Bouncing his legs under the table, Nanase looked around one more time just to make sure he hadn’t missed his date on his way in. He was nervous…excitedly nervous, because he was beyond shocked and thrilled and so much more when Yukimiya had asked him out on a date a week prior.
Shocked, because while he had admired Yuki, and though he had never had any negative reactions with him, he had no idea that he had left such an impression on him that he would actually maybe, possibly have the smallest shred of feelings for him!
Thrilled, because well of course…it was Yuki . An amazing soccer player and a model and just an all around nice guy! Nanase didn’t necessarily think Yuki was out of his league or anything, but, even so, when someone has so many options and still picks you, it really is something special!
So he really couldn’t help himself! Practically bouncing out of his seat as he waited, finally jumping to his feet when he saw Yuki enter the cafe, a soft, fond smile on his face as he approached him. Nanase hopped forward, practically tackling him into a hug, before stepping back, apologizing meekly for making Yuki stumble.
“It’s alright…It’s good to see you, too, Nanase.” Yuki unwrapped the scarf from his neck, setting it and his coat over the back of his chair, before pulling Nanase into another, more controlled hug. When he finally pulled away, he gestured for Nanase to sit, and the request was followed without hesitation. “Have you ordered anything yet? What can I get you? A latte? Or do you prefer something less sweet?”
“A hot chocolate would be nice. I don’t really know much about coffee,” Nanase responded with a smile, sticking his hands below his thighs, which served a dual purpose of warming them and preventing him from tapping his fingers on the table.
Yuki’s smile faltered, and he looked at Nanase with a concerned frown, as if worried he had made some sort of mistake. “Why didn’t you say anything when I asked you for coffee? We could’ve done something else for a first date…”
“It’s okay, don’t worry! Cafes always have hot chocolate, and that’s always yummy!” Nanase smiled, cheeks turning pink as he remembered the giddy feeling in his chest from when Yuki first asked him out. “Besides, you said you wanted to talk and get to know each other…so, what better place to do that than over a nice warm drink!”
Yuki shook his head with a smile, comforted by Nanase’s persistently upbeat attitude. He held up a finger, indicating he would be right back, and returned only a few minutes later with their drinks and a slice of something sweet to share. Nanase watched him as he stood at the counter, blatantly admiring his handsome date right up until the moment he returned.
Yuki gently sat Nanase’s cup down in front of him, piled high with whipped cream and topped with chocolate sprinkles. Yuki sat down with a cup of his own, a similar yet different chocolatey aroma wafting out of the large mug. Cocking his head to the side, Nanase observed Yuki’s cup, his lack of knowledge failing him as he truly did not know much about coffee.
“What did you get?” Nanase questioned, accepting the small fork Yuki passed him so that they both could pick at the vanilla sponge cake between them.
“It’s called a caffè mocha…it’s coffee, but sweeter and chocolatey. I thought you might like to try it,” Yuki explained, pushing the cup towards Nanase as an offering.
“I’ll try!” Nanase accepted the cup, picking it up with both hands and immediately taking a much too large of a sip. Nanase grimaced, the much too hot liquid burning his tongue and the back of his throat, highlighting the bitterness of the coffee that still shone through the chocolate. Setting the cup back down carefully, he pushed it across the table to Yuki, shaking his head as he swallowed. “I…don’t think I like that.”
“Are you okay?” Yuki asked, concern apparent in his voice as he reached across the table with a napkin, dabbing away the whipped cream hanging off Nanase’s upper lip.
“Super!” Nanase exclaimed, leaning into Yuki’s hand and the careful way he touched his face. Yuki smiled at him again, the expression of concern never quite leaving his face until Nanase gave him a thumbs up and declared “I just think coffee is not for me!”
“That’s fair…” Yuki stated, pushing the cool cake closer to Nanase so that he would hopefully take a bite and sooth his burning tongue. “You have enough energy for the both of us anyway, I think. Don’t need coffee to add to that.”
Pausing with a bite of cake halfway to his mouth, Nanase dropped his hand, looking at Yuki with a look of concern of his own. He knew that at times, his energy level could be a bit too much for people….but he had really hoped Yuki hadn’t grown tired of him already.
“Is that okay?” Nanase questioned, hoping Yuki would give him an honest answer. “That I have so much energy?”
“I kind of love it, honestly,” Yuki stated, leaning forward to grab Nanase’s free hand over the table. “I like that you’re so happy and positive most of the time. It makes me want to spend more time with you.”
Feeling his cheeks heat with the compliment, Nanase quickly reached across the table as well, grasping Yuki’s hand between both of his own.
“I want to spend more time with you too!” Nanase exclaimed, his energy renewed and the anxious high from earlier returning as Yuki’s eyes gleamed with happiness, just as excited, though only slightly more reserved, that Nanase felt the same way he did.
