Chapter Text
Stone and Wade were on a date. A real, actual, proper date, at the fanciest restaurant Green Hills had to offer. It was weird. Sure, they had been on plenty of dates before, but it was never to a restaurant. Usually they just hung out at Wade’s apartment and watched a movie, or if Wade was feeling especially romantic, they would have a picnic.
Still, Stone wasn’t going to complain about the romantic, candlelit dinner with actually decent food, especially since he wasn’t paying.
He knew he should’ve been happy about it, but something about the situation just rubbed Stone the wrong way. The restaurant was uncomfortably empty. Apart from them, there was a single waitress who had served them, but she had since disappeared in the kitchen.
It was just them. Alone.
Stone was sitting in silence, lost in his thoughts as Wade twittered on about something or other.
“Hey- babe, you alright? You’ve..uh..barely touched your food.” Wade eventually said softly, taking his boyfriend’s hand.
The barista stared blankly over at Wade, biting his tongue. “Yeah..I’m good. Just-..not very hungry.”
“Oh, that’s fine.” The cop smiled, giving Stone’s hand a reassuring squeeze. “You don’t have to eat anymore if you’re full.”
Yes I do. Stone thought to himself. Otherwise I’ll have wasted his money.
“I’m fine.” Stone eventually responded, beginning to shovel his food down.
Whilst essentially forcing himself to keep eating, the barista couldn’t help but wonder why exactly Wade suddenly paid for them to eat at this fancy place, despite the fact that Stone had made it very clear that under no circumstances should Wade ever spend money on him.
There must’ve been a reason. Perhaps Wade needed to tell him something, but what? Stone wracked his brain for an explanation, swallowing down some food he wasn’t even particularly enjoying.
He’s breaking up with me.
Stone paused, staring down at his plate for a moment, before standing up and excusing himself to the bathroom.
The next few minutes were a bit fuzzy, and when he snapped out of it, he found himself staring in the bathroom mirror, the sink nearly overflowing. When had he turned the tap on?
After quickly splashing his face with water, he turned the tap off, staring at his reflection. He couldn’t really deny the fact that he didn’t look great.
Don’t panic. Since he’s breaking up with you, there’s gotta be a reason for him to do so. Which, in turn, meant there was a solution.
Now all he had to do was figure out what exactly the problem was, so he could fix it, and then everything would be fine again.
“Hey, are you alright in here?” Wade asked as he strolled into the bathroom, looking over at Stone with concern.
The barista squeaked, balling up his fists. “Yup! Everything’s peachy, just had to take a phone call.”
“If you’re not having fun, we can get going in a minute..” Wade mumbled, looking utterly defeated.
Stone stared at Wade solemnly, slowly nodding. There was no point in trying to fix this. He had no chance of winning him back. Wade was too good for him anyway.
They headed outside and began walking in silence back to Wade’s apartment. Unfortunately, when they were about half way there, it began pouring with rain, which was especially inconvenient considering neither of them had jackets on. Wade had a hoodie on, but Stone was just in a thin, black shirt.
“Well, crud. You’re gonna get soaked.” Wade looked over at his boyfriend, taking his hand. “Come on. Tom’s place is closer, I’m sure they’ll let us crash there for a few hours until the rain stops.”
As the rain sped up, so did they, and eventually they were essentially sprinting to Tom’s.
By the time they had reached the door, they were both absolutely drenched. Stone was already exhausted. His wet shirt was clinging to his skin in a way that made him cringe, and he felt utterly defeated knowing that by the end of the night, he would be single.
Fortunately, when Maddie answered the door to find the two of them standing there, she graciously dragged them inside and gave them some towels to dry themselves off, at least a little bit.
Luckily for Wade, after pulling his hoodie off, he found that the t-shirt under it wasn’t actually that wet. Stone, on the other hand, felt like a wet dog.
He once again excused himself to the bathroom, once again, just staring emptily at his reflection for an unnecessarily long while. Eventually, he was brought out of his thoughts by a small knock on the door, and upon opening it, he found that it was Sonic.
“Hey, Stone! Wassup? Wade says he thinks you got food poisoning.” The hedgehog raised an eyebrow.
Stone stared down at him, looking rather unamused. “I don’t have food poisoning. I’m just thinking.”
“Thinking about what exactly?” Sonic grinned, gesturing for the barista to follow him downstairs.
With only slight protest, he did as he was told and followed. “It’s nothing interesting. Just relationship stuff.”
The two of them stepped into the living room, Sonic carelessly joining in with whatever conversation they were having. Stone however, was much more focussed on Wade. He looked so remorseful. So regretful. Almost guilty.
With no hesitancy, Stone stormed out of the room, and when Tom called out to him, questioning where he was going, he merely murmured something about cigarettes.
Once outside of the house, Stone sat down on the porch, taking a pack of cigarettes out of his trousers pockets and lighting one. He didn’t even come out here with the intention to smoke, so he wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing. Besides, he hadn’t smoked in months. He had quit because he could tell Wade wanted him to.
To his credit, he was quite good at reading Wade. He could tell exactly what he wanted or needed from the smallest glance or touch.
Stone was so occupied staring at nothing that he had forgotten about the lit cigarette in his fingers. At least, he had forgotten about it until it burnt him, and then he dropped it in pain, stamping on it.
“Are you mad at me?”
The sudden voice made Stone jump, slowly turning to face Wade. He hadn’t even noticed him leaving the house.
“I’m not mad at you.” The barista mumbled, voice steady. “I know what you’re planning. Just-..”
He paused, a sizable lump forming in his throat. For reasons he didn’t quite understand, he felt as though he could’ve cried.
“Get it over with.” He tried his best to sound enthusiastic, not wanting to make Wade feel guilty.
Hesitantly, the cop nodded, taking his boyfriend’s hand and pulling him to his feet.
He was about to speak, when he noticed the tears glimmering in Stone’s eyes.
“Wait-..what’s wrong?” He asked, concernedly cupping Stone’s face in his hands.
Biting his lip, Stone pulled himself out of Wade’s grasp. “I know you’re breaking up with me, alright? So, please, just hurry up and do it so I can forget about you already.”
To his surprise, Wade chuckled. He laughed . Was this funny to him?
“Babe, no- I’m not breaking up with you, silly.” Wade pressed a gentle kiss to his boyfriend’s forehead. “But there is something else I need to ask you.”
Stone watched with wide eyes and bated breath, as Wade cautiously lowered himself onto one knee.
“Um. Right, so- I had kinda planned out this whole speech that I was gonna give you at the restaurant, but uh..” Wade stared up at Stone, shrugging nervously.
“Right. I’m not great with words, I’m gonna be honest, but uh..you’re really cool. You’re smart, fun, super hot, and you’re like, the greatest guy in the world. So, would you marry me?”
Oh! Oh.
Wade wanted to marry him.
He wanted to marry Wade.
Stone found himself unable to put those thoughts into words, however, and instead just burst into tears, frantically nodding.
“Oh- hey, cmon, don’t cry..” Wade smiled, standing up and pulling Stone into an awkward cuddle.
After a few minutes of hysterically crying into his now fiancé’s shoulder, Stone finally felt collected enough to speak, and took a deep breath, pulling away and wiping his eyes.
“Yes, Wade..I’d love to marry you.”
“I TOLD YOU HE’D SAY YES!” Came a shout from inside.
The pair of them glanced in through the still open door, slightly embarrassed to find not only Tom and Maddie watching them, but the three aliens and also the dog.
Tom had offered to drive them to Wade’s apartment later that evening, after some celebration of course that consisted mostly of watching cheesy romance films and drinking Maddie’s expensive white wine that Rachel had bought for her last birthday.
As the two slightly drunk fiancés collapsed onto the bed, Stone couldn’t help but reminisce on the evening.
“Today went awfully. I’m surprised you still wanted to marry me afterwards.” He chuckled, glancing over at Wade.
With a shrug, Wade smiled. “I think it went well. That restaurant wasn’t great anyway, it was probably for the best we left. And, I’m not gonna lie, you looked super cute running through the rain like that.”
Stone had always adored his fiancé’s more positive outlook on life, and hearing that alone was enough to make him feel better.
“Oh! Shoot, I almost forgot.” Wade suddenly sat up, digging through his hoodie’s pockets and pulling out a ring box.
He opened the box, taking out a small silver engagement ring and slipping it on Stone’s finger.
“There we go. Sorry it’s not much, I wanted to get a cooler one but uh-..well, that alone was over a hundred dollars.” Wade chuckled nervously.
He watched intently, his face reddening slightly, as Stone examined the ring with a small smile.
The rest of the night was lovely, really. They drank all of Stone’s fancy champagne that he had been saving for a special occasion, and ended up cuddling in bed, watching men in black.
Unfortunately though, the next day wasn’t so lovely, considering Stone was vomiting for hours after actually getting food poisoning from that damn restaurant.
