of how nervous you were.
“y/n? Hey you doing okay in there? Can me and Bucky come in?” You heard Natasha knocking on your door and froze. After mumbling out permission you see Nat and Buck’s faces as they take in the mess your room has become.
“Alright well we’ll get this cleaned up by the time we come back home post surgery alright? Now it’s almost time to go, are you all set?” Bucky gave you an encouraging look at the end of his sentence. You nodded before throwing on one of Bucky’s old sweatshirts that was loose on you and walking out towards the garage.
Bucky ended up driving while you rested against Nat’s shoulder. She could tell you were nervous so she had her arms around you and would squeeze your hands whenever you started to pick at them.
By the time you guys got to the hospital and got all checked and went into your room you saw Tony standing there talking to the surgeon.
“Hey Tony I thought you weren't gonna come by until after. You shouldn’t waste your time waiting for me.” You were surprised to see him here but it did make you feel better knowing he was here.
“Come on kid, you know I wouldn’t miss it. My boys gonna be a man.” He wipes fake tears off his cheeks. It makes you laugh but it does feel nice. He had recently become sort of a father figure in your life since your biological father didn’t really accept you when you came out.
“I was just talking to the doctor here making sure everything was going to go smoothly. And it seems like you are all set when the time comes. I’ll be waiting out here with thing one and two”, he points to Nat and Buck, “I want to see what you’ll say when you're high off the anesthesia and pain meds.” He can never be completely serious but you take it because you know that's his way of showing love.
You turn and talk to the surgeon while Nat, Bucky, and Tony talk amongst themselves. The doctor goes over what to expect and all the surgery related things and now you just have to wait for surgery time to come.
You and the group had been passing the time talking about different things when the surgical team came in to prep and take you into surgery. They each gave you encouraging looks and you smiled back. It was finally happening. After years of waiting you were finally gonna be getting rid of your biggest dysphoria triggers. The last thing you remember is waving to your friends as you got rolled out of the room.
Beeping. You were slowly waking up and the first thing you noticed was the sound of beeping. Confused, you tried to sit up before your eyes could fully open. Immediately you felt hands pushing you back down onto your bed.
“No no y/n you can't sit up so soon. Come on, lay back down, I'll get you some water.”
You Opened your eyes and then immediately closed them again because wow were those lights bright. Slowly opening them back up this time you saw Nat getting you a cup of water from the sink. You look on the other side of the room and see Bucky, Tony, Steve, Peter, and Wanda cramped and napping on little couches and chairs, which can’t be comfortable for any of them.
“They passed out a little while ago waiting for you to wake up. You have been in and out for a couple hours, said some funny stuff which I’m sure Tony can’t wait to show you later. How are you feeling malysh?”
“Um, still kind of hazy. What time is it?”
Natasha informs you that it is about 7pm and that the doctors say that surgery went perfectly. You still haven’t completely processed the fact that you have a flat chest now. Even looking down and seeing the bandages wrapped around your significantly flatter chest don’t really set it in. But that doesn’t really matter because before you know it you have tears running down your eyes and Nat is coming up on your bed and hugging you as best as she can while being mindful of your fresh chest.
“It’s okay handsome, just let it out. I know I know.” Natasha soothes you back to sleep and if she brings it up later you’ll blame it on the pain meds but she’ll go along with it even though she knows it wasn’t. You go back to sleep with the thought of how much you love your friends, who at this point are basically your family, and can’t be more grateful.
